I love Regina Spektor no matter how "quirky" she gets. Her nonconformity keeps it interesting and she's got a voice beyond belief.

My reaction to the song while reading the lyrics: Start of the song: Wow this is amazing I can't wait to see how the rest of the song goes. Washing dishes part: *is smiling* This is such a cute song! Gulping soap water part: Um I don't think you should do that... Choking noises in the song start: *all happiness that might have been left over before this part is now gone* Oh crap she's dead now isn't she?

This song is an existential masterpiece. Regina Spektor is obviously well read and surely knows Sartre's ideas. The character engages and disengages from the world around her and experiences nausea, which Sartre describes as the consequence of facing one's freedom and the absence of intrinsic meaning of existence.

An INCREDIBLE amount of talent! Her voice is versatile, and she can sing SO well. I am always blown away by her voice. Regina Spektor is who you call a true, genuine singer.

The thing thats wonderful about Regina Spektor songs is you can interpret her songs in a million different ways, whether its simple or deep, which is exactly what Regina has said she wants! To me, I interpret this song as the monotony of life and, when you try to stand outside of the cliches and be independent and crazy, life kicks you in the butt and makes it hard to stand out. Its basically trying to escape the boring repetitiveness of the music box, or boring monotonous life.

Life inside the music box ain't easy The mallets hit, the gears are always turning And everyone inside the mechanism Is yearning To get out And sing another melody completely So different from the one they're always singing I close my eyes and think that I have found me But then I feel mortality surround me I want to sing another melody So different from the one I always sing But when I do the dishes I run the water very, very, very hot And then I fill the sink to the top with bubbles of soap And then I set all the bottle caps I own afloat And it's the greatest voyage in the history of plastic And then I slip my hands in and start to make waves And then I dip my tongue in and take a taste It tastes like soap but it doesn't really taste like soap And then I lower in my whole mouth and take a gulp ...and start to feel mortality sorround me I close my eyes and think that I have found me But life inside a music box ain't easy The mallets hit, the gears are always turning And every one inside the mechanism Is yearning to get out And sing another melody completely Is yearning to get out Is yearning to get out Is yearning to get out...

I think what she is trying to say is that she is stuck inside a music box and a music box always plays the same song, so she tries to play it up a little and takes this "voyage in the sink"-it is her escape and she tries to keep a part of it by 'taking a gulp' and then tries to sing a different melody, but is still singing the same thing only in reverse, like a broken record. My interpretation. Thanks for posting. I love Regina Spektor !
@GrEyPaLaCeBaLLet15 жыл бұрын
yes!! like at the end of musicbox, she tweaks her voice and makes it sound like she's choking. its imperfctly perfect. im glad i finally found someone who truly inderstand what she trying to get across. people lose her message when they pick it apart.
@TheGreatDetectiveKnows9 жыл бұрын
She's comparing her life to a musicbox. She's tired of feeling the way she does. Whether she is depressed, sad, or bored, she keeps feeling this way and no matter how hard she wants to sing a different melody she can't because she's a musicbox, forever destined to sing the same song. She takes pills and as soon as she says she does you feel the entire melody and beat change. She's really upbeat she feels amazing it's a great voyage and then it wears off and you can see the melody revert back to what it was. Just my interpretation, I can relate to this :)

Okay so her "gagging" sound isn't from drinking soap water. Has anyone very very slowly opened or closed a musicbox with a spinning ballerina? It makes this kinda strange sound because the ballerina can't spin quite yet at full speed. She is trying to get out of the musicbox. When I first heard this song in high school I thought the song was about having to fit within societies terms (Inside the music box) but you yearned to get out and just be yourself. In the middle of the song she decided to try popularity out by putting all her bottle caps afloat and take a taste of the popular life. It felt good so she went ahead and took a gulp but it wasn't quite what she was expecting. Some people mention that it is about suicide and this could be right, many people resort to suicide when they don't feel like they fit in anywhere but I feel like the song is more than that. It is about finding out you don't want to be put into a box because it is unfulfilling to you. When she says mortality surrounds her I think she means that staying inside the musicbox and abiding by societies standards is like being dead inside a coffin. This song is about accepting yourself as you are and letting your own song be heard.

For me, the "music box" is her brain. "The malots hit the gears are always turning." means that her mind is constantly racing and she's "yearning to get out" of her thoughts. The whole dishes part is about taking pills, and momentarily having peace of mind. It taste like soap because the pills are "cleansing" her mind, but they soon wear off, and she starts to "feel mortality surround her." That's just my interpretation, anyway.
@jessehinman83405 жыл бұрын
We are all entitled to our own interpretations but this song is more or less literal. the music box is the daily grind we always find ourselves in. The mallets and gears are the bumps and bruises we get day-to-day always turning and striking us as in you have no control over it you just go along with the flow. The yearning to get out is how we are all aware of this rut we put ourselves in but never do anything to change it. The dishes are just that. She's doing the dishes in her home something we all do day-to-day over and over and don't have any way to do so otherwise. That's when she decides to kill herself by drinking the sink full of dishwater. Her interruptions near the end of this song are her choking down on the dishwater as she slowly fades away into death. It was her answer to getting out of the music box aka the daily grind. The Music Box is my favorite song by Regina. Upon beating the ever so welcoming warmth of suicide myself years ago. I really relate to just wanting to end it all. It still beckons to me here and then but I'm fairly confident I'll never return the call.

In my opinion Regina is an excellent singer and outstanding musician. She is able to effectively change keys and styles within a song. Her softer high singing sounds angelic. In general I don't care for her as a song writer or her lyrics. I wish someone would write some good songs for her, because she is a better vocalist than most of the top selling female singers.

Many of her songs seem a little hard to fully understand but she seems one of the most open minded people in music and I think we can see many of the words as records of her own exploration of what is to be human. (Even if in her case its an amzingly talented, creative and loving individual.)

I interpreted this song as just some ordinary day where you suddenly start reflecting on life, but then you distract yourself again with reality (the dishes stuff). Because humans have a very short attention span, and avoiding thinking about our own mortality is a common defense mechanism.
