I have a 17 year old mini fridge that recently stopped cooling. Upon plugging it in, the compressor would hum for a few seconds and then the overload would click and trip open. Checked the protector, very low ohms. Checked the start relay, completely open. No rattles, but when I took off the cover the disc and contacts looked pretty bad. Wanting to make sure a new start relay was the right fix, I made a jumper for the start relay pins, and then plugged in the fridge just for 1-2 seconds and unplugged it, and the compressor started up and sounded normal. After watching your video and the troubleshooting I feel confident enough to order a new start relay. Thank you for sharing.

Today I changed burnt PTC Thermistor in my Samsung fridge. Your instructions mentioned to check the resistance between starter and running inputs (bottom two out of total three)of PTC. It should not be open. Guess what! Mine was open. Along with other tests I decided to chagned PTC for $15.00 from Grainger. It worked. Thank you very much for a very good explanation.

Recently had a Frigidaire mini-fridge that wasn't cooling. Compressor was hot and when the thermal overload reset, it was pilling 9 amps with an LRA of 11. I checked the PTC and it was reading about 50 ohms. I disassembled it and found signs of carbon/overheating on the run terminal/PTC contact surfaces. I scraped both surfaces down and got a reading of 9 ohms. I reinstalled it and the fridge started up with 1.3 amps while running. It continued working while I awaited arrival of the $10 replacement. It's running fine. Thanks for the great video which I found after I had repaired the fridge.

So my Hisense Fridge has a NB1116HY Compressor, and it's pulling 10.5 amps after in rush current, then shuts off after 30 seconds. My guess is the PTC went bad, and the other Klixon is shutting it off after 30 seconds. I checked the compressor Ohm readings and it looked ok. 10uf cap is at 10.2 so that's fine. I've considered getting one of the cheap Megers to check compressors further, but it seems like I won't need it for this.

Seems 88/108 is fairly common with vintage refrigerators and freezers. I'm troubleshooting a 42+ year old Sears 106.6327150 upright freezer that went out for the first time last summer, and it has the same spec for the capacitor in it. I have yet to remove it from the plastic housing it's mounted in to see if it's leaked at all, but one afternoon this coming week I'll be going through it part by part in hopes that what made it go out was a still-available component. Lost 100+ lbs of salmon and beef when it went out last summer. Hooooo that stung the nostrils....

I'm starting to thing my compressor may be mechanically stuck as I have replaced the relay/protector circuit, the run capacitor tested fine and all electrical readings on the compressor are exactly at spec from the datasheet. My condenser fan was making a loud racket, so I inspected and cleaned under the fridge from the front only, which stopped the noise, apparently by stopping the fan, because an hour or so later I noticed a puddle from the ice dispenser. The compressor was extremely warm. When I tested the protection circuit I got and am still getting .1 ohm, then 0, with 3 different meters and 2 sets of probes, so for $36 I replaced, but compressor still won't start(tested the new one also, reading didn't fluctuate). So, any ways to unstuck a compressor? I'm thinking about trying a heat gun, but this is not my area of expertise.

I have a relay model P6R8MD OR0702. On this one, there is no rattle at all, and when I check ohms, it's like 20-25, not 4.7 or 0 etc. When I check continuity, there is no beep, no continuity. On the refrigerator, the compressor never turns on, but the casing does get warm. The overload works and has continuity in the terminals. I assume the relay is bad, but I don't understand why the high ohms and no rattle. [update] I took the relay apart and the problem is that the disk is cracked but only a small part is chipped off. It didn't rattle because there is some kind of cardboard/plastic sleeve going around the disk, basically holding the shards together. I can't even get continuity directly from both sides of the disk. At least not from every touch point.

So, The compressor is not working. Relay clicks, compressor 'buzzes' for like 15 seconds, the relay clicks, and compressor stops buzzing. We have 120 volts at compressor, and then we put on new capacitor, and relay, but compressor still just buzzes for 15-20 seconds. We tested the 3 pins on the compressor, and they all showed continuity; the ohms readings were around 4.4, 4.3, and 8.9. We Put an amp meter on the power line when compressor is buzzing, and it shows 9.5 amps while compressor is buzzing. (The label on the compressor says 19.5 LRa). Even tapped the compressor with hammer while buzzing, which did not help. Is my compressor broke? Could it be acting like this if it was low on R134a? Is their any tests I missed doing? Thanks, Matt
