Thank you :) www.patreon.com/cmrr Inspired by the poem of Frédéric Mistral, Nobel Prize of literature, Gounod's opera plunges us into the heart of Provence. Moreover, the opening chorus "Chantez, chantez, Magnanarelles" (00:00) plunges us into the mulberry tree enclosure. But everything in this delicious opera breathes this Provence/French countryside. The love duet of Mireille and Vincent in the middle of the fields is sumptuous (02:02). The pastoral oboe solo signed by Pierre Pierlot (07:19) introduces wonderfully the song of the little shepherd (09:15). The direction of Jesus Etcheverry at the head of the orchestra of Paris is full of life and sweetness. The choirs are magnificent. The diction of the soloists is absolutely perfect. A great success from every point of view. Mireille, daughter of a rich farmer, is in love with Vincent, son of a simple craftsman. But her father has decided to marry her to the cowherd Ourrias. Jealous, he seriously injures Vincent, leaving him for dead. Mireille decides to go on a pilgrimage to Saintes-Maries to obtain his cure but, on her arrival, she dies in Vincent's arms after an exhausting walk in the burning desert of the Crau. A Provençal tragedy of great emotional strength and a magnificent portrait of a woman. Synopsis Act I. Mireille takes place around Arles towards the middle of the nineteenth century and begins on the morning of St John's feast, i.e., midsummer night. In a mulberry grove, young girls are singing as they pick the leaves for the silkworms to feed on. It is a lovely hot day. Taven, a gipsy who lives in caves nearby and is said to be something of a witch, joins them and makes a few pessimistic remarks about their carefree jollity. They laugh at her and Clémence proclaims her hopes of a rich and mighty husband. Mireille, the grove owner's only child, says that for her own part she will marry the man who can love as she wishes, even if he is poor and shy. The other girls tease her, for they know that Mireille has already chosen the basket-weaver, Vincent, and has given him a kiss. Taven takes her defence but Mireille only half-heartedly denies this charge. Alone with her, Taven tells her of her sad forebodings and promises to help her. Vincent goes past and Mireille makes him confess his love. Time is flying by however they must part; as they take leave of each other, they swear to meet in the church of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, should some misfortune befall either of them. The mulberry pickers are heard singing in the distance. Act 2. That same afternoon in front of the Arles amphitheatre. The crowd is dancing and singing a farandole as it waits for the race to begin. Mireille and Vincent come in separately. Everyone greets them joyfully and they sing the song of Magali "who turns into a bird to escape from her lover and ends up loving in her turn". When they have finished the race starts and the farandole is resumed. Taven draws Mireille aside and imparts a secret: she has just met three young men - Ourrias, Alari and Pascoul - arguing among themselves as to which of the three should claim Mireille's hand. Mireille, alone, swears that nobody and nothing can part her from Vincent. Ourrias arrives and forces on her his vainglorious attentions, pointing out what an honour it is for her to have a suitor such as he. Mireille remains politely impervious and leaves him. Ourrias, somewhat piqued, is joined by Ramon, Mireille's father, and Ambroise the weaver, Vincent's father, who is as poor as the other man is wealthy. Ambroise mentions his son's mad love for a rich heiress and Ramon points to his stick as the best way to cure him of such crazy ideas. Ambroise is deeply wounded and Ramon reminds him of a father's prerogatives which used to extend to the power of life and death over his children. "Kill me!" cries Mireille, adding "l am the girl he loves!". Ramon is outraged. His first reaction is to cast his daughter away, but he thinks better of it and orders her to come back home with him. Mireille's tears are powerless, as she appeals to her father's finer feeling and to her dead mother's memory. Ramon turns furiously upon Ambroise and Vincent and the scene ends in confusion. Act 3. It is night. Ourrias and his friends are crossing the Val d'Enfer, peopled by fanciful spirits, elves and goblins. He wants to buy a magic potion from Taven, and his friends are laughing at him. They