I love how pissed people are that a band who (eventually) got big by doing whatever the hell they wanted are doing whatever the hell they want. When the riff drops back in after Lyxzen's 'Kill kill kill, go!' it's beautiful. I'd listen to Sandstrom drum on anything.

I love how people dislike this song but this is such a Refused song. Since "The Shape of Punk to Come" they've expirimented with mixing in other styles with thier music. "Deadly Rhythm" is clearly jazz and hardcore. "New Noise' is definately techno and hardcore. This song is a mix between pop and hardcore. It's what they do, they expiriment with blending other genres with hardcore.

Refused are pushing their art-punk limits on this album, and that's not a bad thing. It shows that they're not just content to rehash old ideas. It's gonna be hit and miss, sure, and a lot of people will hate it. But that's what makes them who they are. Remember how hated they were when they dropped The Shape of Punk to Come in the late 90s? Alienating hardcore kids has always been their thing.
@rappre9 жыл бұрын
Philip Whitehead maybe you are right. as always there is no point in flaming about music genres. But when you say that your band is dead for an entire "last" concept album, maybe it's "rather be dead"
@LaMortDeLaMusique9 жыл бұрын
I don't think they anticipated how fucked the world would be by 2012 and with their considerable influence which emerged post-break up (remember part of the reason they broke up was because of how badly people treated them at gigs e.g. "YOU LOOK LIKE THE FUCKING BEATLES"), they probably felt both the drive and the demand to come back, which they would never have anticipated in 1998. It's hardly a cash grab either cos Epitaph aren't exactly a huge label. If they'd gone to RCA/Nuclear Blast/Universal/Sony then you could call them out but they didn't, they stuck with the label that had faith in them when nobody else did back in the 90s.
@andrewwesson46099 жыл бұрын
Philip Whitehead the thing is the shape of punk to come, if not entirely original, was at least doing shit a lot of people hand't heard before. this is doing things we have heard before and not doing them particularly well. I don't mind them experimenting, I just don't think this is a good song.

heavy, melodic, tight with classic Refused rhythm, screaming for a cause, a voice to be heard, the end is the best, the drums are just huge and guitars are wide open, everything has it's perfect space, they always know how to get it done correctly, both songs so far have been nothing short of what I expect from talent like this, Refused just find a way to take their unique funky off rhythms and somehow make them accessible, magic

refused are great ... i love this song so much ... its not as hard as "flame to" but the songwriting is groovy and the strength of "shape" was its varity of songs. I´m really forward for more. When i started to listen to refused i was young, around 16, now (14 years later) i´m grown and i appreciate grown music, which is well written. It´s not like Muse or Rise Against - their´re later release were a little bit of dissapointing, but still allright, but after i now the other projects of dennis, i expect, he will deliver and kick ass as always. It was always about Heart, Soul and Music.

PJ ive read it before i heard this song, but it doesnt change my opinion about this song. the problem is not a different sound, but that this song is lame "stadium rock" as someone wrote before. we are talking about refused and not about justin bieber or something where "fans" don´t care about music. i dont think that dennis lyxzen et al start to cry if somebody criticising ONE of their new songs...

So many whiny comments. Suck it up. They can do whatever they want, it's their band. I like moments of Refused. Can't say their entire catalog is great. I like that they're doing something different. It doesn't sound like anyone else out there right now does it? I don't agree with flagging them as selling out. I don't think they're trying to write hits. While this song IS a bit weak, it shows this band isn't going to release an album filled with safe songs. Plus I see this song being a grower.
@ChocoFudgelet9 жыл бұрын
Whilst I agree that this isn't their best work, it seems that 90% of the comments on here are from people wanting to here another bunch of songs that would have been at home on The Shape of Punk to Come. French imperialism in africa was bad. The thing is, 99% of the references in this song deal with the *BELGIAN* Congo under King Leopold II and later Mobutu Sese Seko. France did it's share of bad things, but the belgian congo was ALL BELGIUM. This song specifically calls out Paris. It's really, really dumb. Like a high school book report that blames Canada for the massacre at Wounded Knee.

I get a feeling a lot of Refused "fans" only listened to them because it's "hardcore, man!" and it gives them a reason to get a nose ring and thrash around their parents suburban basement mindlessly. Listen to these lyrics and the general bite of the song. Talking about French colonialism through the eyes of a historically oppressed continent is "stadium rock" or "radio rock" to you?? Name ONE stadium rock song that addresses issues like this....I dare you. If you listen to Refused solely for the "hard" riffs and ignore the message and lyrics behind the art, you're better off listening to Disturbed or some shit. And hopefully this album drives your ass away from their next show.
