Welcome to my Austin Mini Mayfair 998cc Automatic restoration. This project car was bought from e-bay in July 2020 for the sum of £4000. My intentions are to carry out a light restoration and make the car the best it can be while keeping it almost completely original. The end result will be a time warp back to 1984 and the car will look like it has just left the showroom.
This Mini Mayfair is rare in that it has only covered 12,000 miles since new, only 330 miles per year! The shell is almost completely rust-free and has never been welded or had any panels replaced.
In this update, I refit the automatic engine and gearbox

The close up inserts are fantastic. Reminds me of putting the engine and transmission into my mgbgt. Beautiful painted engine bay. I borrowed an engine hoist, just lowering it into place and the hoist dropped unexpectedly. The engine scratched the newly painted slam panel. Fortunately it didn't dent it but everytime I look at the slam panel I relive the moment.

I was so lucky with the hoist, no damage at all.

Hey.. Paul Robinson.. I know that guy.. He's a good guy.. Having been out of the mini scene for a bit, your videos are seriously the best out there. I do gain a good bit of knowledge in every one. I love the tip (you showed) on placing foam mats between engine and body panels..wonderfully simple.

We all talk about dropping the engine back in , but honestly Keith you’ve taken it to a whole new level thankfully no body parts were in the way and the foam pads will have protected that lovely paint job. I’m liking the additional insert footage it gives us an idea of what your actually doing. Is the wok engine mount not available with captive nuts then, I bought a pair for my manual mini then forgot I’d bought them and then bought another pair non captive and used them instead finding the original set once the engine was in, I said one or two bad words. Take Care Stay Safe Everyone Regards Dave 👍😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Cheers Dave, I will definitely be welding captive nuts on the back if I ever have to do it again. I don't think they do the mount with captive nuts for an auto

4:00 God i f****d up tonight lol..................that Wok engine mount has at least another 20years/35000 miles left in it lol. The radiator one needs changing immediately lol. Well done Keith for remembering the "1st" donut award pmsl. Best part about today is that when i got up this morning, both my personal and work phone had a "track and trace" isolate for 6 days warning shown. Guess where i have been today....................yep you guessed it, down at "Lassiters Mini Man Cave" OMG. I was chatting to Randy at Lone Star Mini the other day for a name for my channel and, well, there you go................. Anyway, thanks for the mention my friend, great to here i'm the 1st to come lol

I cheat and use engine mounts with captive thread inserts and bolt in from the wheel side of the subframe. But that was some catch when the engine dropped mate! Looking great,

Hello, if you weld 2 nuts on inside of the engine mount, it gets a lot easier to put the bolts through the fender side, it has to be done before you install the mount to the converter cover, it also makes it a lot easier for removal

Hi Keith, love your work and always look forward to your updates. Correct me if I am wrong and missed it, but I would have have replaced the rear engine main seal while the motor was out. I am an old fart ( 70 years old ) mechanic and have owned four mini's in my youth and the rear main seal oil leak was a real pain in the ass. My first mini was a 1960 Morris minor 850cc super car, well I thought it was. Rear main seal oil leak was the most annoying repair I had, until they brought out the Dever conversion kit if I got the name correct. It did away with the crankshaft nose oil seal which was in the flywheel by blocking the oil feed with a bronze pin and replacing the output drive gear which was a new design with bronze bearings that were lubed as per the crankshaft bearings. My apology's if I missed it in your superb KZbins. Jim

@classicminiworkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, I took some advice not to touch the torque converter unless absolutely necessary so I've taken a bit of a gamble on the rear main. The back of the toque converter was rusty, no signs of a leak at all so I decided not to touch it. If it was a manual, I would have done it without a second thought.

OMG - somehow I did this many years ago (1987 maybe?) with an Allegro gearbox swap (idler gear failure) - even with the manual A-series it’s a heavy lump! I don’t think we even had a proper engine hoist - the details are lost to the mists of time (and beer)! It was a weekend “flip car” but I do remember that the newly refurbished series 1 Allegro (with quartic steering wheel too) went on to a long life afterwards.
