I remember him hitting the first home run of the year for the Twins in 2015 in Baltimore. As a Twins fan, he was one of my favorite players, I always viewed him as a underated fielder, with pop. Even when he was in a slump, I watched him a respected him in any at-bat. Going to a Twins game and hearing the whole stadium go Plooooooouuuuuufe was always awesome. Miss you in the corner.

As a longtime journalist, Bailey my boy, you're onto some absolute gold here. It'll be a bit awkward figuring out how to vibe with your guest in this kind of format, being that you're essentially nitpicking at the advanced metrics of someone's career and how well they performed, while also trying to keep things relaxed and casual, but that'll happen naturally. I cant wait for the next episode of this series. Keep it up.

Stathead lists 2,898 seasons of at least 24 homers, and only 7 of those have lower RBI totals than Plouffe's 55 in 2012. Next interview is for the rest of his team to determine why they absolutely refused to get on base ahead of him.

Bailey, I have a request: My dad has known and been friends with Tim Salmon since they were in high school. Understandably, he was my favorite player until he retired, and the reason the Angels will forever be my favorite AL team. Is there any way you could do something similar like this about him? I know he was a great player, but I would love to hear your insight, and dig deeper with Baseball Reference. I could probably reach out to him too and see if he would even like to be on your show, doing this exact thing with him. Let me know your thoughts! Thanks,

I have a few questions about the discussion at about 19:30. 1) Why does loving closer to the foul line increase WAR(or as you mentioned an outfielder moving back)? You mention that it limits extra base hits. What about WAR favors players that are good at preventing extra base hits? 2) Listen to what Trevor says at about 19:45. He says that "idk if front offices are going to tell you to do that" and that players should "play that game" to do all they can to increase their WAR. Obviously it is in the players incentive to increase their WAR, but isn't it still in the teams incentive as well. Why would a team not want a player increasing their WAR, if it only makes them more valuable. Trevor suggests this(very slightly) that increasing individual WAR may not always be best for the team. Is that true and in what cases would that be true? Just curious on the interpretation of that.
@FoolishBailey2 жыл бұрын
My interpretation of both 1) Moving closer to the foul line (at least in Trevor's case) resulted in an increase in his overall defensive metrics. His WAR increased because the defensive component of WAR (in this case, Defensive Runs Saved) increased. 2) WAR and team wins aren't always 1:1 correlated. I think Trev felt that taking a step closer to the line artificially increased his WAR. He appeased the defensive metrics, but didn't necessarily become a more effective defender. And if WAR becomes a standard for salary arbitration, then players who use defensive positioning to increase their WAR would have money to gain, and the front offices money to lose.
@Zack-wq2hl2 жыл бұрын
@@FoolishBailey, thanks for the very interesting and detailed response. I see exactly what you mean, however I feel like the move closer to the line is still a very clearly beneficial change to the help the team win. He did artificially increase his WAR just like you stated(which is a weird way of becoming "better"). However, when Trevor made this change, he did become better at run prevention(at least by metrics used in WAR). He became a more effective fielder, and is therefore more valuable to the team. So is a team's main goal is to win games(and prevent runs), he probably helped the team. Though you bring up an interesting point with money to gain in salary arbitration. Trevor's(or any player in this situation) small positioning change probably led to more money in his pocket, and more for the team to spend on him. And Trevor's point on if a team would tell players this is interesting. In the paragraph above, I said a team whose main goal is to win would welcome that change. But would a team who is tanking not advertise this change only to save money during arbitration. I guess Trevor is somewhat suggesting that teams may do that. He also brought up a great point on how this can be dangerous if MLB implements WAR directly into player's salaries. The real question would then be, would a tanking team actively prevent a player from increasing his WAR in order to save money? That seems unlikely(but in theory, possible) and borderline unethical to me.

It’s kinda weird to see how we judge like player age. Like when Trevor said the first time he faced Scherzer was in the minors it felt weird for me, even though I know they’re about the same age. The difference is like my brain considers Trevor Plouffe to be a young baseball media guy, and Max Scherzer to be an old baseball player guy, if that makes sense.

If the Twins were not into analytics it is not surprising that Trevor did not focus on getting on base because batting in the middle of the lineup traditionally means you need to knock in runs. Had come up with an analytical system in the minors he likely would have had a different outlook on his approach. Great career nonetheless. I wonder if he ever played on any teams with the guy from Antonelli Baseball? I like that channel too.
