In the 90's through early 00's Japanese games released in South Korea (especially in the arcade) were heavily censored on Japanese language content and imagery. Best example I can give is Street Fighter Alpha 3. Load up the ASIA region arcade version and you'll start to notice things right away. There's also the fact that Japanese companies couldn't even release their own games and systems in Korea without going through another company like Samsung (Mega Drive and Saturn for example).

Yeah, I remember visiting my cousins in South Korea in 1987 and being comforted that they have an NES too! Later in life when I discovered the Famicom, I started to wonder "wait, wouldn't they release the Famicom in Korea versus the NES?", and that let me down a huge rabbit hole about how Japanese merchandise was banned in South Korea until like 2000 (and as late as 2006) and therefore Korean companies would skirt around those laws by importing AMERICAN versions. Samsung/Hyundai: _"Yeah is says 'Nintendo' on it, but we're importing it from 'Nintendo of America', which is an American company, not a Japanese one, and therefore it doesn't count against the ban!"_ ROK Gov't: _"Sounds legit."_

Boxer: Dash Straight can hit crouching opponents, has a smoother crouch animation and his Turn Around Punch gains more power for longer charge. Claw: Rolling Crystal Flash MP and HP were adjusted. Sagat; Tiger Uppercut MP and HP versions can knock down grounded oppobents. Dictator: Psycho Crusher hits less against blocking opponents (less chip dmg). Ken: Rear side of Tatsu pushes opponents away and not sucked in (so less dmg). Zangief: Spinning Piledriver dishes out more damage for a 3 hit KO instead of a 4 hit KO. Lastly the 99 second timer clocks down to 00 faster in the Japanese release.

Konami really treated many international releases much worse. Life Force on NES is missing animation on the title screen and the multiple endings were removed, Contra is missing the story and map screens, Castlevania III got a 10 lives code, but was made much harder since you take more damage in the last 3rd of the game plus the safe spot on the cyclops boss was removed not to mention the jumping gremlin sprite and the naked statues in level 9 removed.
@Jayce_Alexander2 жыл бұрын
Yep. Castlevania III also got a wayyy better soundtrack in Japan, but of course that was mostly due to the Famicom hardware being able to handle the VRC6 chip, whereas the NES couldn't. But it's the main reason I always go for the Famicom version when I play the game on my AVS. The Famicom Castlevania 3 soundtrack is incredible.

I don't remember if you mentioned it in the first video like this but Ninja Gaiden III is a good example of a game that was made harder internationally, the famicom version has unlimited continues, passwords and you take less damage. Also Contra has more graphical effects, a pre-stage "cutscene", a Ghost 'n Goblins-style map and a level select code.
@UltraHealthyVideoGameNerd2 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen the first episode but I wouldn't be surprised if you covered Castlevania Bloodlines and Contra Hard Corps there, so I'll mention an obscure one. In the Japanese version of Super Magnetic Neo, there's one surprising difference at the end of stage 2-3. In the US version, you bounce off a platform up over the clouds and then catch another magnetic sphere which takes you straight to the platform. In the Japanese version, you bounce up and catch a swinging sphere, which you have to dismount and bounce off an enemy into order to reach the platform. The thing is, the angle which you have to leave the swinging sphere in order to bounce off the enemy has to be insanely precise. If it's too early you'll just crash into the enemy (one hit deaths), but if it's too late you won't have the momentum to make it to the platform and fall straight to your death. What's even more maddening is that if you want to beat the game in full and collect all the extras, you need to beat each stage within a time quota, and this part being at the end of the stage means you've got one chance or have to do the whole thing over again, as the time quotas are surprisingly strict. Who knows, maybe the changed the time requirements in the US version as well, but in the JP original this stage is torture.

It's weird- toning the difficulty down for the international release seems to have been a trend in the earlier days. I knew of a few cases of that (SMB: The Lost Levels), but didn't know it was widespread. Of course, things flipped around pretty quickly, with the likes of Contra Hard Corps, Rocket Knight Adventures, and Streets of Rage 3 being literally twice as difficult in North America. (And I'm still upset at Wonder Boy in Monster World, which has a completely broken final boss that's almost impossible to beat in the NA release.) EDIT: The Bayou Billy stuff was surprising. Nintendo was always altering skimpy clothing at the time, and I'd also have expected Billy's exclamation to be changed to just "OH!" or similar.
