I really appreciate this. I understand your frustration because I bought the Shoemaker book he quotes and I've only read the first 50 pages and I find myself getting quite frustrated with how badly he misrepresented Shoemaker's words. I had read "Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary by Brant Pitre a year ago, so I could see that Gavin was not analyzing the fullness of the evidence. You have provided even more evidence, some of which was not in Brant Pitre's book so thank you for that.

Here's a cumulative case against Protestantism: 1. It came into existence 1500 years after Christ. 2. It's innately divisive because every man is his own pope, thus you get 30,000 denominations all claiming to be guided by the Holy Spirit, reading the same Bible but teaching contradicting theology. 3. The doctrine of Sola scripture is not scriptural. 4. The list of books in the Bible can't be found in the Bible, you have to appeal to church councils (Church authority). 5. Salvation by faith alone (one's moral choices don't matter at all) doesn't square with the teachings of Christ and the rest of the NT. 6. It ignores the fact that Christ gave his disciples binding teaching authority. 7. It ignores the fact that the real presence of Christ in Holy Communion was universally believed in the early church by men who were either trained by the disciples or once removed from the disciples. 8. Major doctrines get really diluted--such as baptism. The idea that baptism is purely symbolic and doesn't regenerate the baptized person's soul is not supported in the NT or the early church. 9. You end up getting a strange idea of the "invisible" church to explain away the disunity of "visible" Christianity. Or the unscriptural idea that "we all believe the same core things" therefore there's unity. 10. The only church that goes all the way back to the apostles is the Catholic Church. All other denominations came from the mind of one person. For example John Calvin, Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli, Alexander Stone, John Wesley, King Henry VIII, etc.

Do be careful with the way that this is used because some of these points don’t apply to all protestants. Although I do not know of a single protestant that affirms transubstantiation, most affirm a form of real presence, with some even saying that his body and blood are physically in the eucharist (although they wouldn’t go the final step in affirming transubstantiation). Also there are a lot of protestants that affirm a form of baptismal regeneration, but it’s probably for the best you read like a protestant confession on their beliefs so that you know if they believe in some sort of covenant theology thing, words of institution, etc. That being said, most of these points are good, and I would add things such as the papacy, apostolic succession, image veneration (actually this one might be pretty weak as an apologetic weapon since protestants might just ignore you on something like this completely), and the church as mother and ark. God bless.

Unfortunately, people are cutting Gavin too much slack just because he has the appearance of being "charitable." Noticeably too, people are praising him too much because of that. That's nice and all, but let's not lose sight that he is distorting the truth and has misunderstood, if not misrepresented, the Fathers in multiple occasions. So this is rather a breath of fresh air.

It seems that many Protestants read the fathers from a Sola Scriptura mindset. They assume everything is written down and thus if something isn’t written about until a certain century, it must mean that’s when it was first believed.

However, I don't believe he is so sensitive to take comments to be so hurtful to lead him to not want to engage. I feel like believing the Assumption to be a gnostic idea is inherently contradictory. Why would a group characterized by the idea of the flesh being utterly without value and a thing to be escaped from, who call the Incarnation an illusion, seek to place value on the Blessed Mother's physical body being rejoined to her soul in Heaven?

There are some truths that only the heart can know. A disciple of Jesus is being conformed into the likeness of Jesus. Becoming more like Jesus means having a heart like His, meaning a heart that intensely loves His mother. Loving Mary is the most Christlike thing to do. And having this connection with Jesus means a heart that knows that the Jesus who raised His friend Lazarus to life for the glory of God has also raised His mother and assumed her for the glory of God. Evidence is secondary on matters that only the heart can truly and deeply know. Knowing that godly men and women, martyrs and saints throughout 2000 years of Christianity believed it is secondary to what we personally know first hand with our heart.

Gavin simply assumes that the stuff he disagrees with must be non-orthodox. Now the stuff he does agree with that can only be found in documents dating to the 4th, 5th, or 16th centuries, he has no problem calling orthodox. What he should be doing instead is saying, how was orthodoxy determined so I can comport my views to that. Because currently he just picks and chooses what documents and authorities he likes that he can import his 21st century evangelical tradition into to give it a veneer of historical authenticity.
@l21n182 жыл бұрын
Which is why I don’t care at all for his “nice guy” veneer when it’s used to advance such deceitful argumentation. I mean he tries to co-opt the fathers for his understanding of baptism, even rabid anti-Catholics like James White and William Webster aren’t that duplicitous, they’re at least honest on that issue.

William I commented on your channel before on a video about Mike Winger. I commented that you were being to uncharitable to Mike winger and were using too harsh language, such that I thought Protestants would have been put off by it. You told me to never comment on your channel again. But I’ve watched many broadcasts since, including your other responses to Mike Winger, and I have to say I think that one video was a fluke. Usually you are completely fair in your commentary, and your arguments and evidence are just undeniable. You are a great gift for the Church. I would only say to perhaps be more generous to those who comment about your attitude. That comment almost made me unsubscribe, but I knew you had the truth with you. Protestants may be less willing to stick with you if they are dismissed, which from this video it seems you are already more clear on this. Thanks again William, God bless 🙏

PRAYER TO MARY, QUEEN OF THE ANGELS [ August Queen of Heaven Prayer ] An Indulgence of 300 days. (S. C. Ind., July 8, 1908; S. P. Ap., Mar. 28, 1935) August Queen of Heaven and Mistress of the Angels, thou who hast received from God the power and the mission to crush the head of Satan: we humbly ask thee to send to us thy heavenly legions so that, under thy command, they may pursue the demons let loose upon the earth, fight them everywhere, vanquish their audacity, and drive them back into the abyss. “Who is like unto God?” O good and tender Mother, thou shalt ever be our love and our hope. O divine Mother, send the Holy Angels to defend us [me] and repel far from us [me] the cruel enemy. Holy Angels and Archangels, defend and keep us. Amen. THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS PRAYER [Please Read] The faithful are asked to say this prayer frequently and fervently. It is of great importance given the following remarkable background: [1] The prayer was dictated by the Blessed Mother herself to the holy and venerable priest, Fr. Louis-Édouard Cestac, on January 13, 1863 as a means to combat the powers of Hell. [2] An exorcism prayer in itself, this is a formidable prayer for “spiritual battle” especially needed for our times when the ravages caused by the fallen angels are everywhere conspicuous and unrelenting. [3] It is a prayer approved by the Church: It was recommended to the faithful by Pope Pius IX, and later indulgenced by both Popes Leo XIII and Pius X. Prayers of the Auxilium Christianorum - Fr. Yes, you are being mean, although you are not being intentionally mean. First, I am a Protestant. I really enjoy listening to your videos. You make a lot of good points that force me as a Protestant to examine my beliefs. That is a good thing. Also, many of the critiques you make of Protestantism are admittedly good. So, how are you being mean? It’s not your response or objections to his points that is mean. It is you accusing him of negative intentions such as being misleading.l or dishonest. Consider that some people see things differently. It’s not that someone is being misleading, they may actually think they are right. So it’s the job of others who oppose them to bring the facts that show they are wrong without accusing him of negative motives. As I said, I have no problem with your rebuttals and critiques of Protestantism. There is no need to accuse folks of being dishonest. As I said though, I enjoy your videos and I pray you keep making them. All the best to you 🙂👍🏿
