I was ready to give up on a 40 year old planar 3 after the motor stopped working, but fortunately I watched this video. I replaced the capacitor and resistor (easy job thanks to the video) and everything is sorted. I cannot thank you enough!

I cured my Rega running fast problem by using two rubber bands on the platter wheel , this slight increase in diameter not only gave the correct speed but gives better drive torque through the belt. 😊😊. These are really fine players whatever model you have .I never tire of hearing mine with its RB300 arm.

I have a Planar-2 of the same vintage (1982 motor, serial number a little earlier than yours) and it's the exact same motor circuit as yours. Nice job. I would also recommend to others that if they must replace the resistor then replace the 0.22uF capacitor as well on equipment this old.

Yes, that is going to be Video #3 ... I just need to get a deck in showing the correct symptoms. I change the cap as part of the service now as they are all coming to the end of their lives

Does that green replacement resistor have to be orintated a certain way round or can it be soldered in either way round??Also what is the exact spec of the replacement K ohms wattage voltage etc??
@cheshireaudio
@cheshireaudio 3 жыл бұрын
It's a 12k resistor ... it can be fitted either way. Rega have used various values over the years ... lower value gives less torque but more noise, higher, the reverse. 12 seems best compromise

How does the Acos arm compare with the RB300?

Morning bruva. Can you please tell me exactly what to order re the two capacitors or resistors. Please excuse my ignorance. Also where to purchase the rubber suspension belt thingy for the motor? Thanks in advance.

still trying to get mine sorted! its a P1,was in storage for a while cannot seem to get it to run right. its either too fast or too slow. trided chamging the belt and that did not help,same effect even though the new belt seemed more "tight"! what could be the problem? Gonna try and clean ,but did that as soon as i got it back, but back to running fast!

I've got an old Planar 2 with a 24v conversion. I can't get it play in tune. the pitch shifts constantly. I've tried new belts and spent for the silicone. could it be the bearing? Was hoping you''d ave a part 3 up by now... thanks
@cheshireaudio
@cheshireaudio 4 жыл бұрын
Unlikely to be the bearing ... make sure everything is clean. use isopropyle alcohol or something similar to clean the pulley and belt, there could be some contamination there. It's unusual to have issues with the 24v type. Make sure the pulley is properly attached. How are you detecting the pitch? by ear or are you using an app?
@cheshireaudio
@cheshireaudio 4 жыл бұрын
make sure you still have a ball bearing at the bottom of the bearing housing .... I'm going to do #3 soon, but it applies to earlier mains voltage decks not the 24v
@wilko10

@@cheshireaudio thanks for replies. I converted to 24v as recommended as the table would not spin up to 33rpm. I can hear it warble out of tune on long sustaining notes and chords and such. Bugs the crap out of me. Haven't used an app, don't need it -- I know when its pitch shifting.
@wrankin
@wrankin 4 жыл бұрын
The motor is synchronous so it's locked (more or less) to your mains frequency. Check to make sure that the pulley is not slipping on the motor shaft. You could also have a failing component on the 24v motor control board which is a bit more complex than the earlier 115v motor.

Took my planar 3 to Philip yesterday to work his magic on it was it has started to run slow towards the end of an LP. Fix and a service will hopefully have it right as rain again.

Les, it's running as we speak ... issue solved. Just trying to decide whether to change the suspension belt

Useful video if my Planer 1 stops! I find it disappointing mine runs too fast to play along with things though.

Swap the resistor for another 0.22UF capacitor, was actually recommended by Rega . The capacitor generates no heat unlike the resisitor.
@cheshireaudio
@cheshireaudio 3 жыл бұрын
It's an option, but trying to keep things simple ... it does actually make the motor run quieter, but seems to reduce torque
@depechem0demusic

If that is the case why didn’t Rega fit two caps originally??
