BMW M240i Wavetrac Differential Upgrade & Comparison to Quaife Differential (internals comparison!)

Nice video! It really is interesting how BMW creates the M240i, with 368(!!) pounds of torque. And have NO limited slip diff installed. If you drive a Ford Focus, I get it, you don't need one. But for something that is obviously race inspired and appropriately tuned, and costing around $50k U.S, I just don't understand why it doesn't have one. The car already costs $50k. BMW could probably put a proper LSD on there at a manufacturer cost must cheaper then what aftermarket it. I personally feel that performance is much better with the LSD, and in spirited driving, its heck of a lot safer too.

Thank you! BMW have to limit the performance somehow and this is one of the key ways, not forgetting that they do have a highly watered-down version of a Drexlar available as a 'M Performance LSD' - so they are probably going after the accessory sales here. 100% with you on the safety aspect

Even the 370z base with sport package has a VLSD. For way cheaper and with less torque (less needed than this BMW) Kinda shitty for BMW on that part.

So if I understand correctly wavetrac is basically Helical LSD but with Clutch LSD lock. So if You can have locked diff if you want some fun ?

Not quite, Wavetrac has a device that prevents the problem that happens with all other ATBs. It does not lock, it can simply still bias in situations whereby other ATB LSDs would perform less, or not at all. In summary, you are getting an LSD that works like an LSD all of the time, rather than in certain conditions.

Where would the M Performance LSD fall into comparison between the quaife and wavetrac?

The M Performance is a very 'watered down' version of a plate differential, it's locking force and preload is low, as well as needing to be routinely maintained to retain the friction of the friction material and preload reset. You used to install a plate diff because is had better no/low load performance vs. an ATB, like the Quaife but Wavetrac has since solved that issue with their patented design. So with the Wavetrac you get the low NVH and low service requirements of an ATB but without any sacrifice of low/no load performance. Hope that helps!
