People saying to buy a new one, when is a quite good feeling of restoring your 10 year old functioning controller to make it even better. Nintendo should start making gamecubes all over again, but selling them with the component video cable. It is a ultrahigh quality product designed for hardcore gamers.

Hardcore gamers don't care about visual quality, rather performance including input lag, refresh rate, etc. Source: Professional gamer

lolmkolol Sorry, I don't agree. When I look at getting a game, sure, visuals aren't at the top of my list. But they're there.

It's not about agreeing, many casual gamers enjoy visuals over performance

There are different revisions of the GameCube controller. Something I realized after making this video. The main one that I can think that would effect this is the shoulder buttons. There are the style that you see in this video, but there is also a design where the should buttons are part of an assembly you screw in. I've opened up over 20 GameCube controllers since this video and I can say that the design in the video might be more common. You just need to open your controller to verify which it is. I imagine the 3rd party shells are like the design in this video. I would hope anyone selling them you be noting the difference in their listing.

@TheGameBench10 жыл бұрын
@xShadowClaw1x No, that makes perfect sense. The buttons on the GameCube controllers are both analog and digital. Perhaps it's just dirty and there's something sticky causing the rubber contact pad to stick to the board, so it thinks the button is still being pushed. That ot the analog slider is broken. If it's the first problem, and good cleaning should fix it. If it's the second issue the slider would need to be replaced which isn't really worth it. I would just buy another controller at that point.

@TheGameBench8 жыл бұрын
+Shreddy Bass I'm guessing you have a large black plastic piece in the PCB that the force feedback motor sits in? If so, there are to contact pads on each side that go on a small board that sits in that large black plastic piece. They are perfectly round and there will be one on each side. Those are the only other contact pads you might find in a wired GameCube controller. Can't speak to the Wave Birds as I've never opened one up.

That would be my first suspicion. Check to make sure the screws are tight. If they are, try opening it up and see if something is keeping the two halves from secureing all the way. Otherwise, the plastic might just cracking on the inside.
@samuelroy4536 жыл бұрын
@BlastMode7 Did it repair the tightness of the thumb stick ?
@TheGameBench6 жыл бұрын
It wasn't really tight. I've never seen a GameCube joystick I thought was too tight. If you're seeing this on one of your's, perhaps something made it way inside the joystick itself. You could try something like Deoxit55, which is an electronics cleaner, to spray down into the joystick. Spoiler alert... it's messy. It also take some time to dry. You can speed up that process with some compressed air. If that doesn't fix it you might have to replace the joystick.

+Chain Sword I'm not sure. I've never seen the inside of any third party controllers. However, if all that's in there in the micro switch I'm guessing that's all it would take since that's all that's in the first party controllers along with the metal spring which would give a slightly different feel.It wouldn't be hard to get a similar metal and bend it to the same shape.

Hey I had a mad catz GC controller. I loved the one however the cord one time got pinched in the cabinet. Now my favorite GC Controller does not work. I have another same type with sticky buttons and a Z that won't work. Is there a way I can restore both without canablizing one with out spending money note I don't have a gap but I do have soldering gun. and heat shrink.
@TheGameBench10 жыл бұрын
Well, for the cord, you could cut it all the way and strip the wires back. They should be color coded so it would be easy. Then just solder them back together and cover each one is heat shrink or use some other method to isolate them. Then use a piece of heat shrink to cover the joint on the out insolation. As for the buttons, just tear it apart and find out why they're sticking. Probably jest need a cleaning. Use some ISO to clean the contacts on the PCB and pads as well. If they still don't work after a cleaning you can try getting new pads. If it's still a problem, then it's the PCB itself.

Question. Um I dropped my controller and now the R1 button is unresponsive any tips?
@TheGameBench8 жыл бұрын
You'd really have to open to find out. There's quite a lot going on with shoulder buttons. The potentiometer could have been damaged, (the slider). The small board that has the contact for the button itself is pretty small and the bracket which holds it isn't very robust, that could have broken. Less likely would be damage to the actual mechanism. My bet is on the first two being the issue.
@ironeon41738 жыл бұрын
The little button that's under the R1 is jammed how can I fix that? Could I canabalize one from a Xbox controller?

So, the part that the spring is resting on? If so, nope. You won't find that in any X-Box controller. If you just need to replace the rubber pad, you can find those all over the place. If you can't find a round one you could just trim it easily. That, or you could just find a borked GameCube controller and take the entire R button assembly out of it.

