Yeah… no wonder you feel like a new life is open for you. It happened to me when I saw the opera at the Berlin Staatsoper in 2004 or 2005 conducted by Julien Salemkour. I was familiar with the opera years before (this same Keilberth recording) but boy what an impression it left on me. I was in complete shock upon leaving the theatre, I perfectly understood the sensation it caused when premiered.

This was a famous issue for its scene painting and authentic atmosphere. As usual Keilberth provides smoothly even and indefatigable Germanic working but at a lower voltage than some later figures of more manic disposition to make listening surprisingly both easier and often more sensible. However the 1821 work’s individuality is undermined and is placed back closer to Beethoven’s and Haydn’s unambitious and more anonymous stage efforts, and Lortzing’s charm and onto the J.Strauss operettas, rather than its real nature as the bridge forward to Wagner’s killer drive and quality invention.

I searched youtube just to listen to the third act which, here, I find to be beautifully sung. If I were to nitpick on this opera, I could stretch and say that Nero the watchdog could've been given a solo, however, dogs are not humpback whales.

The complete recording lasts 2 hours and 14 minutes, not 1 hour and 54 minutes, i.e. 20 minutes more. You cut the spoken dialogues (which is not fair at all). And you deleted my comment yesterday. This is not fair at all either. Merry Christmas! Listen to the complete recording on Google (KZbin, Spotify, etc.)!

@classicalmusicreference3 жыл бұрын
