Refresh EZ Print Subscription, Smart Ink & Toner Service from Brother

True or false, does my new brother printer automatically disable the toner cartridges prior to them physically running out of toner? This whole subscription model is making me uneasy. My old brother printer was cost-effective for over a decade because I could easily use 3rd party cartridges. I hope my new Brother HL-L3280CDW can use 3rd party cartridges but please let me know if not?
