Those who have passed away: Olivia Newton-John. Jeff Conway (Kenickie) injured his back during the Grease Lightning routine and became addicted to pain killers. He was an addict for decades and passed in 2011. He was briefly married to Olivia Newton-John’s sister, Rona, in the early 80’s. Annette Cardona (Cha Cha) also passed in 2011, from lung cancer. Dennis Cleveland Stewart (Craterface) died in 1994 from AIDS. Eve Arden (The Principle) died in 1990 from heart disease. Sid Caesar (Coach) died in 2014. Joan Blondell (The older waitress with Frenchie) died in 1979. Edd Byrnes (Vince Fontaine) died in 2020. Dody Goodman (Principal’s Assistant) died in 2008. Several of the teachers, dancers, and band members from the dance have also passed.

@StacyLym .. can’t believe all this.. I mean you forget how long ago it was made, so it makes sense considering how old a lot of the cast were while filming it. ( like obviously not teenagers) but Kenickie .. about him being injured and then being addicted to pain killers after .. so sad 😞

Rob got a good singing voice. Fun to watch due to Rob's love for it. BTW, Frenchie's Breauty School drop out is played by Frankie Avalon who was one half of a 50s power couple Frankie and Annette who starred in the Beach Party movies. He was the teen heartthrob of his day. Most of the old actors in Greece were played by television, film and radio legends of the 40s and 50s. The coach was Sid Cesar, the king of Comedy. Eve Arden was the principal...she was a major radio and TV star. Dodie Goodman played her assistant. Joan Blondell was. huge TV and movie star (she plays the owner of the malt shop). And the guy that plays Vince Fontaine -- the host of the dance off - was another heartthrob.

Rizzo dated Danny before. It's really glossed over and you have to catch it or be paying attention. Took me many times watching this to finally pick up on that. It's at the outdoor school lunch scene (summer nights song). The one pink lady Jan says to Rizzo something like "You seen Zuko yet? Looking pretty good hey Rizz". And Rizzo responds "Neah, that's acient history". Gives insight to their interaction when revealing Sandy to Danny at the school bon fire and after climbing down the rose-covered terrace. The break up obviously (now) not being super amicable, at least for Rizzo.

You were right about the guy who plays Knicky. John Travolta won the role of Danny in the movie because he was really popular at the time from being part of the cast of the TV sitcom, Welcome Back, Kotter. Greased Lightning was originally supposed to be Knicky's song, but they thought John didn't have enough songs, so they gave it to him. Jeff Conaway (Knicky) was also on a hit TV series called Taxi. The girl you thought was the mom from That 70s Show wasn't actually on that show, but she was a part of another sitcom; she played one of the daughters on Empty Nest (a grown up Kristy McNichol was the other daughter). Yes, Olivia Newton John was really Australian. In the original Broadway musical, Sandy was American (though she went to a different school before transferring to Rydell High) and her last name was Dumbrowski, so they changed the character to Australian just for her. She was a major pop star in the 70s as well as through the 80s. Sandra Dee was a young movie star in the 50s known for playing innocent, naive, wholesome characters. So by comparing Sandy to Sandra Dee, Rizzo was making fun of her for being too much of a good girl. Rizzo climbed down the side of the house, because she didn't want the parents downstairs to know she was sneaking out. Sandy wasn't sneaking out, she was coming back inside after her song. You're right, the guy who played Frenchie's guardian angel was a big star; he's Frankie Avalon and he had a few hit songs and he starred in several teen beach movies with former Disney Mouseketeer, Annette Funicello. Personally, I think the guardian angel was all Frenchie's imagination, but you could interpret it that way or you can choose to believe it all really happened. It doesn't change the storyline either way; it still convinces Frenchie to go back to Rydell. When you asked if they were all still alive, I think the actors who played teachers have all passed, same with Vince Fontaine and the head waitress at the diner. I think Frankie Avalon is still alive. Jeff Conaway (Knicky) has passed. Other than him and Olivia, all the Rydell students are still with us (though I'm not sure about Eugene and Patty). I'm also not sure about Cha Cha and crater face. The woman who said, "Haul ass, kid" wasn't just a mechanic, she was the Rydell auto shop teacher. She was played by Alice Ghostly who is probably most famous for playing Esmerelda on the TV series Bewitched. She also played one of the parents of one of the other kids in the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie.

At the time Grease came out in the theaters in 1978, I was 9 years old and being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional household. As a result, I turned towards watching LOTS of TV and went to the movies as a way of providing myself with escape and comfort from my misery. Back then I was going to the movies with my then best friend. We were a couple of fanatics about the movies. We talked, read, ate, drank, and slept the movies. And we went to the movies together once a week, every week for a lot of years from the 1970s-1980s. We saw literally hundreds upon hundreds of movies together over the years. We tried to see every new movie that came out regardless of plot, genre (he loved horror films, I preferred comedy), critics reviews, who was starring in it, etc. So there was no particular reason we went to see Grease. It just happened to be a new movie that was just released. As much as I loved the moviegoing experience in itself regardless of what I saw, as an abused, neglected child, there were a small handful of movies that stood out and managed to hit me in the very right places at the very right time. Grease was one of those movies. Right from my very first viewing, it quickly became one of my all time favorite movies and remains that to this day. In the following years, whenever Grease popped up on tv, I'd drop everything to watch it. Today I own the movie on DVD. So, I say to the entire cast and crew of Grease, from the bottom of the heart of an abused boy, thank you all so very, very much.

