Good morning Doug. Got to this one a little late. Now I only have a few minutes. But I am enjoying it so far. So the artist's name is Chalawa? Doing dub covers of the whole Exodus album? Interesting. Will be back to enjoy some more. Got to run out for a few~ Rob/Boston

Hello Rob! Yes a Canadian (mostly instrumental) group called Chalawa - the core was two white musicians but they played with some heavy duty Jamaican players who were in Toronto such as Leroy Sibbles and blended reggae with rock and world music textures. Quite interesting and they put out this whole dub rendition of the Exodus album. Worth a listen for sure, kind of a jazzy dub vibe in places ~

Big ups on the Pro-Ject! I like their stuff. If I ever switch from my Technics table, Pro-Ject are tops on my radar. Exodus in Dub sounds like a fun listen. Love all the 45s; they're like potato chips - you can't have (play) just one. Still haven't seen One Love yet; waiting for the streaming rental price to dip below $19.99, or shift to a lower-price theater. it's still in the big theaters nearby but I could only find a morning showing today. Hope all is well! Cheers, Tom

Thanks Tom! I've been eyeing moving up to a Pro-Ject for a long time - this was a lucky deal that happened to come my way. Exodus In Dub is a fun one, gets kind of jazzy in places, mainly the guitar textures. 45's are a lot of fun to play, though I have to be in the right mood for it. A bit like programming your own radio show! Not in any hurry to see One Love, I might stream it one day - don't think I'm really the target audience for it anyway, more about the younger generation not quite so familiar with Bob and his story. Cheers!

Always good to upgrade equipment. Now my dad has gone it's going to be even more difficult for me to part with his old Thorens turntable which is now pretty old but going steady (though it is now very reluctant to play at 45rpm). I hate the idea of film producers and writers making 'narrative choices' when making films about real people's lives....in balance I think I will probably avoid the Bob biopic. Nice selection as always Doug. Not sure I knew of BB Seaton though I recognized the names of his peers. Cool reissues from Studio One, kind of them to replicate the faded covert art. Cheers!

I've long been meaning to upgrade my gear, just been vacillating between laziness, procrastination and periods of not having the funds available. I'm sure the Thorens could be refurbished? Be nice to hang on to that as an heirloom. For the most part I accept that in telling the story of a well known person, certain concessions for dramatic effect have to be made; Bob however means so much to so many that some of the choices in the film have rankled many. I'm in no hurry to see it, don't think I am really the target audience for such a film anyway, it's more about pushing Bob's image and legacy forward to a younger generation, but if I do see it I'll try and keep an open mind. I'm not sure the Studio One sleeves are done out of kindness, I've heard that at least some of them are old stock left over for who knows how long...on some of the totally new compilations they've done they do seem to have preserved that faded look in the sleeve printing however. Cheers, have a nice weekend!

It's a shame that we've lost quite a few artists recently. I have heard of The Gaylords but did not know the B.B. Seaton name. I do have a Skatalites album but it was when they reformed and Jackie Mittoo was not a part of the group. I do have a Heptones compilation. Looks like some cool Studio One releases.
@FatCityVinyl
@FatCityVinyl 9 ай бұрын
The musical losses unfortunately seem to keep coming, just that generation getting older (and even not so old ones like Peetah Morgan). I have very few of the Skatalites releases after they reformed, I should probably correct that one of these days. The Heptones are one of the great Jamaican vocal groups but maybe not as recognized as others - perhaps because they changed lead singers midway through the 70's. Studio One have been putting out some very interesting reissues that would otherwise be quite expensive to find vintage copies of. Thanks for watching, cheers!

Hi, nice seeing you pop up in the feed. though sad to hear Morgan Heritage is minus one, hopefully they have offspring or it wont be much heritage. I recall that Chalawa album from back in my days djing in Oslo. I never had it myself, but a couple of other dj`s I would play with would occasionally spin this, since there was no internet, none would know much more about it than what is on the sleeve... It`S such a fish out of water you can hardly believe it really is what it is.. Really strong album if I remember correctly - The Phase IV cover was new to me, it sounded even less reggae than the Johnny version.

Thank you! Good seeing you here...with such a large family I suspect the Morgan Heritage story is far from over (Gramps' son Jemere has already come out as an artist himself) though it seems inconceivable not to hear the voice of Peetah ever again. The Chalawa one is unusual, seems to have been reasonably well distributed over the years and at least somewhat well known...even came out on CD with a similar album, Uprising In Dub by Delixx (which I think is mostly the same people involved). They have a couple of earlier albums I wouldn't mind having but those are more rare and pricey. Quite like their flavour, reggae with a bit of a rock influence...I really love that Phase IV cover, very obscure and not even on YT so far as I can tell. Cheers!

@Audunforgard 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, Gramps got a fine voice still, and ah, yeah, lets see wht the young uns come up with... I`d also like to get the Blackwell dubs, though controversial, from what I gather, they do sound just out of this world. About Phase IV perhaps if you want some more subscribers, that sounds like the kind of tune that would get you a great many views over the years. @@FatCityVinyl

Hey Doug. I’ve been streaming some Morgan Heritage since your last video - very enjoyable. I’m very happy that the censors didn’t block the Phase IV needle drop, great to hear their take on Redemption song - indeed very hart felt - lovely! And the exodus dub is pretty cool as well. Some great Gay Lads 7 inches (and CDs). So far I’ve resisted getting into 7 inch records. May he live long through his music. I can certainly hear the similarities between No Problem and Cool Runnings! Good spot. Man, I really need to do an order from studio 1! Ahhh, such a cute dog. Our fella is in desperate need of a haircut! Right now he looks like the shaggy dog lol. Thanks again Doug, I’ve come to quite look forward to your videos. All the best.

Nice that you are enjoying Morgan Heritage! Still seems unreal that we will not get to hear Peetah's voice again. They were talking about a new album some months back so there may yet be some music forthcoming. I'm surprised Phase IV didn't even get picked up on the copyright thing - I am really feeling their rendition lately. Just young kids giving it their all, for someone whose music obviously inspired and meant a great deal to them. Don't think you can hear that anywhere else, does not seem to be on YT though the a side, Hard Luck Man, is. Chalawa have a few other records, all are worth hearing but the early ones are kind of expensive and rare. There's also an Uprising Dub version, credited to Delixx but I suspect it is the same guys behind it. Very comparable sound to the Exodus one. Reggae 7" are a bottomless pit! Stay far away lol. Actually some are still very affordable and they are neat to have. But there are thousands upon thousands of them out there, it is truly endless. Couldn't believe that No Problem similarity to Cool Runnings! Not sure if I never noticed it before or just forgot since I last listened to it. Studio One keep coming with the goodies - all those would be much more expensive to try and find used copies of. You gotta keep on top of that hair for sure! Ours gets scruffy pretty fast as well. Woke up yesterday morning and the little twerp had barfed on the couch overnight, good thing he's cute haha. Thanks for tuning in my friend, glad you are enjoying the videos! That's what it's all about and why I keep doing them. Cheers!

They haven't even been selling their latest reissues on their own website, seems to be only in person at their shopfront in Brooklyn or through a select few online sellers. It's the strangest sales strategy! I've been getting them from this guy in California who gets stock direct from Studio One, been dealing with him for many years though he is not cheap (but 100% reliable and professional): @@YoungLPLovers
