Refinishing an Old Thompson Center Hawken Stock

I decided to refinish the old stock to my Thompson Center Hawken project. I strip the varnish and remove the stain and show how to apply the new finish.

Thompson Center was the Top of the Line Kit back in the day! CAV was the cheap kit back then and more work to make it look good!

A couple of things, all TC stocks are Black walnut , you should have used a stock sealer prior to the Tru-oil to fil the pores on your stock for an even overall finish. You can seal the pores with Tru-oil if you put it on with a piece of maroon scotch bright pad and let the very fine sawdust mix with the Tru-oil and fill the pores. You could steam all the dents out with a damp wash cloths and a steam iron.

Turned out great, that combo of the strip and Tru-Oil really makes that walnut look good.

Most of the better guns have walnut stocks. Original Hawken rifles use a lot of maple. The curly maple stocks are beautiful. "Quadruple Zero" steel wool is most commonly referred to as "Four Aught"

I use the spray foaming version of this citrus stripper. Once the varnish softens up i scrape it off with an old credit card. I let it dry overnight and then repeat the process. Instead of scrapping I blast it off with a garden hose. I then complete the refinishing.

To remove the old stain I brushed about six coats of bleach on with an old brush rinsing between each coat with water.

If it was from a kit, there will be a "K" stamped inside the lock inlet or inside the barrel channel.

Respectfully, I do not believe that the stock was part of a "kit". The stock features and cuts/inlays are much better than that from a kit. I have seen numerous kit guns and never seen a stock that good from a kit. It would appear to me that someone tried to "refinish" the "factory" stock and did a poor job of it. I've owned a TC Hawken since 1977 and "back in the day" knew a bunch of people with "factory" Hawkens and kits as well. kindest regards.

You could be right, I haven't seen a TC kit in person, so I wouldn't know. But somebody trying to refinish the factory stock would make a lot of sense.