@TheGameBench6 жыл бұрын
Hey Dave, there are a few possibilities. Do you know if anything was spilled on it? Anything that keeps the rubber pads from closing the circuit with the contact pads on the board will keep them from working. First I would start with a cleaning, using some isopropyl alcohol. Make sure, both the board and the rubber pads are clean. It's also possible that the rubber pads have come apart. They day out with age and the conditions can accelerate that depending on where you live and they might need to be replaced. If they look visibly fine, but you want to make sure it's not the rubber pads, you can plug the controller into the GameCube with the board exposed and test it by touching the contact pad of each button, one buy one, with something conductive to see if they work or not. Be careful, as static shock can damage the exposed board so if you do this, I suggest you take your socks off and do it in a non-carpeted area and possible use an ESD bracelet to ground yourself. Do this at your own risk. Also, check the wires where they connect to the board and at the connector. If there's an issue there, the controller might register the button presses, but that signal never gets to the console. Lastly, it's possible that there is damage to the board itself or to the controller chip that deals with the inputs of those buttons, though that isn't quite as likely. Best of luck.

+Zyko SSBM Are you saying the two halves won't go back together flush? Or when you screw the screws back in they don't hold them together?
@connorkenney41679 жыл бұрын
+BlastMode7 sort of both, I guess. I can sometimes get a couple screws in.
@TheGameBench9 жыл бұрын
+Zyko SSBM Sounds like some of the standoffs are stripped. The only way to really fix that is to use a larger screw. But the standoffs are so small that they would probably split very easy. You could glue them in, but then it wouldn't be very easy to get apart without damaging it the next time. As for not being able to get the two halves together, the GameCube controller can be a bit tricky and sometimes takes a bit of force to get them to snap back together. Just make sure the shoulder buttons and Z button are good before you apply too much pressure.

If a joystick is loose, does that mean the rubber cap needs to be replaced or the joystick mechanism underneath? Great video by the way, thanks!
@Shyverin6 жыл бұрын
you can oepn it up and see! if you take off the cap itself and notice that the hole it slides into the controller with has become slightly larger, that could be causing the wiggle. Or take the cap off alltogether and try to see if the mechanism itself wiggles when you try to move it around.
@TheGameBench6 жыл бұрын
I've seen some controllers where the hole in the thumbstick, where the actual joystick inserts into it, breaks and allows the thumbstick to flop around. You should be able to tell between that and the joystick itself being loose without taking it apart. However, like Jonah said, if the hole on the thumbstick has gotten larger over time, it might be harder to tell and you might have to take it apart to find out which it is, the joystick or the thumbstick.

My gamecube controller's r button sometimes stucks in game. For example, when I push r while playing Resident Evil 4, the character aims and when I let go, he keeps aiming for 3-4 seconds more than it should. What should I do? (When I push r, it feels fine)
@TheGameBench10 жыл бұрын
I would take it apart and clean the contact pads and boards for the shoulder buttons. If that doesn't work I'd say it might have something to do with the sliders.

Nope, it won't. Sounds like the joystick is drifting. It happens and it's just wearing out. Replacing the actual joystick should solve the issue. When I get back to making videos this is one of the first I would like to do.

I have a question: The plug of the controller isn't making a good contact on the port making the controller input a direction while playing even if the stick isn't moving How do you "open"that plug to clean it?
@TheGameBench9 жыл бұрын
lunas275 Sorry for the slow reply. But if you take the connector and look on the bottom you'll see two holes. The plastic in the holes clips to the metal of the barrel at the end of the connector. If you were to shove a pin or something else thin and pointy in there it should release the plastic and you should be able to slide the metal part of the connector out so you can inspect the connections. Just be careful as the plastic could break.

Hey! I was just wondering something. Are there springs which return the sticks to neutral? What does accomplish this? Would there be any simple way to remove the mechanisms moving the sticks back? Thanks so much!!!
@TheGameBench8 жыл бұрын
I've never seen inside of the actual joystick as they aren't designed to be taken apart. However, I would assume they use a spring of some kind to self center. Sadly, being that they aren't designed to be taken apart I don't think there's a viable way to service them. Luckily, they are cheap to replace and really not that hard. I'm trying to get my hands on one that needs to be replaced to do a video on how to do it but I have yet to find one.

