Of course you should clean the carbon conductive pads and any metal parts by hand, but I've heard that soapy water will do the trick for everything else. If you plug the sink and then fill it will soapy water, you can drop in the outer cases and all the facebuttons / hard plastic pieces. Supposedly this method will make the controller look like it is in brand new condition.

@@VIRTUALBOY I did have a question regarding how often you should do a deep clean like this? the phillips screws are pretty delicate and i dont want to take it apart more than i need to. once every 5 years or so maybe?
@VIRTUALBOY4 жыл бұрын
How often you should clean is really dependent on you and your habits. If you practice good hand hygiene and always make sure your hands are washed and clean free from dirt / food, then you really don't need to clean it unless you are having issues. It would be a good idea to clean it every few years or so because regardless of how clean your hands are, dead skin / oils / dust / hair will eventually find its way in. Hey, thanks so much for the video! I just cleaned my gamecube controller, but I'm still stuck with the same problem: my c-stick controller is stuck, so the camera keeps spinning and spinning even in neutral position; and yes, I made sure to leave the c-stick alone during the bootup of the game. Any idea what could be wrong?
@VIRTUALBOY6 жыл бұрын
It could be a number of things, possibly even a faulty c-stick module. Try popping the c-stick cap off and spraying some compressed air into the module while moving the c-stick around. After that you could try adding a VERY TINY amount of silicone lubricant while moving the c-stick around. If that does not help, you may want to cut your losses and purchase a new GameCube controller. You can always swap the shell / triggers / buttons and just use the brand new board with the new control / c-stick modules. Hope this helps, good luck!

Honestly, I do not know how the joystick caps that I linked compare to official OEM GameCube parts. In addition, I am not sure that you can purchase OEM analog caps for GameCube controllers. The replacement caps I used in this video were from a broken controller that I scrapped. Most of the reviews on the linked caps were positive. I am sure there are other replacement options out there (Amazon, Ebay, etc.) so I would recommend doing a little research if you want the best possible replacements. +WECKmaster329 I am surprised that they were so tight to begin with. Sometimes if the screwdriver you are using is just a little too big or small, you can strip them. If they were just strangely tight though, I am not really sure what to tell you. You can try some of these tips from this link. www.wikihow.com/Remove-a-Stuck-Screw If they are so stripped that you cannot get them off without breaking parts, it may be time for a new controller. Good luck!

Hey quick question, you never specifically said how to clean the analog sticks (or maybe you did, I skipped some parts) do you use the same 409 as you did all the other buttons?
@VIRTUALBOY6 жыл бұрын
If you are referring to the plastic caps that attach to the analog mechanism, I would just use 409, and then make sure you rinse and dry them out with compressed air thoroughly before reattaching them. For cleaning the actual mechanical analog sticks that are soldered to the board, I would start with dusting them out with compressed air while rotating the stick around. If they are really dirty or sticky, I would use 91% isopropyl alcohol and a Q-tip along with compressed air to flush debris out. Soak the Q-tip with the alcohol and then let it soak into the mechanical stick and rotate the stick around (do not use too much alcohol at one time), then blow it with compressed air while rotating the stick around, repeating the process until satisfied. Make sure to let it dry out entirely before reassembly and use.

Okay thank you, that was very helpful.

My controller doesn't have those metal clips should I try to find some or is it not a big deal?
@VIRTUALBOY3 жыл бұрын
It is kind of a preference thing. They can give a bit more stability and more consistent shoulder button presses and help prevent the triggers from hitting weird angles while being pressed and getting stuck. They came on the older T1 / some T2 controllers, and I believe they stopped with T3 controllers. You could probably find some metal rods on ebay if you don't already have some in an extra controller laying around. I cannot say for sure, but you probably wont find any metal rods in any cheap 3rd party controller, so stick with first party if you are looking for some.

How tightly should I tighten them cause the orange one I got had a bit of a gap between the two cover pieces and I don't want to screw it too tight and risk damaging the circuitry

I would tighten them no more than one hand turn after they start to resist you driving them. Also, you may want to re-seat everything. I noticed before that the shell can get wonky if you are not careful. If everything is properly placed back together, and you line the 2 shell halves up correctly, it should go together nicely.

I saw another cleaning video where instead of compressed air, they removed the black pieces on the analog box and cleaned it. Is that really necessary or can I use just alcohol and compressed air like this to fix drift? My controller drifts up and sometimes the stick gets stuck.
@VIRTUALBOY3 жыл бұрын
So it really depends on how dirty or worn your stick boxes are. Taking them apart is actually quite easy (at least on the T3 white plastic models). So basically squirting a little isopropyl in there and blowing it out should be sufficient, but another thing to consider is lubrication. Whichever stickbox model you have, using a combo of cleaning with iso & air, then using a very sparing little bit of Molykote 44 Light in key spots and moving the stick around should help make that stick feel nice (unless the stick is completely worn or the potentiometers are worn out). You can get a small amount of Molykote 44 Light pre-packed into a syringe from FIRESCustom on etsy (they also sell replacement parts like potentiometers): www.etsy.com/listing/751775187/stickgrease-joystick-stickbox-lubricant?ref=shop_home_feat_3