part and Ourrias remains alone, a prey to rage and jealousy. He is lying in wait for Vincent who soon appears. Ourrias first rails at him, then insults him. The young weaver vainly tries to calm him down; Ourrias strikes him with his iron trident and, thinking him dead, rushes off. Taven hears Vincent's cry as he is struck; she catches sight of the fleeing Ourrias and curses him as she bends over Mireille's unconscious lover. Ourrias, full of remorse, has run like a madman to the banks of the Rhône. Once there, he pulls himself together as he sees that he is alone and that all is quiet. He calls the ferryman; an echo answers him, moans rend the air and ghosts glide singing above the water. The ferryman arrives at last and Ourrias impatiently climbs aboard. They set off, but very soon, the waters swell alarmingly and, as the ferryman reminds Ourrias of his crime, the boat sinks beneath the waves. Act 4. Very late that same night. At Ramon's farm, the harvesters are celebrating St John's feast, but Ramon remains sad and gloomy. He knows that, besides breaking Mireille's heart, his refusal has destroyed for ever his dream of a happy old age. From her bedroom window, Mireille can be heard humming Magali's song. A little shepherd walks past and she envies his carefree life. Vincenette, Vincent's sister, slips up, unseen, to Mireille's room and tells her that Vincent is wounded. Mireille decides to set off at once for Saintes-Maries-de-laMer, in order to ward off danger and disaster. Scene Two. The Crau desert, already fiercely burnt by the sun, though it is early. Mireille, who has been walking since dawn, staggers in and steels herself for the worst part of her journey. She remembers Maguelonne, the heroine of an old legend, "who, for a long time, looked for her friend, Pierre de Provence, in the woods". Her head swimming, dazzled by the sun, she faints as the shepherd's pipes are heard in the distance. In a last effort, Mireille drags herself up and resumes her pilgrimage. Act 5. In front of the upper chapel at Saintes Maries-de-la-Mer. It is now midday and the pilgrims are singing a hymn in God's honour. Vincent is there too, looking for Mireille, and he calls down heaven's protection on her. She appears, exhausted, and collapses into his arms. Soon, her father hurries in with Vincenette and forgives her, but he is too late. Mireille dies, called up to God by a heavenly voice. Synopsis. Acte 1 L'histoire de Mireille se passe en pays d'Arles au milieu du XIXe siècle et commence le matin de la Saint-Jean. Dans l'enclos des mûriers, les magnanarelles cueillent en chantant les feuilles destinées aux vers à soie. La journée est belle, il fait chaud. Taven, une gitane qui vit dans les rochers et qu'on dit un peu sorcière, passe au milieu d'elles, évoquant leur insouciance avec une sorte de fatalisme. On se moque de ses radotages et Clémence se détache du groupe en chantant bien haut qu'elle aspire à un riche mariage. Mireille (la fille unique du propriétaire), qui vient d'entrer en scène, déclare quant à elle que, fût-il pauvre et timide, elle épouserait celui qui saurait l'aimer. Les ouvrières s'amusent à la taquiner car elles savent bien que Mireille a déjà fait son choix : c'est Vincent, un vannier, à qui elle a même donné un baiser. Taven proteste et prend sa défense, mais Mireille ne dément qu'à moitié. Restée seule avec elle, Taven lui fait part de ses pressentiments et promet son aide. Mais voici justement Vincent. Mireille va lui faire avouer qu'il l'aime et qu'à côté d'elle Vincenette, sa soeur, n'est qu'une humble fleur des prés, un grillon, une amie. Mais le temps passe, il faut se séparer : ils se disent adieu et promettent de se retrouver dans l'église des SaintesMaries-de-la-Mer si un malheur arrivait. On entend le refrain des magnanarelles qui se perd au loin. Acte 2 L'après-midi du même jour, devant les arènes d'Arles. On chante la farandole en dansant. Mireille apparaît et bientôt Vincent. On leur fait fête et ils répondent en chantant tour à tour l'histoire de Magali «qui pour fuir son amant se fait oiseau qui vole et finit par aimer à son tour». A peine ont-ils fini qu'on donne le signal du départ aux coureurs tandis que la farandole continue de plus belle. Taven prend alors Mireille à part et lui chante une chanson ironique qui bientôt tourne à la confidence : elle a vu trois hommes - Ourrias, le dompteur de taureaux, Alari le berger et Pascal