LYRICS
I went walking home alone
Past all the bars and corner delis When I heard God call out my name And he said Hey
Let’s grab a beer
It’s awful late
We both right here
And we didn’t even have to pay Cause God is God and he’s revered And I said
Why doesn’t it get better with time I’m becoming all alone again
Stay, stay, stay
Let the ones who want it bad
Get all the things that make them better Let the ones who don’t care feel a thrill And I just want to ride
But this whole world
It makes me carsick
Stop the meter sir
You have a heart
Why don’t you use it
Why doesn’t it get better with time I’m becoming all alone again
Stay, stay, stay
I went walking home alone
past all the bars and corner delis When I asked God
Please call
Call my name
And I said Hey
Let’s grab a beer
It’s awful late
I know you’re here
And we wouldn’t even have to pay Cause You are God and You’re revered
Why doesn’t it get better with time I’m becoming all alone again
Stay, stay, stay
I’m becoming all alone again
Stay, stay, stay

Fun fact about these lines, she's taking inspiration from a very old russian song that she covered in one of the bonus tracks off "What We Saw from the Cheap Seats" called "The Prayer of François Villon (Molitva)." The song's verses ask that God give certain things to certain people. "Господи, дай ты каждому Чего у него нет/Умному дай голову/Трусливому дай коня/Дай счастливому денег/И не забудь про меня "God, give everyone what they don't have/Give the wise one a head/Give the coward a horse/give the happy one money/and don't forget about me" I love how in "The Prayer of François Villon" he's begging to not be forgotten, but here the speaker just wants "to ride." To me, it's a resignation to what she does get given and a trust that the ride will be what it's meant to. It's so beautiful to me to hear her influences coming out in this song. She's taking the art that made her her and spinning it into something all her own. For all my fellow lyric nerds out there I recommend you translate "The Prayer of François Villon" so that you can consider these lyrics through that lense. I feel so grateful to be able to know russian and wanted to share this little easter egg with everyone.

It's incredible, my mom pass away 7 months ago, and my best friend moved away two weeks later looking for better, so now I walk alone a lot and live alone, and just keep wondering why the sadness of mom passing won't heal with time, I walk through the streets with delis and caffes, and think about God a lot, Is like she wrote this song about me ✨🦅❤️🌿

I promise you that you aren’t the only one feeling alone. I don’t know if that makes it better or worse, but it isn’t just you. Hang in there. Try to find things that bring you joy on your own. Shared experiences are wonderful, but if you can’t have them at the moment, have some experiences for yourself. You deserve joy. Hang in there.

That line could be quoted a thousand times and every time, it hits me harder. Another two lines that are so impactful are "And I just want to ride, but this whole world, it makes me carsick. Stop the meter sir, you have a heart, why don't you use it?" From the get go, the title "Becoming all alone again" hits home because that's how it feels, it isn't just becoming alone, but becoming alone again each time.

You’re the reason I made it into music school. You’re the reason I perform. I’m so happy my mamma was able to see you inspire me to be the artist I am today. I’m Maxximo.X on Instagram and I post to your photos sometimes. Thank you for being a light in my life. Thank you for creating and sharing. Is it just me or does this song have a whole new level of poignancy now? Aren't we all just in various stages of becoming all alone again? And, no, it doesn't get easier with time! But music and art can provide moments of relief amidst the pain of loss. Rest in peace Ilya. I hope Regina is finding some of the same comfort and peace she has given to all of us through her art during this time.

😭😭😭 Regina!!! How do you always manage to find the most tender parts of my soul, and lay them out with your signature combo of wit, story-telling, frank sincerity, and depth? Also, being raised on classical music and having played in many orchestras, I love the sweeping grandiose classical vibes. Especially juxtaposed with the simplicity of music during the conversation with God. Sometimes you feel so much, but there's very little to be said. Little words that mean everything, like, "Stay, stay, stay." For me, when I chase down all my emotions to the root, it always seems to wind down to the fact that I just want to be with God, and can rarely get as close as I'd like. Thank you for expressing this so beautifully. ❤️

Thank you. Your songs have been there in my darkest moments. This one hit me deep in the feels since I’ve felt lost for a few years now and kind of drifted off from my basic beliefs. Still fighting to get up everyday. Been thorough a lot of insomnia months and I almost gave up a lot as well. This line: “and I asked God, please call my name”, just made me cry, because I’ve prayed for so long for a silver lining. I love your songs and I’m really grateful for you, you always find the words to express those feelings that I cannot describe. Really, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Heard this for the first time today, while listening to a local college station, that I have fallen in love with about a year ago. I was the first in line at a construction zone, with a gentleman holding a stop sign in front of my car. I am self-employed, and I embrace when an outside source tells me to “stop”. I have no choice therefore, I enjoy it. I lost my mom less than a month ago, and we had a huge music connection. The beauty of this song made me ball my eyes out in front of this person holding a stop sign. I was wishing I got to introduce my mom to this song, but I truly feel as though she was sitting next to me. ❤️💕❤️

Wow! This was exactly what's been on my mind. You always have such a way of writing things beautifully. I especially have been thinking on this part of the song: "Why doesn't it get better with time?" I'm becoming all alone again Stay, stay, stay Let the ones who want it bad Get all the things that make them better Let the ones who don't care feel a thrill And I just want to ride But this whole world It makes me carsick Stop the meter, sir You have a heart Why don't you use it?" It seems like caring in life backfires, and the people who don't care get the good things in life. Being good and choosing the right path comes at a cost. It feels lonely too. I wonder why people don't use their hearts more. Am I the one that's wrong? Am I the one that's different? Anyways you sing it all so beautifully and sadly. Thank you. This is why I love your work. It is healing for my soul and heart. Thank you and take care Regina Spektor

My mom's a nurse and a lot of the times, it feels like I was born on a battlefield; nearly everyday, I watch her go as though I'm sending off a soldier. I love her so much, and she comes home with these 'battle stories' of how different patients or coworkers and families behaved and what she did. I wouldn't change a thing about the way I was raised. She brought that passion to me and I wouldn't give it up for anything, but we're very familiar with that wonder of "why don't people use their hearts more." Thanks Regina, and thank you, for caring

I have been pleading into silent corners, a little prayer, that I need a new Regina Spektor album! Her last was the best and she is so wonderful. This is GREAT news. The little silent corners heard me!
