On this World Wide Wed episode, best friends Sonya and Harsh come from two different regions of India, so when it came to their wedding, they combined the cultures of Harsh's southern region Andhra Pradesh and Sonya's northern Punjabi background. The resulting 72-hour celebration is the stuff of Bollywood dreams, starting with the Sangeet, a festive banquet-turned-talent show, and ending in an intimate, ornate ceremony. Watch as the bride and groom honor traditions (hint: there's no final kiss) with some modern flair.
ABOUT SERIES
Ever wonder why we get married the way we do? We decided to attend the weddings of 5 very different couples to understand culture and traditions around the globe. Stay tuned every Saturday at 11am for our new series World Wide Wed.

@vegan chick I think you don't have much information well , if you search vegetarian countries India is I think on the number one ! Shahi paneer , dal makhani , masala dosa , ladoo the list goes on forever ( vegetarian foods ) are not as popular in the west as the chicken dishes and that's not our fault . Pure vegetarians (traditionally )in India don't eat onions and garlic including all the meats , eggs and milk so you just don't know and did not try to know . I am myself a vegetarian but calling other people's food "poop" and bashing them for their food choices is not right ( though I hate non vegetarian diet but still ) .

Indian culture has become stale and stinking. These traditions are so deep rooted that Indians are unable to break out of larger issues such as caste system, inter religion weddings. Culture should be adaptive not restrict a person to live the life they want. This is all just shock and awe for the foreigners and they don't even live in India, they are doing it all living in the USA. So HUGE difference. If this wedding was done in India, imagine the number of naysayers and people shaking their heads in disbelief as to how a Punjabi girl chose to marry a Telugu guy, it would be an abomination.

@@elva136 Well I'm from a conservative Rajput family living in a small town in North India, my sister got married to a punjabi guy with the blessings of our family, there were some relatives who were against it but later on they all agreed, it was the best wedding 😇 So I don't know if you're Indian or not but still you have no rights to call a culture stale and stinking, it is the people who have such mentality not the culture.

Apparently as a child, before I even understood race, I was obsessed with Indian women. Mom tells me that as a toddler, we lived in an area with a very high population of Indian and travelor people. And the Indian women often dressed in traditional garb. I would get so excited to see them and wander off from my mom and tell them how beautiful they were and how beautiful their clothes were and I'd ask if I could touch their hair and clothes because it was so new and exciting. They almost always said yes. And even though I don't remember my life as a two year old, those experiences stuck with me. They really shaped a lot of my experiences as I grew up. I dressed up as an Indian princess from one of my favorite books for a book report. I got a diversity scholarship to college. I've felt so much kindness from these immigrants and daughters of immigrants. The only thing I remember is the way that some of the women's dresses felt and jingled in my hands and that they touched my hair and smiled at me. I felt very loved and respected. I've been fortunate to meet a lot of amazing people who have somehow maintained the impossible balance between assimilation and maintaining their culture heritage. Thank you to all of those anonymous women that nurtured me before I could even understand. I also am grateful to all of the black ladies and old ladies who felt comfortable to touch my hair (with permission) and tell me I was beautiful despite me not having traditional white textured hair. It made me feel special and formed a huge part of my identity. Just... Thank you. I wish I knew who you were so I could tell you how much it meant to me

Well please understand that those videos are meant for people to explore other cultures. Punjabi and Telugu means nothing to foreigners, so North and South is way more useful in this context. If it was a video about german weddings and they said it was a mix of Friesisch and Bayrisch traditions, you wouldn't understand, too. But Northern and Southern Germany would explain it better for you.

I have a boyfriend and we both are OKAY with having just 30 people in our "wedding". I don't know how I got this maturity but I guess I have seen enough examples of unhappy couples that I was able to look past the BULLSHIT of these 3 day ceremonies and pomp and show that at the end of the day, it's the person who you choose to share your life with is what matters and not all these extravagant materialistic things. Persians, Egyptians, Parsi, Greece, Rome and every other culture was destroyed and converted but Sanatan (Hinduism) and Dharmic cultures and religions of India fought and are the only ancient culture still alive and blossoming. Many invaders came looted and plundered the most rich region Bharat/India (which had 25% of worlds gdp back then) may it be Christian or barbaric Islam, left us with only 2.5% of worlds gdp after 1000 years of loot. Anyways, India/Bharat kicked them out. Bharat will rise again, and will unfurl its golden wings as it used to, historically. Long live Bharat and her immortal culture.

Do you know that India is a country where every relationship is considered very important. India is considered to be a good society of festivals, culture, love and happiness.Indian people play their relationships very importantly.India is considered as a festival of festivals such as Holi, Diwali, Durga Pooja etc ..... The people of other countries are adopting Indian culture. Not only this, people of other countries are marrying the Indian people and happily living their lives. India is a great gift for this. Sh. The biggest thing is that there is no divorce in India.

whats more interesting is the main wedding ceremony has been mostly unchanged since about 3000 years ago. its almost like timemachine to the past. even the mantras during the wedding were uttered in the same way as they did 3000 years ago. In a language that modern Indians don't understand - sanskrit. to look for the ancient markers are use of fire (fire is eternal witness to the wedding), grains, gifts, vermilion powder on the woman's forehead and a chain around her neck. Use of the colour red that denotes fertility. green that denotes prosperity. in ancient times the bride used to get grains or seeds to plant in the husbands fields to enrich the food of the adopted family, or to bring her taste and tradition into the new family - she would also bring her chosen god to add to the family pantheon. of course, the horse. Ancient Indians revered the horse - but that's a course in the Aryan society. not the Hitler kinds but Iranian and indian Aryans. Clearly this wasn't a traditional wedding ceremony, this is with modern twists and a mix of south indian and north indian wedding. The jewellery wouldn't have been as ornate neither the dress, i mean 3000 years ago the level of craftsmanship might be underdeveloped. But then Indians have been decorating them selves with jewellery and textile since ancient times. I mean according to the roman pliny the elder, Rome's coffers ran dry because the royalty and women of Rome couldn't get enough of indian textiles. hope that gives you some more information on the ceremony. Bollywood didn't exist so i guess dance is a modern inclusion. ha ha

@@julianabohley4957 I know bro, I'm pretty chilled. Thank you and please know that I was not criticising you. I just wrote what came to my mind in that instant, your observations are true, they are pretty rich. That statement I wrote is kinda like universal truth. Media influences people knowingly or unknowingly to develop positive or negative biases against different sections of people. We must observe things at deeper level than what media portrays.

match box1 what kinda drugs are you on because they sound fun. you know, being able to make statements and call them “universal truths”, you must think very highly of yourself and your opinions. i am aware that media creates bias, however, there is no bias in my initial comment. i was simply stating that i think these people have very conventionally attractive faces, and that i want an indoor pool. honestly, you’re the one who took this too far and maybe you should grow a thicker skin and not care so much about what you think is “media portrayals creating negative bias”. k thx bye.
@matchbox1275
@matchbox1275 4 жыл бұрын
@@julianabohley4957 Unrelated interpretations of my statements and claiming them as something said by me. I had said nothing against the family or you. And I clarified that pretty clear. May be, read the comment completely before taking things too far? Honestly, at least you should take yourself seriously, let alone other people thinking high of themselves or not! May be, you should not be careless about things like media bias and start to understand what are the "real things" that affect people, positively or negatively. Thick or thin skin has nothing to do with what we are talking here. Facepalm! Ur wlcme, byee.
