my bike has regen braking and it is awesome. not only does it save brake pads it is a smooth experience and i feel very in control. (spent last week riding around with a broken brake lever and never felt unsafe...fixed it anyhow to be sure to be sure) the bike is currently set up with a throttle and no pedal assist sensor (because they are retarded and unsafe) and i have my kelly controller programmed to engage regen on drop throttle. much like a drag brake on an rc car. i achieve "coasting" by applying the throttle gently and can vary or maintain my speed at will. much like engine braking using the gears of a car. as for "not much momentum" its all relative a bike has not much but requires little power to initiate movement. likewise a car has a lot but takes a lot to get moving so its a mute point. any way that said my bike weighs a lot and i appreciate the extra braking to help pull me up without needing to wear out pads. presenter has obviously never riden a 1000w bldc throttle driven ebike with regen.

hey can you send me the link for your controller model

There are great systems for variable regen braking on ebikes, I do realize this video was probably posted before these existed. These systems use a button to activate them and the existing throttle to increase braking force

There are some things to think about that is very interesting with generative breaking. Have you not ever wonder that if you could give a small dose of energy back to the battery over time so you can use it uphill instead really having to struggle. I'm sure you done test with this and you base this video on the conclusion of the test but did you notice that the slower you drive the more energy you can put back into the battery. This is because the wind takes most of the energy.

I found myself asking this and being told all the negative aspects and numbers of why I "don't really want regen brakes" from salesmen. I read that blog on the 'cons' of regen before and after I bought my bionx and now totally disagree . Proper use of regen has doubled my range to 40 miles in the hilly NW. Then theres e-braking. In the rain e-brakes work as good as drum or hydro . With little or no added weight since every hub motor is already a gen when polarity is switched properly .

Do regen controllers have lower top speeds? Can it damage the batteries? I'm not sure if I want regen. I'm not concerned with increased range, I want to know if it's worth it for the braking capabilities (and decrease the need for friction brakes) I would probably be getting a rear gearless brushless hub motor either way.

Actually it makes a huge difference to 1 brake where and tear, and also 5-10% is not to be sneezed at!

Maybe some of that wasted energy could be used to put a wind sock on that mic. I live in an area with extreme hills and need the regen to with the disc brakes.

It's the most useful feature. improving range by 30 % !!! sorry the site is in Italian. :(

@cleanairaus 4ah at how many volts and how much time you need to put anything noticeable back into the battery. Regen might be useful if you go downhill for a couple of miles but on flat surface its just a useless gimmick..

to implement regen adds what? 50g and we can all agree it will slow the bike down and not wear brake pads whilst it does it, looks like a no brainier to me. think of it like this Imagen if every time you wanted to stop you had to pedal backwards, it would take a lot of effort. lets be conservative and say that by the time you have stored energy in a battery and recovered it to the motor you can use 50% of it. that will add whole miles to your range under normal riding if you adjust your riding style to take full advantage it could make an even bigger range extension. dont forget it takes the same amount of energy to accelerate as to decelerate weather you are a car or a bike or anything

Momentum goes with velocity squared? Bullshit. "kinetic energy" is the word you're looking for. Get your science right if you talk all scientifically.