Travolta's breakout role was in Carrie(1976) but his FIRST movie role was the horror film The Devil's Rain. Olivia Newton John's dad had 2 degrees from University of Cambridge and her maternal grandfather is a Nobel winner. Both she and John reteamed in the film Two of a Kind which was a stinker. The school nurse actress/writer Fannie Flagg is responsible for the book that led to the movie with Kathy Bates in Fried Green Tomatoes. The principal was in classic films like Mildred Pierce and All About Eve with Bette Davis. Marty(Dinha Manoff) was in Child's Play, the spin off of The Golden Girls called Empty Nest and her mom is Oscar winner Lee Grant(Damien: Omen 2) Frenchy can be seen in the film You Light Up My Life. Rizzo(Stockard Channing) has done tv(The West Wing), film, and Broadway and is a Harvard graduate. Lorenzo Lamas(Tom the football player Sandy dated) is from an acting family and he did multiple tv series including the late night soap Falcon Crest. His daughter was on The Bachelor tv series. The coach Sid Caesar the coach is a 2 time Emmy winner popular in both tv and films like Vegas Vacation, History of the World, Part 1, and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World. Jeff Conway(Kinickie) was injured during the Greased Lightening routine and later became addicted to painkillers in his life. He did work on the tv series Taxi and reality tv. The blonde waitress Vi(Joan Blondell) was a famous Hollywood actress for 50 years and was nominated for an Oscar at one point. The singer(Frankie Avalon) who sang "Beauty School Dropout" had sang and did a lot of "teen" inspired movies in his youth. Vic Fontaine(Edd(changed from Edward) Byrnes) was most famous for the tv series 77 Sunset Strip but he did a host of other film/tv projects over the years. He died on January 8,2020. Eugene(Eddie Deezen) was arrested on burglary and trespass charges. Dennis Cleveland Stewart(Craterface) sadly died of AIDS complications in 1994. The mechanic Alice Ghostley can be seen on the comedy tv series Bewitched. In MAD Magazine, it is so funny since at the end Sandy says: In order to get my man, I have to dress like a sl*t! LOL! Sandra Dee was in films Gidget, Imitation of Life, and A Summer Place plus was married to teen idol Bobby Darrin. There is also a theory that Sandy drowned at the beginning of the film and everything is a dream and the finale is her going to Heaven in the car at the end.

Rob throughout this movie is me when I watch it. This movie is a childhood favorite of mine even though I grew up in the 2000’s. I’d come home from school and watch it on vhs. Though idk why my parents let me watch it when I was little as it’s not a kids movie lol😂. It’s my favorite musical next to The sound of music.

I first saw Grease when I was five and had the album too, but it wasn't until years later that I actually heard how filthy some of the lyrics are. Clearly my parents didn't hear that either (they hadn't actually seen the movie, I watched it with my older cousins)

grease is ICONIC. what really makes me sad tho is that it was announced that they did like each other but john mentioned how it never happened because they were seeing different people at the time. that just makes me think about the phrase “right person, wrong time”. ugh i usually don’t like to ship actors who work together but it was something about them that was different and so obvious, even offscreen. i wish it could have been but some things aren’t meant to be. rest in peace olivia 🤍. thanks for the reaction guys

@@stephanieramirez15 I'm glad you appreciate the sequel and series, Stephanie! Last I heard the series was dropped after the first season... so, unless they find another streaming platform (or regular channel) to pick it up, we might not get anymore of that. But, I agree, the series had a lovely GLEE (2009) flair... in addition to adding more to the lore. I actually worked with the actor who played 'Assistant Principal McGee'. She's brilliant and hilarious. Jackie Hoffman. She also had a scene-stealing bit part in GLASS ONION (2022), which I hope to see Reel-Time react to eventually.

Sooooo many great times watching this with my friends in high school and college! Members of my senior class performed "We Go Together" for our high school talent show. And this was one of the movies played on the bus when our college choir went on tour, so yeah, full on 4-part harmonies to all the songs! Lol!

John Travolta will be 70 in a couple of weeks. Rizzo, Frenchie, Marty, Sonny, Putzie, Doody, Jan - of the T-birds and Pink Ladies are all still alive. Will there be a Grease 2 reaction? Or Saturday Night Fever?

Actually, John Travolta had 6 songs that charted on The Billboard Hot 100 Chart. The duets with Olivia Newton-John and cast on "Summer Nights" (peaked at #5) and his only #1 hit "You're The One That I Want." In 1976, he reached #10 with his hit "Let Her In." Olivia Newton-John was born in England but her family moved to Australia when she was a little girl and when she came over to the US after winning a singing contest in Australia, her first few hits would on both The Hot 100 Chart but on the Hot Country Singles Chart. She was scared to take on this role because she was 30 years old when they filmed it and it was when she auditioned with John,, he put her at ease and that's how their life-long friendship began. They would do another movie together in 1983 "Two Of A Kind." Other interesting fact, the day they filmed Stockard CHanning singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee" where some of the lyrics references Elvis is the day he actually died in real life.

I absolutely adored this movie as a child. We had the VHS and the vinyl record of the soundtrack, and I would watch and listen to it at least twice a week. All of the content went straight over my head, and even as an adult, there are things I'm just now picking up on. This solidified that high schoolers looked so much older than me when I was little.

Not only did they take the role of Danny Zukko from the guy whom played Kinnicky, but they also took the song GREASED LIGHTENING from him too bc that song is lead by Kinnicky in the stage play. They took away his role AND the big song in the role they gave him instead.
