I thought the fork lift footage was Very creative! And yes, I too would love to see how you coaxed that magical image out of a good shot. Some cropping, cloning, lightening, etc., but what you did is very special. As you were lamenting about your current lack of creativity, I was reflecting on my own photography while traveling. Sometimes the constraints of travel make it impossible to get to a certain place during the best light, or without crowds, etc. I try mightily to create something out of very little. Sometime, perhaps you could do a vlog on "Creating something out of nothing." (Even if it isn't a landscape, but just a pleasing image.) Thanks for another excellent week.

The last image is wonderful and has an ethereal quality - the tree "beckoning" you in past the gate but then the path leading off into nothingness. Very well done. Love to see the editing for it.

I love that last Image, Nigel. My first thought when I saw it was, "where are the fairies dancing?" The shot has a very mystical, fairy tail feel to it. Again like there should be fairies or woodland animals, wearing clothes, dancing or having a tea party on that path. Also, i'd love to see how you edited that shot. Keep up the great work (which includes showing us that we're not the only ones out here making mistakes.)

Hi Nigel. Thanks for another informative and high quality post. May I make a request? I watch you on YT on my TV. The issue is when you show your photos with the exposure etc info at the bottom, it passes really quickly. If you pause the video you get a load of YT stuff that blocks that very helpful info. Is there any way it could be relocated to the top, please? Thanks, David

This video was very timely for me. Currently I am in The Black Hills of South Dakota and the landscape and weather is much the same as what you are dealing with in the video. I am going to try "shooting high" as I have never tried the technique. Also, I disagree with the location of the fence post. I like it as the sign gave a sense of place and it hinted at the beginning of a story. As always, interesting and informative.

Man I so relate to this topic. I go in and out of that creative mindset almost manically. I think much of the time it has to do with being ‘original’ and just wishing I was further along in my learning.

Great video. Had a similar experience last week in going out and spending ages on a shot which turned out as average then I did a couple of ad hoc shots as the sunset arrived and got something a bit different and love the output. This is an interesting and timely video for me, I am deep into a creative funk and have been for a while. I went out a while ago a took some shots which I was reasonably pleased with but when I posted them on Instagram they received a luke warm response and since then I have barely picked up my camera and I have (temporarily) abandoned my social media channels. Next week I have a 3 day trip to Northumberland booked and I am hoping I can break the funk otherwise I don't know what.

I must say that seeing the ‘before’ and ‘after’ from RAW to final image is of great comfort to me. I’ve also got that Fuji 10-24 and love it. It’s surprisingly difficult to use well because at its widest it includes SO much and has incredible dof. It makes it difficult to isolate any key subjects in an image. So I’m thinking that some of those images might just have benefitted from some tighter framing? Perhaps a case of less is more? I’m no expert but these are scenes I love to shoot so they strike chord with me and made me think about it a bit. For what it’s worth that’s my 2.5p contribution!

I can't wait to get your 2020 calendar! I just hope we have better luck with delivery than last year when Hurricane Florence flooded a mail distribution center. Many times when we get back and look at the image on a larger screen we see how the composition can be improved. When you’re out in the field a limitation you have is not having that large screen to review the image. Maybe tethering the camera to a laptop with a larger screen or bringing an external monitor could help with composition.

Great image of the footpath Nigel. I'd certainly like to see how you processed the image particularly, how you managed to remove the National Trust signage seamlessly. I'm now thinking of how many compositions I've looked at in the past thinking x, y, or z spoil the view and not taken the shot. It's amazing how easy it is to overlook the obvious and just remove it in photoshop.
