"All the Rowboats" Lyrics:
All the rowboats
In the paintings
They keep trying to row away
And the captains' worried faces
Stay contorted and staring at the waves
They'll keep hanging
In their gold frames
For forever
Forever and a day
All the rowboats
In the oil paintings
They keep trying to
Row away, row away...
Hear them whispering
French and German, Dutch, Italian and Latin
When no one's looking
I touch a sculpture
Marble, cold and soft as satin
But the most special
Are the most lonely
God I pity the violins
In glass coffins
They keep coughing
They've forgotten
Forgotten how to sing
How to sing
First there's lights out
Then there's lock up
Masterpieces serving maximum sentences
It's their own fault
For being timeless
There's a price to pay
And a consequence
All the galleries
The museums
"Here's your ticket
Welcome to the tombs"
They're just public mausoleums
The living dead fill every room
But the most special
Are the most lonely
God I pity the violins
In glass coffins they keep coughing
They've forgotten
Forgotten how to sing
They will stay there
In their gold frames
For forever, forever and a day
All the rowboats
In the oil paintings
They keep trying to
Row away, row away....
First there's lights out
Then there's lock up
Master pieces serving maximum sentences
It's their own fault
For being timeless
There's a price to pay
And a consequence
All the galleries
The museums
They will stay there
Forever and a day
All the rowboats
In the oil paintings
They keep trying to
Row away, row away...

I cannot identify what emotion this song makes me feel, but there’s definitely a lot of it. Edit: I feel guilty that I’ve gotten a bunch of likes on this comment when I didn’t come up with it. I can’t remember where I stole it from but I definitely stole it. I decided to add this edit to ease my conscience. I’m weird. I don’t even care about likes.

So? She's amazing... We all know this,we don't all need to get all existential, and angst-y to appreciate her. She Is beautiful, can't get around that fact. Doesn't mean we don't appreciate the song. We just love to look and listen at the same time,to bask in the magnificent aura of Her presence. It's a whole gestalt experience with Regina. I suppose,be you male female attack helicopter,or lycanthrope, You only listen to the message huh? It's why we watch videos instead of only listening to the radio. Yes it could be misconstrued as shallow if everything on this thread was purely about her looks. It ain't though is it? We love her; her physical beauty; the beauty of her prose, and the beauty of Her in the whole. I was mainly gonna say how wonderful she looks in casual clothes, but you pissed me off. But damn don't she look swell in a pair of tight pants and a t-shirt!!????

As a writer and the grandchild of two English majors, there is nothing I love more than people interpreting my writing in ways that never even occurred to me. I think it's great that a piece of art can be seen in a hundred different ways by a hundred different people. Everyone looks at art differently. That's the beauty of art.

Sometimes Regina's lyrics are something you have to understand with your soul, not your logic. When I listen to her, I don't break it down and say, "What does this literally mean?" I just let her songs make me feel, and I think that's the sign of a beautiful poet and artist.

I think the message in this song runs deeper than just the way we treat art. I think in this song, she's expressing a regret for our inability to understand it. Many people see a painting, admire it for a few moments, and then move on. She also says, "God, I pity the violins / In the glass coffins, they keep coughin' / They've forgotten, forgotten how to sing, how to sing." As people fail to understand great art, mankind forgets how to create it. "Singing" is a metaphor for the creation of art.

I loVe how this song explores how all ART goes on to have to a life of its own. Whether it’s our own art or others’ , We can so easily get lost in it. This can be helpful and healing or sometimes, detrimental and maddening… it changes us, teaches us, connects us✨ Such a brilliant song♥️🐌♥️

I shared this song with a guy gay friend president of the art association in Pedro. He was insulted 😂. I told him this is such a beautiful song. Did you hear it? He did but never saw me the same. I am an artist as well. Our friendship never recovered. The art work is stuck bc of its timeless beauty!! How doesn't anyone understand 🫢. The end. I still love the message behind the song. 😊

You know, every two-bit pop musician can write a song about love, sex or relationships. There are millions of the like out there with 99% of them meriting little attention. But rare is the popular musician who can compose an compelling, thoughtful, and unique piece commenting upon objectified state of art on display in our modern culture. Regina's such an underrated artist despite being so critically and commercially acclaimed.

In (about) the words of my Theology teacher, calling someone "hot" just makes them into a piece of meat. They're just an object in those terms. We are all people of God, or whatever we believe in if we do, and we should be loved for that, for who we are, not how we are characterized.

that is the sad fate of men, we limit things, we define so that we understand. we create words that limit the eternity of ideas, we name things and define them as if they only have that definition for their meaning, so even beauty which is eternal is captured in a frame, in shape of a scultpure, in a 4 minute music. you know why? because even our bodies limit our eternal soul, we put doors on eternal things before we experience them. it may sound sad but this reality is actually beautiful too, gives us a bit of chaos and thus inspire more emotion, more passion, more art. don't be sad sir, i adore artists! :D

if you just discovered her music, check out her first album, "11:11", it's amazing. especially tracks like sunshine and, well, pretty much everything. it's very bluesy, if you're into that sort of thing. second album was also brilliant. "lounge" had the most whimsical vocal solo.

This is one of my favorite songs, and it’s partly because I can relate to the feeling of not being understood, which is what I think this song is about. I think the line, “the most special, are the most lonely” sums up how I’ve felt most of my life. I’m too different from most people, and that’s not to put myself on some kind of pedestal and say I’m better than anyone else, on the contrary, I believe it makes me worse because it’s painful and lonely not to be understood. It’s a curse. Just like the dusty art in a museum, people will look at it but they may never understand it. I think this song is lamenting the fact that to be different or unique is not the beautiful thing others make it out to be, but a curse. “It’s their own fault, for being timeless, a price to pay and a consequence.” The consequence of wishing to be unique is that nobody will understand you. I’d rather be “plain” and “basic” if it means belonging.

I totally agree with ya. I love this song but haven't heard any other songs like this from her. She's beautiful but most of her jams are not to my liking. At least we got this one. Hopefully she'll pull out some more dark moody and aggressive jams...wishful thinking. lol : )
