I got goosebumps as soon as he walked on. I love Jesus and he was in agony when he was praying in the garden. This portrays all the emotion he must have suffered-excellent performance ♥️

Goosebumps, I have seen Jesus Christ Superstar on stage 18 times & Steve is one of the best. ❤️🇬🇧
@Jawa1604Ай бұрын
This is such a powerful performance. He makes those top notes look so easy! This is my favourite performance of this song because the emotion is so raw. The musical is written by two giants of the British Theatre world, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Time Rice. It was a real struggle for them to get backing for it due to the subject matter but it first opened on Broadway in 1971. As others have said, watch the film. I've also watched a live recording of this show with John Legend as Jesus and Alice Cooper as King Herod but I can't remember where I saw it!

To me, the most powerful rendition still is Ted Neely in the movie, maybe because it’s the first one I heard/saw. The movie is awesome.

Ian Gillan and Steve Balsamo are both absolutely awesome. But it's Ted Neeley for me too (incredibly he's still performing this role well into his 70s!). I think it's because he has a grittier "rock" tone in his high notes which doesn't particularly sound like he's singing falsetto.
@malingor7042Ай бұрын
@@ramsey6681 well past that, Ted is 81 ! Look up ''Ted Neeley'' at 80 singing it, at first you think he's miming to a 50 year old clip, that's how good he is

I saw him perform this in the London revival of the show in 1996 and he was excellent. But I also saw the original London show in 1973 with the actor Paul Nicholas (UK viewers will know him from the sitcom Just Good Friends) playing the lead and his rendition was just sensational. The original album in 1970 featured Ian Gillan, the lead singer from Deep Purple. Lloyd-Webber and Rice have said that no other singer or performer has ever matched Gillan's scream in the Temple scene! Incidentally, Gillan also recorded all his vocals for the album in about three hours!

I get frustrated when people say Steve is 'good...' because they prefer their fave lead in JC, even Andrew Lloyd Webber says hes 'extraordinary' and he wrote the thing😂😂😂 Ive been a huge fan of Steve for years. It was Andrew Lloyd Webber who 'discovered' him, he went for an audition that Andrew happened to be at and sang....like that!!! Andrew was blown away. 😂 i know this because in another life,im 66, i was in Musical Theatre here in the UK, West End and touring companies chorus of Les Mis, Phantom, JCSS & many more. Steve is a Welsh man, very proud of being Welsh, another great Welsh voice. . Ive seen him as Jesus and Marius in Les Mis. As well as having the most beautiful voice hes the sweetest kindest person on the planet, real gentleman and how can he be 53 already ❤😂😂😂 And guys....lets get it right..ALL the musical theatre leads in JC are amazing !! they wouldnt be cast as lead by Andrew if they werent. He still handpicks his leading cast members. Hes extremely tough about his leading actors. They are the creme de la creme 😂 Ted Neeley was in the original film thdres another film that Andrew made with Glen Carter another Brit who played Jesus in the West End and on Broadway. Hes wonderful too. The show changes to keep pace with changing trends...the last huge reincarnation here in London at the O2 was amazing with Tim Minchin as Judas. Just phenomenal. One thing being in the cast for a number of years...you cannot imagine the toll it takes on whoever plays Jesus. The voice yes, but the Crucifixion Is really really hard on the body and the voice.. Theyre worn to a frazzle by the end of a run.

My favourite show. That's the best I've ever heard that song sung. It was what in the 1970s they called a Rock Opera, it was a popular thing at the time. It remember when this came out, I was going to see it but was ill on the day. I finally saw it a my local theatre last June. As I work there and was ushering most of that week I got to see it four more times. I really recommend seeing the whole show. It's performed from the point of view of Judas and I really conveys why he betrayed Jesus.
@yelnikigwawa18452 күн бұрын
The lyricist Tim Rice was not a believer at the time he wrote Jesus Christ Superstar. So he took pains to write Jesus as not divine, but just a man, wrestling with his doubts. Hence, the last line of the song. You might want to check out the original version of this. The role of Jesus was sung by Ian Gillan, lead singer of Deep Purple. It's raw, and it's stayed with me for 50 years.

To me this is still the ultimate Gethsemane, what Balsamo does here is just simply astounding: combining raw emotion with technically perfect singing. He did another song at that same show, a song called Immortal in which he portrays the writer Edgar Allen Poe and in which he is deliberating wether he will be remembered after he is gone. It was a song from a musical called Poe written by Eric Woolfson who pretty much wrote all the songs for The Alan Parsons Project. The musical itself sadly never went into full scale production, at least not in the UK or US, but that song is amazing. Sadly there is only one video of it on KZbin and it has a bit of distorted sound but it is still very very good: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZfWgYZ-f5hlgpI

I had to go back to watch your other reaction, as that was before I came across your channel. I love JCS, I've seen it about half a dozen times. This is one of the standout moments in the musical which is why I guess these singers choose it as a standalone performance. But it really needs to be seen in the context of the musical as a whole, where the tone switches between a sweet funny song at the Last Supper, to Gethsemane, and then to the drama of Jesus's arrest. It's a massive part for an actor, he's hardly off the stage and barely gets time to breathe - although this song usually gets its own ovation from the audience. I must say, the two versions you've watched have been good, but I feel I've seen better live. When Jesus is standing there just a few feet away, and he hits that note, it's astonishing. And I'm an atheist as well . . . May I suggest a couple of songs from the 2012 Arena Tour, available on KZbin: Tim Minchin singing the fabulous 'Heaven On Their Minds' and Melanie C singing the lovely 'I Don't Know How To Love Him'. (And a a version of 'Gethsemane' by Ben Forster that's even better than the two you've watched so far!) Love the channel. I watched the one about plugs then watched Jesus defying God. That's variety!
