Reggie Miller says Dražen Petrović is the best shooter ever, faster release than Steph Curry

NBA Hall of Famer Reggie Miller was known as a fierce trash talker to go along with his sensational shooting and scoring ability during a brilliant 18-year career. The 50-year-old Miller - who currently works as an analyst for the NBA on TNT - joined me on HuffPost Live to discuss LeBron James, the Golden State Warriors and the one player who had a quicker release than Stephen Curry. It might not be who you think either. It's Millers favourite player, the late great Dražen Petrović.

Petrovic was amazing player. Technically and tactically gifted, but his determination and desire to play and win were driving him! Legend! As i grew up with him, still playing in Cibona and later in Real Madrid, the legends about him were already present. The one that inspired me was that each morning, before going to school, he threw 300 free throws every day...Of course this was followed by more shots every day. Bulgaria still remembers Drazen!

Steve Kerr and MJ, both on the Bulls championship teams, have said how frustrating it was to guard Drazen. He wouldn't give up. No matter what happened to him. Kerr was an early three-pt and last minute shooter when 3 pointers werent big unless clutch. You cant tell me that Curry didnt benefit from having a Bulls championship player as his coach. I remember when European plsyers first came into the league. Sarunas and Drazen. They were the start of European basketball players coming into the NBA. Trailblazers, indeed.

Petrovic was a pioneer and a legend to those who followed European basketball since the 80s or early 90s.Petrovic is largely the reason this flood of European players going to the NBA began. Technically speaking, Petrovic was flawless. His basketball IQ was far greater than guys like Clyde Drexler, John Starks, Ron Harper, etc. His work ethic and will to win could be compared only to MJ. But he never got the chance to play with an NBA contender team. Anyway, those who know what Drazen represents for European basketball consider him the best European player to ever play the game and even if other people have or will win more, Drazen is a legend just like MJ.

There is plenty of footage here on YT for those of you calling Draz a Great White Hope etc. Dude was the truth. And by the way, for those looking at just career stats, you have to throw away his time in Portland. He wasn't getting consistent minutes because he was playing behind Clyde Drexler. When he did get in the games he showed flashes but his game flourished in New Jersey. Also in response to another poster, he wasn't a PG although he was very creative and an excellent passer. Kenny Anderson was the PG in NJ although he and Mookie Blaylock may have overlapped. He had the quickest release I've ever seen as well so I agree with Reggie. But certainly Ray Allen and Andrew Toney are in the conversation. In terms of modern day players, the closest comp for him I can think of is actually Klay Thompson. Similar size, build, and skill set. Petro wasn't quite as tall, but has similar proportions. In those days teams didn't shoot as many threes so of course he doesn't have as many in a season as the top guys now. But make no mistake, he was deadly in and he also shot 50 percent or close to it from the field in his last two seasons if I'm not mistaken. I don't have his stats right in front of me. He was just entering his prime when he died tragically. But he gave every other SG in the league the business including Michael Jordan most nights. Plus, he could guard which is another similarity he has with Klay. In today's NBA he would be a problem because he wasn't just a sharpshooter , but a guy who would punish smaller guys on the box. And he loved to beat guys off the bounce. So I agree with Reggie and he should know. But I know too because I saw the man play.

I don't think people realized how different the rules were in the 80s and 90s. Points were scored, but MAN did it take something to actually make a score. Larry Bird's impossible shots, Laimbeer clocking Jordan as he went in for a drive ... hot damn. Some of the things they let happen wouldn't fly these days.

Reggie is so respectful and retrospective. Kudos. Bird, Curry, Petrovic etal....But I have to say, if a shot has to be made from anywhere, you'd have a hard time giving the ball to anyone other than Jordan...it's just he's made like a burned image in my mind of 'clutch'.

Every time I hear his name I get tears up my eyes, he was destined to become one the best players ever to play the game. I watched him as a kid in Europe, later on in the NBA. BTW, Toni Kukoc is the "MJ" of Europe as he dominated everyone there... 6'11" who can create a shot in and out of the 3line, can handle and pass the ball better than most of the pg's. He was instrumental for the success of bulls that time and bailed out MJ and the bulls multiple times with his magic plays.

I’m 37. I stopped watching basketball except for the playoffs in 05. I started watching every game this season and the first thing I noticed was that damn near everybody shoots 3’s all day. Back in the day pretty much only 2 or 3 guys per team could shoot a 3 and that was usually when they were down by 2. There are exceptions of course but todays game is less physical and more shooter oriented. Even the big guys are out there shooting. The times have changed.

What Reggie won't say (because idiots will say he's just hating) is that the rules make it easier for Curry and modern players. Reggie shot more than 500 threes exactly once in his career. Meanwhile, we have a guy like James Harden (who isn't the shooter Reggie was) cranking out 800+ threes on a yearly basis. Reggie would've thrived in this era.

Drazen was just coming into his own and would have been IMO on of the top 20 SG's of all time even now in 2020 if we created a list. Probably closer to !10 than top #20. He was a beast! Could shoot 3's, come off picks and kill it. Jordan couldn't shut him down if Drazen was on. If people gave him space to shoot it was a wrap. Defensively he doesn't compare to Jerry West, Drexler, Kobe, MJ, etc. But Reggie and Ray Allen and D.Wade weren't exactly defensive stalwarts either. Losing Reggie Lewis, (who was one of the best mid-range shooters I've ever seen) and blocked MJ 5 times in 1 game and could drop 20 to 25 on the regular, in the same year as Drazen was just a shocking year for a teenaged fan. Unlike Kobe who died tragically (RIP#2020) Drazen and Reggie had just made All-Star status and getting into their groove which makes it that much sadder for fans and family.

This was back in the good old pre sports package days when we had superstations on cable like WWOR Nets and Mets. WBTS Braves and Hawks. WGN Cubs and Sox plus all the local As, Giants, Kings, 9ers, Raiders games so I watched tons of sports as a youngster. For all the youngsters out there, Draz was a damn good player. Period.
