My Grandfather was part of 1 Hampshire Regiment which took part in the Christmas Truce. He was given a gift by a German soldier. It was a small cloth bag that had Merry Christmas 1914 embroidered into it. I have it today together with his WW1 medals. The following year he was injured by a bullet that hit his metal button on his jacket and deflected it into his shoulder. He recovered from the wound and served out the rest of the war including the Gallipoli campaign.

What a lovely memory you have of a wonderful man. Who wanted peace, but as usual the government and big wigs who sit in offices and war rooms want to wage war. I am sure you will pass that 110 year old item along to another family member and keep the story alive forever. My father served in WW2 he was from Northern Ireland and also got injured in the shoulder by shrapnel. He served the rest and never spoke much about it. He married my mum in 1947 and had 14 children and we're married for 60 years. Unfortunately they both passed away aged 84. But what is left of their family is 11 kids youngest 55 oldest 75.

Some officers were unhappy at the truce and worried that it would undermine fighting spirit. After 1914, the High Commands on both sides tried to prevent any truces on a similar scale happening again.: Officers worried that soldiers would see each other as people, rather than enemies. the ad brings a tear to my eye everytime x

My grandfather was a driver gunner in the Western Front forward British artillery in WW1 and was there when this happened. It was entirely spontaneous an d he always insisted that in spite of the ceasefire the fraternisation between opposing forces was unexpected by and was never sanctioned by anyone in command on either side, including local frontline command. However, on both sides, that fraternisation negated the deliberately inculcated dehumanisation of the "enemy" by the high command on both sides. It certainly convinced my grandfather and many, many more on either side that such wars were entirely political and should never have been fought and neither should they ever again be fought by ordinary people who had nothing to gain from them. He then tried to raise his boys, my father and uncles, never to fight in wars between the UK and other nations intiated by invested personal ambitions and resulting mutual political animosity towards those who for the same motives opposed them. He may have been right about WW1 and wars previous to that but how wrong he was about WW2. The real problem is getting people everywhere and in every nation to refuse to fight wars on behalf of the less than 5% of the population comprising the competing hierarchies whose personal ambitions of domination, personal enrichment in material terms and in terms of overarching power domestically and abroad, fuel warfare locally, nationally and internationally.

@@crackpot148 Ironically the Christmas truce and the realisation of the shared religious traditions between the combatants led to a precipitous decline in Christianity in Europe in the aftermath of World War One. Soldiers on both sides were indoctrinated into believing that theirs was a righteous cause and that God was on their side. When allied soldiers found German slogans saying "Gott mit uns" and saw that the Germans were Christians too and saw that the church in Germany was telling the country's young men exactly the same "God is on our side" propaganda it caused millions of them to question their faith. The same applied to the Christmas truce when soldiers tried to obey the principles of peace and goodwill only to be told that it didn't apply to the enemy. How could God be on both sides? How could God represent peace and goodwill and yet let such terrible things happen? After the war hundreds of thousands of soldiers declared themselves atheists and the Christian faith in Europe began a long downward slide from which it has never recovered.

The beauty about British Christmas adverts is that they are never about "buy this latest toy/thing' but are just about love at this time of year - or funny like 'Kevin the Carrot' Christmas ads from Aldi (a supermarket chain). Happy Christmas to you and your family. ❤

How could you be so wrong? These are adverts produced by huge profit-making companies whose only ever endeavour is for you to buy their product through sentimental manipulation. It's not about love, it's about shareholders.

That German one at the end. I saw a version of that where the guy was on the phone, talking to his daughter about him considering getting divorced. She freaked, insisting he not say to the mam what he's thinking. She phoned her brother, he then phoned his dad saying the same thing as his sister had said, and told him that they'd both be there the next day. He put the phone down, turned to his wife "They're both coming for Christmas, and they're paying for it themselves" 😂. ❤ from Northeast England ❤️

I used to love Christmas. My daughter was born Christmas week and everything at this time of the year was about her. It was wonderful. She died at 33 waiting for a kidney transplant. I hate Christmas now, it’s so miserable without her. She would have been 40 this year and it just feels like I’m losing her all over again. In 7 years she has died a million times to me. However, I would love to enjoy it and I sincerely want everyone else to feel the special vibes of Christmas. These adverts are ones I watched with her and we shed a few tears together. Now, I just cry all the time when I am alone. I do so wish everyone a happy Christmas though and please remember to make your loved ones feel special. You never know how long you will have them. xxx

Released in 1983, the lyrics describe the Christmas Day truce that occurred between Allied and German soldiers on the front line in France during World War I in 1914. Afterr you watch the official music video, you'll see where the Sainsbury's ad campaigners 'stole' the idea. The German soldier, in each video, has the same name, and both soldiers end up with each other's personal effects.

There's letters home from soldiers, reports from war diaries and documents from commanding officers explaining the events. The truce was trying to be organized days before Christmas so the soldiers took it upon themselves to initiate it (leaders from both sides were adament a truce would not happen). Obviously the entire front line didn't walk out and have a game of football that would be ridiculous so there would be soldiers who say it never happened. There is however enough evidence to claim it as a fact.

I had tears in my eyes during the John Lewis add and I don’t even care about penguins! I also think you guys have nailed your presentation with the background you use. By far the best reaction channel. Can’t wait to see penguins outside your window………

Wow Mike how lucky are you.. your Dad is with you and by your side. Those dreams are so special. Great ads, no commercial ism just the spirit of Christmas is what it is all about, just being together and enjoying each other's company. Merry Christmas to you both and your family, enjoy the season. Another great series to watch is Rescue Vet (UK) - the 12 Days of Christmas, he is up to Day 10 today and everyone has been meaningful for the pets in our world.

Two of my uncles on my father's side were soldiers in WW2. One of them was captured at Tobruck and was a POW for the rest of the war. The other one was a mechanic in South African Air Force abd was with a flight group called the Flying Marauders in Italy. My father joined the SAAF as a radio operator a few months before the war ended.

That Sainsbury's advert has me in tears every time. "My name is Jim." "My name is Otto." There will never be another advert like it.

My Dad has been gone nearly 3 years now. And I think i would appreciate to even have a dream about him just to hear his voice again, even if that is just a thought in my head. I think I have only had one dream about him since he passed away. And weirdly enough. The last day I spent with him was on Christmas Day. He died not long afterwards