@TheGameBench5 жыл бұрын
If you threw it and it stopped working, that's a really bad sign. You could open it up and visually inspect it and reassemble, but that kind of force can damage processors or crack a PCB. Or, it might have damaged the connections for the cable which is much more practical to fix. Couldn't know for sure without being able to open it up and look at it.

Why not just cut heat shrink along its length and wrap it around the wire/heat blast it?
@TheGameBench5 жыл бұрын
Because, if you cut the heat shrink along the vertical like that, the heat shrink will not hold hold onto the wire. Heat shrink works by shrinking and that pressure holds it to the wire. Cutting it would make it so it couldn't put pressure on the wire and it would just fall off. I really hate the tape method too, but when I re-do this video, I have some better ideas to try.

I got the gg stick caps, they do have pretty good grip and mostly match the color but i noticed that moving it to the notches around the stick doesn't make the same clicking noise it does with a oem, and trying to move it at full range in a circle (touching the rim) is kind of sluggish. id imagine the problem is that the cap isn't raised as much so the rubber and not the plastic is hitting the rim. if anyones gonna get them maybe chip off some of the rubber on the sides and glue it back on.

My GameCube controller L button is unresponsive how do you fix that
@TheGameBench10 жыл бұрын
Well, it could be one of two things. It could be the contact pad or the slider. You can try cleaning the contact pad, and the rubber, and the slider using some 99% ISO or some contact cleaner and then test it out. Usually cleaning the rubber pad and the contact pad fixes those. If not you have a deeper issue which will require parts replacements. Which would mean a new PCB. At that point, it would be easier to just find a replacement controller. With the new ones out I've seen a slight price drop on the older ones. However, MAKE SURE that you let everything dry out after cleaning before plugging it in. Using some canned air will help.

My Gamecube Controller has a problem. When I tap up, it acts as if I'm still holding up. The stick is fine but the controller will keep the input like I'm actually holding up on the stick. I've tried the reset input, but once I tap up, it happens again and won't stop. I'm not sure what's wrong with the controller since everything else works, even the C-stick. Can anyone tell me what the problem is or how to fix it?
@TheGameBench8 жыл бұрын
+D'onte Graves (Creator-Kun) Even though the stick re-centers, that doesn't mean it's fine. I would say the actual joystick, aka potentiometer, needs to be replaced. They're pretty cheap to replace, but you need to desolder the old one and solder the new one on to the board.

kaelan barrios If the problem follows the controller, no matter what port you plug it into then I first suspect the actual joystick and replace it. Though there are other components on the board that "could" potentially cause that. Still, the joystick is the most likely culprit.

can you help me out, i can't find a single tutorioal for this problem that can adress this. the tip of my analogue stick was ripped of by some evil little kid and now i'm stuck with a controller that has a smaller top of the thumb stick (which is actually really precise and good) but it keeps giving me blisters and is super painful to play with. is there any way for me to reattach the nub without having to take apart the controller and use super glue? i looked at it and it's not ripped or anything, it's just that it's pretty IMPOSSIBLE to try and stretch the rubber enough to put it back on the thumb stick. any help would be appreciated because i think it's like impossible for me to try and play melee with this controller and my other controller has like no precision from all the intense rolling from playing dbz and my other one has a completely broken thumb stick. i will fix those in the future but this controller is 100% working and i want to see if i can fix it first immediately. all the buttons work fine all all 3 controllers btw.

+Minimu5e Sorry about the late response. KZbin didn't notify me of the comment. Anyhow, short of gluing it back on the only way to repair it is to really replace the thumbstick which would require taking it apart. However, if you search the are some little rubber covers that slip on over the top of the thumbstick that I've seen for XBox and PlayStation controller thumbsticks. They should work for the GameCube thumbstick and would be a temporary solution.

It was amazingly easy to fix my controller replacing the C stick and thumb stick. I was afraid all the buttons would fall out and the circuit board would make it a pain to put the controller back together or the shoulder buttons would pose a problem getting them back without a problem of linnig them up properly so they don't miss attaching to the slider switches. It went back together with no troubles lining up the 2 halves. Much better than the piece of crap third party controller that fell apart when I opened it.

Don't use Windex! 91% or higher isopropyl only!
@TheGameBench6 жыл бұрын
The reason I said to start with Windex was because there was a lot of crud. Dirt, hair, crumbs? Windex does a better job of doing that. After I said to follow it up with some IPA. I didn't use it to clean any solder joints and if you're insinuating that Windex can harm the PCB itself, it won't. Regardless, I cleaned it with IPA right after so it's a moot point.