ssbm is definitely one of the greatest games ever made. My main concern with my old controllers is that the C-stick isn't responsive like a new controller and also I suspect the springs for the trigger buttons have worn out a little. Do you think if I followed this tutorial, can I get my old gamecube controllers working like brand new again? Also, my C-stick doesn't look like it's damaged so would I need to buy a replacement or will cleaning it on the inside like this make it super fast responsive again? Right now theres a bit of a lag between when I mash the C-stick up for an up attack when playing smash melee for example. And that fraction of a second is so huge for smash melee. I feel like everyone is spending money on buying new melee controllers but if this fixes it all that would really save big and we wouldn't have to worry again when they discontinue selling the melee controllers in the future. Thanks so much for the tutorial man!!!
@VIRTUALBOY9 жыл бұрын
+SiZo SiZo To be honest, it really depends on the mechanical condition of your controller. This tutorial is mainly for controllers that exhibit the usual wear and tear, and will usually get them working nicely. The usual culprit of controller issues is dirt and foreign bodies that find their way into the controller over time. That being said, this tutorial will not fix your controller if it has severe mechanical damage (apart from replacing parts such as analog/c-stick thumb caps, and new springs). If something traumatic happened to your controller and the actual internal joystick assembly is damaged on either the c-stick or analog control stick, you are better off to purchase a new controller. You can usually get a brand new, 1st party Nintendo Game Cube controller on Amazon for a good deal; here is a link to a current listing for $22 with free shipping: www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Super-Smash-Classic-Gamecube-Controller/dp/B00O9GW8TC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1450159969&sr=8-1&keywords=gamecube+controller&refinements=p_89%3ANintendo Let me know if you have any other questions! Merry Christmas, and happy smashing!

+VR32VIRTUALBOY Thanks so much man! I'm planning on doing this soon and if it doesn't work then I'll prob go with buying the new controllers. But this is so much better if it works because a) cheaper and b) it's a long-term solution for whenever they dc controllers again in the future. I think I just have normal wear and tear. The controls looks like new it's just not crisp / there's some lag with c-stick smashes and the springs might need replacing but I'm not sure. Anyway, I'll be following your tutorial soon and let you know how it goes. Merry Christmas and Happy smashing to you too! Long live ssbm xD
@VIRTUALBOY9 жыл бұрын
+SiZo SiZo You are very welcome! I feel like your springs should be ok once you clean and reassemble everything; it would have took quite a bit of use for those to have worn out. It is more than likely just the shoulder buttons themselves that need a little love. Also, you can always add a tiny little bit of silicon lubricant to the shoulder button sides and edges to smooth them out. Be very careful, and use that stuff sparingly though; a little goes a long way! Just spray a little onto a paper towel and wipe it on the shoulder buttons before or after reassembly: www.amazon.com/Liquid-Wrench-M914-Silicone-Lubricant/dp/B000ABE98I

+VR32VIRTUALBOY Good to know! I'll do that if the cleaning doesn't do the trick! Two quick questions. I got one of my gamecube controllers open by taking it to a radio shack today and they used their tools. I want to buy the triwing screwdriver you have linked in the description tho. When I went to the amazon link, all the reviews on it are really pretty bad. Did you buy it from that link yourself and found it to be good? Second question, I opened up the controller and I can't seem to find that U shaped metal paperclip-looking wire at the trigger buttons. Do you think I accidentally lost these somehow (like maybe they flew off when I opened it because of the spring and what not and I just wasn't paying attention - and it's really hard for me to find these tiny things on the floor) or do you think they made any gamecube controllers without these? The one I opened today is the first gamecube controller I ever had, that came with the gamecube. But I believe I bought mine a year or two after GC was already out. Third question then, do I really need those metal wires? heh...
@VIRTUALBOY9 жыл бұрын
+SiZo SiZo To answer your first question about the tri-wing screwdriver, I actually bought mine on ebay a long time ago. I cannot remember the seller, however my screwdriver looks EXACTLY like this one: www.amazon.com/DS-Tri-Wing-Triwing-Screwdriver-Nintendo-6304900/dp/B000VPBYS6/ref=pd_bxgy_63_img_z To answer your second and third questions, the metal clips are actually something that older model controllers have, and some of the newer ones do not. The metal bars are not necessary for function, however they do help the shoulder buttons to be pressed down vertically, preventing jamming/sticking (something that the new controllers exhibit). In addition, the newer models also use a slightly different plastic on the L/R shoulder buttons themselves, increasing jamming/sticking. Considering the perspective of competitive melee, I often hear about people buying the brand new controllers, and simply swapping out the L/R shoulder buttons and adding the metal bars from the older model controllers. This gives you the best of both worlds, because you would have a brand new, crispy controller with the better triggers. I personally bought a brand new controller, and then added older style triggers (using the brand new springs), and it feels amazing! If it is bothering you, you could easily pick up an older controller for parts, or maybe even just the parts alone and put them into your controller. You could also get and older controller, and simply put the entire back half onto the front half of a newer controller.

I would say Amazon is your best deal for an official Gamecube controller. Here are a couple links for you! amzn.to/2iaVo8F amzn.to/2ioYxB6

BRUH HOW DO I CLEAN STAINS OFF THE DAMN CONTROLLER MY THING HAS STAINS ALL OVER THE DAMN COBSYWJWYJWJSHWNENEKSGABAOAM
@VIRTUALBOY3 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on what sort of stains are on your controller. If its something like sun fading (white controllers) you would have to peroxide / retro-bright treat it. Anything else maybe some all purpose cleaner & good old elbow grease / scrubbing. Otherwise, you would be looking at repainting or getting a new shell.

This is actually useless why would I clean the inside of my controller unless I intentionally pour an entire Soda on it

This video is useful for a reference of the disassembly, reassembly, cleaning and basic parts swap of a GameCube controller. Believe it or not, regular use of a controller (especially if you are a competitive Melee player) will result in the buildup of dirt, dead skins cells, and various other debris. I am meticulous about hand washing before using my controllers, and after a few months, I can notice the chassis becoming dirty.
