TO CLARIFY: We have multiple close friends who've survived Hodgkins, Leukemia, deal with Endometriosis and Lyme (to name a few) and Rizzo has recently worked as a caretaker to someone with Multiple Sclerosis. This is not to excuse any insensitive language but to add context and assurance that we are sensitive and empathetic to those dealing with disability and/or chronic illness. Our humor is at the expense of the overly saccharine and patronizing use of someones trauma and illness. “Fault” is a sensitive and beloved work of art for some, but that doesn’t exclude it from playful criticism. There are many in the community who are not happy with the way Hollywood appropriates and sanitizes *and romanticizes* their pain for entertainment and resent feeling treated as a “fragile other." Our goal is to provide laughter for those who desire to be treated as an equal human being (and not as a victim) and would rather find the humor in the darkness. Life doesn’t end after diagnosis and we all deserve to be valued ☺️ [EDIT: *romanticizes*]

No one gets dark humor like the chronically and terminally ill, trust me!! I myself an chronically (not terminally) ill and have unfortunately lost a bestie to cancer, and when I tell you our jokes were INAPPROPRIATE I am not exaggerating. I remember it driving his mom crazy lol but even she got it. Laughter is the best balm for any pain!

You guys have no idea how much I appreciate this video and these words as a Lymphoma survivor. While doing treatment & having next to no support system, I spent a lot of time watching films depicting "young people dying of cancer", and I would make the same jokes as well. I still can't grasp entirely around my feelings towards this type of media -- on one hand I desperately needed something to grasp on and cry to, but at the same time it is exactly the appropriation and romanization, the capitalizing on pain and the telling of "if you're young and hot you'd fall in love despite unfortunate times" that's extremely laughable (and at times sad). Currently working on a zine called Tumor Humor to understand express these feelings, haha! Thank you for being sensitive and vulnerable always.

I dont think that this movie romanticises on people with condition's pain.. considering that this movie is a book adaption based from a real life story. The movie even is an inspiration that there is love and life even when going through such difficult situations in life. There is a silver lining. And the movie captured that. I think it's a beautifully done and inspiring film.

Hey, I read the book for english in freshmen year and I thought I'd share a fun fact! The title of the book comes from a Shakespeare quote. "The fault is not in our stars, dear Brutus, but in ourselves" basically it means you can't blame fate for bad things that happen to you because they're your fault. The book's title is meant to challenge that because it's not Hazel or Augustus' fault that they have cancer they were just dealt a bad hand from the start.
@PinkPopcast

Damn! Or maybe the fault was in their (movie) stars since Ansel Elgort has been accused of some shifty (possibly illegal) behavior 👀

The author of the fault in our stars (John Green) was inspired to write the book after working as a student chaplain in a children's hospital, and it is dedicated to his friend Esther Earl, who died of thyroid cancer in 2010, aged 16. However Hazel is not supposed to be Esther, John has made it very clear that their stories are very different. Side note I read this book/watched the movie a year after my mom died of cancer (I was 12 I’m 21 now) and the jokes you made are very similar to the ones I made 😂😂 gotta use humor to cope
@madeleinereads
@madeleinereads 2 жыл бұрын
I remember John Green saying that once his work is done, it belongs to the readers. So, even when people have asked him questions about what happens to Hazel after the book, he doesn't answer the question. He leaves it up to his readers.

The last paragraph of the book is essentially the eulogy voice over at the very end of the movie but instead of asking 'Okay Hazel Grace?' Gus says 'I like my choices. I hope she likes hers.' To which she responds 'I do, Augustus. I do.' I was bawling when I read it and when I watched that scene in the theater too. The line about the PET scan lighting up like a Christmas tree also gets me every time.