le gardeur de cavales, se disputer entre eux la main de Mireille. Puis la chanson reprend comme si de rien n'était. Restée seule, Mireille se redit à même que rien ne pourra faire changer sa décision. Ourrias, qui passait par là, la retient avec des compliments pleins de fatuité et tente de lui faire comprendre tout l'honneur qu'il lui fait en se courbant devant elle. En vain. Mireille écarte tout cela poliment et s'échappe en lui donnant un conseil : (Croyez-moi, pour qu'on vous aime ne dites jamais "Je veux Ourrias un peu ébranlé s'en va de son côté, laissant la place à Ramon et à Ambroise, le père de Vincent, aussi pauvre que le fermier est riche. Ambroise parle de son fils et de ses folles amours. Ramon répond tranquillement, en désignant son bâton, qu'il y a un remède à cela. Ambroise réagit violemment mais l'autre lui rappelle les prérogatives du père de famille, capable de la plus grande bonté mais aussi de l'autorité la plus absolue sur tous les membres de la famille et qui jadis pouvait même exercer le droit de vie et de mort. « Tuez-moi ! » s'écrie Mireille qui se déclare aussitôt, montrant Vincent : « Je suis celle qu'il aime». Ramon est consterné; dans un premier mouvement, il veut la chasser puis, sitôt prononcé l'anathème, lui ordonne de rester. Les pleurs de Mireille en appelant aux sentiments profonds de son père et au souvenir de sa mère n'y font rien; troublé, Ramon se tourne alors contre Ambroise et Vincent et la scène s'achève dans la confusion générale. Acte 3 1er tableau. C'est le soir ; Ourrias et ses amis traversent le Val d'Enfer qui, malgré son nom, est seulement habité par des esprits capricieux, les farfadets et les lutins. Il veut acheter un breuvage magique à Taven; ses compagnons se moquent de lui ,' ils se séparent, laissant Ourrias tout à sa rage et à sa jalousie. Vincent paraît; il le raille d'abord, puis l'insulte. Le jeune homme tente de le calmer, en vain; Ourrias le frappe avec son trident et le laisse pour mort. Taven entend un cri, aperçoit Ourrias qui fuit et le maudit en recueillant Vincent évanoui. 2e tableau. Ourrias, en proie au remords, a couru comme un fou jusqu'au Rhône. Arrivé là il se calme, constate qu'il est seul et que tout est tranquille. Il appelle le passeur, l'écho semble lui répondre, des voix gémissent puis il croit voir, à la surface des flots, des spectres qui passent en chantant. Ce sont des femmes qui se sont tuées par amour. Le passeur vient enfin. « Tu t'es bien fait attendre, lance Ourrias, et maintenant, au large ! L'eau se gonfle, la barque s'arrête et s'abîme dans les flots tandis que le passeur rappelle son geste criminel. Il est damné. Acte 4 1er tableau. Très tard le soir. A la ferme, les moissonneurs fêtent la Saint-Jean autour du feu mais Maître Ramon est sombre; il sait que son refus n'a pas seulement brisé le coeur de Mireille, il a mis fin du même coup à la vieillesse heureuse à laquelle il se préparait; au loin on entend Mireille fredonner la chanson de Magali, un berger passe et elle envie son insouciance. Vincenette se glisse jusqu'à la chambre de la jeune fille, elle lui apprend que Vincent est blessé mais vivant. Mireille décide d'aller prier aux Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer pour conjurer le malheur. 2e tableau. Dans le désert de la Crau, le soleil est déjà haut; Mireille, qui marche depuis l'aube, rassemble ses forces pour la partie la plus pénible du chemin; elle évoque Maguelonne, l'héroïne d'un ancien roman de chevalerie «qui chercha si longtemps, éplorée, dans les bois, son ami Pierre de Provence». Prise de vertige, éblouie par le soleil, elle croit apercevoir Jérusalem et le Saint-Sépulcre. N'est-ce pas déjà l'église des Saintes? Elle s'évanouit, au loin on entend la musette du berger. Dans un ultime effort, Mireille se relève, reprend sa marche et disparaît. Acte 5 Dans la chapelle haute des Saintes-Maries. Il est midi, les pèlerins chantent un hymne d'action de grâces. Vincent paraît, cherche Mireille et, ne la voyant pas, implore le ciel de l'avoir protégée. Elle arrive enfin, exténuée, et se jette dans les bras de Vincent, puis s'évanouit à nouveau. Le chœur en coulisse chante l'hymne « Lauda Sion Salvatorem». Mireille illuminée semble renaître à la vie; son père accourt avec Vincenette, veut pardonner, mais il est trop tard : Mireille est déjà morte pour le monde, une voix céleste l'appelle et la conclusion est laissée aux voix du chœur.
