In 2003 she was in a film I saw at a SF Bay Area film festival (Cinequest - "Winning Girls Through Psychic Mind Control") ... I was blown away by the music and saw her in the credits and found her own website/forum and asked her about the movie where she sang all the vocal parts for another person. She was touched that someone knew of this & she described watching her voice come out of a different person on screen made her feel like Ariel in the Little Mermaid... she was so nice in her reply I bought all her music to date and have been a fan ever since. Too bad that film never came out on video/streaming... :(

She is one of the most underrated musicians in my opinion. I believe she is truly a genius and deserves so much more recognition than she gets. Her piano skills, vocal technique, and her lyrics make for a magical combo. It takes a very talented individual to captivate an audience with their original music and no smokes, mirrors, and costumes. I have seen her live and all she needs is her piano.

I agree. I don't think she's everyone's taste and that's okay - I'm really glad that she's still around, so dedicated to her music, and she hasn't changed a bit since I heard her first back in 2004ish. She has only evolved and improved gracefully. Respekt

She’s truly one of those artists that is better live. The studio recording of Loveology, and finally having it on an official album, is great, but the old live version will always be the version that has my heart. I wish platforms like Spotify supported more live and demo songs. So much of Regina’s catalogue of music isn’t even on an official album. For artists who just shine live, getting to hear them perform without trappings has a magic to it, and the current musical platforms aren’t set up to showcase this. I haven't listened to Regina in years now - not for any real reason, though. I forgot how nostalgic she is. She was the soundtrack of one specific year, 2006, for me. 12 months of her Begin to Hope and Soviet Kitsch albums being played constantly - really any time I listened to any kind of music. And I was 18, just got a new girlfriend, got a new job and went to America on holiday for the first, and only, time. I didn't really have any major responsibilities to deal with and was able to do and go wherever I wanted - and I listened to Regina Spektor. She is the embodiment of nostalgia for me. Makes me feel at home - kinda like finally seeing an old friend again after years of no contact. It's so weird that music can do that, but I love it - and I forgot quite how much I loved Regina and especially those albums. They're so very dear to me. Begin to Hope came out when I was a freshmen in high school, and I was immediately spellbound by Apres Moi. The Russian verse captivated me in a way that is hard to describe, but I felt this need to learn the language. I started taking Russian courses in college, including a study abroad summer before completing a minor in it, and it's all because of Regina Spektor's insane talent. Thank you Regina, your music has had such a strong positive impact on my life.

So cool to hear your story!!! I was also spellbound by Apres Moi! The Russian verse captivated me so much I would listen to it over and over and recite it and write it down in Russian. I literally would listen to her music every day on the way to college, her voice has always been so hypnotic to me and intense and enticing! I was studying Russian at the time and I always dreamed about the day I would become a better Russian language speaker. 11 years later and I’m still loving that song, speaking the language and going to visit the country next month to see my boyfriend there. you almost forget it’s just her and the piano during Apres Moi. there’s so much going on musically, it sounds so full and commanding
@tommasosilvestro2 жыл бұрын
gurl , it's a nice song but no, there's not a lot going on musically - the left hand is going over the same progression of bass notes and the right hand is hitting the same chords over and over again. That's literally it.
@boxofboommike2 жыл бұрын
@@tommasosilvestro I’m not talking about the chord progression, I’m talking about the magic of her overall performance. It has nothing to do with how technically difficult it is to play. if you don’t get that, I’m sorry for you…gurl.
@tommasosilvestro2 жыл бұрын
@@boxofboommike can you not just admit you might have used the wrong words instead of twisting it trying to say that I do not understand it (when I also added that it's a nice song)? It's not a crime you know? You said there's so much going on musically and to that I answered there simply is not much going on musically. Had you mentioned her interpretation and the vibe you're getting from the performance like you then did in reply to my comment, I wouldn't have mentioned chord progressions or anything having to do with the complexity of the music. Simple as.
@transitionaccount60222 жыл бұрын
@@tommasosilvestro gurl, dynamics are definitely part of musicality, they're key in what distinguish gould from schiff and their interpretation of at times predictable arrangements is literally what makes them the musicians they are. Also it's a testament to Regina's musicianship that the same chords can sound so varied and almost driven independently from her. The same three notes on a music box can impress with their musicality if arranged right. Raindrops can have musicality. It's an art form, it's been noticed by however many liked the comment and it's pretty arrogant and pedantic (aside from simply incorrect) to assume the number of chords could define this. Hope these words are specific enough for you
@boxofboommike2 жыл бұрын
@@tommasosilvestro I didn’t use the “wrong words” - I said there is so much going on musically - meaning her performance, her vocal, her piano playing, the lyrics, the songwriting itself. You’re the one who decided to reply to that in a condescending way. The same way it’s condescending to say “there simply is not much going on musically.” Like what is your goal here? To feed your own ego by showing how much you know about music and chord progressions? Congrats.