John and I met in college, but we were from the same hometown so after we graduated we actually got closer. He was in town for Christmas and we went to see a movie, his knee was hurting so badly I had to go get his car for us and pick him up. I made him go to the doctor to have it looked at, thinking he injured it somehow. It was cancer. Metastatic Osteosarcoma. He started treatment, had most of his leg removed, and spent 9 months in and out of Moffitt. I remember the last really good day we had we sat on the beach and watched a cruise ship go by, he pointed and said “next year you and me, we are taking a cruise!” I found out later he knew from day one he was dying. The cancer was already in his lungs, and no matter how much treatment they did there was no fixing it. He did the treatment anyway, because he would never give up, even if there wasn’t a chance. His first night in hospice he ended up with like 20 visitors at once so we ordered pizza and snuck in beer, we all told stories about college, and told his mom about all the drunk shenanigans he got into. I remember him smiling so much, I forgot for the night why were there. He passed away 9 days later, 9 months after his diagnosis. Sometimes when I think about him, and how young he was when he passed, it breaks my heart all over again, even 13 years later. But sometimes when I think about him, I remember him laying in the hospital bed with a huge grin on his face, or sitting in the beach in the sand planning vacations he knew he wouldn’t take, and he inspires me to change my attitude, even if I can’t change my circumstances. Even when he knew he was dying, he never stopped living, and I think that’s beautiful.

Also “it’s ok grandma just wanted us to come over for thanksgiving”. I was crying because I always tear up at the scene where hazel finds out Gus died and that line made me crack up. Thank you Benji Edited to add: I’ve been to the funky bones sculpture where Augustus and Hazel have their picnic. It’s part of the Newfields museum of modern art in Indianapolis where the author John Green lives. It used to be known as the 100 acres but now it’s known as the Virginia B Fairbanks art and nature park. I highly recommend checking it out if you get the chance. I know it probably sounds weird but it is what it is🤪

In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar Cassius says: "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we are underlings." But the whole thing with Hazel and Gus is that the fault is in their stars.

I sob every time! Also-his personality aside, I think Ansel is an amazing actor. I’ve loved him in everything he’s in: this, BABY DRIVER, and of course most recently, WEST SIDE STORY. But the guy has to stop dying in his films and making me cry!

John Green worked as a chaplain when he was studying to go to seminary. That scene with Hazel and the other kids was drawn from his experiences. There's definitely something about chronic illness that you can understand without experiencing it and/or loving someone through it.

I felt like rewatching/rereading the fault in our stars and that's how I came across your channel. Let me tell you, I haven't even checked your channel yet but I subscribed 3 mins in. You brought the exact energy I needed to watch such a sensitive movie, you gave exactly what needed to be given! The fact that I laughed more than I cried watching this reaction (we literally took a box of tissues to the cinema when this came out) shows how funny you guys are. This was a different vibe, I really like the way it was handled. It's pretty rare for reactors to have me laughing that hard and say what I'm thinking at the same time (barring Dee Shanell - gotta give her, her flowers) like w the constant cigarette in mouth😂 I like that you're not annoying with your humour or seem to feel you have to be offensive and rude to make a good joke/comment. I love the way you support each other with your emotions, you don't talk slow (normal playback speed, also rare) and I love the way memes, mean girls and scream queens were referenced outta nowhere but I see how u got there🤣 Love this channel so far, I can see it becoming a fast favourite. I am here, I am down, leggo

John Green, the author of the book, said that the cigarette represents Gus' control in a way. However, by the end, he cannot buy his cigarettes and that is him losing the control that he had over his life and what happens to him. Obviously, John explains it better than that but that is the gist.

There's so many notes I have but it's accidentally 4am so to sum it up and save you sleep-deprived chaos: - I'm living for the sad intro, genuinely cracked me up - As someone who's always hid emotions from others after being called dramatic a few too many times it's actually really nice to see other people cry, keep serving us those tears Rizzo you're doing great sweetie - I've bawled my eyes out over this stupid story too many times. Read the book after thinking "hey this youtuber I like wrote a book" and bawled, then suddenly decided that my English had become good enough to leave translations behind (this was 100% due to the title of this book being ugly in Dutch lmao) and bawled in English, and then when I thought it was all over this movie came out and guess what - There really is no "amsterdamian eiffel tower". There's lots of things and places to see but no specific landmarks. There's a bench they sit on in this movie though, which actually has a plaque that states that it is the TFIOS bench. Really it's just a basic, shitty bench. But it's there. I also remember hearing that people stole the bench and they replaced it with another one. Not sure if it was a fever dream or a real thing, but having spent lots of time in Amsterdam.. it was probably real.
