Nurse Experiment: How Much Water Until the Foley Catheter Goes POP!?

Foley catheters have a predetermined amount of fluid that should be placed in the balloon. This particular Foley is a 5cc balloon.
However, in some cases, nurses have accidentally irrigated/flushed the wrong port of the Foley, adding MORE water to the balloon than it should have had.
How much water can these things actually hold? Let's find out!

It really depends on the sort of foley. We regularly used it as an induction method at our L&D ward. Common pratice was 50cc in the regular (yellow) Foley and 30cc in the latexfree one

In home health we routinely had to overfill the ballon - ours would hold 50ml - or else they leak with some patients. 🤷‍♀️

If you used a larger CC syringe, like a 50 or 60cc and pushed harder I bet you could get it to pop with less.

My grandfather once had a foley balloon pop in his bladder. He needed surgery because of the incident.

I’ve had a foley before and because it wasn’t where the doctor wanted it he just pulled it down. It was extremely painful and I now have scar tissue.

Technically you need an order with sterile water or an order with sterile NS How many ml And how many times per day (qid or as needed) And always best not to break the seal - do it on the port for specimen, clean the port, and put a rubber band, come back and release

Always worth it to inflate and deflate the balloon before you insert on the off chance you managed to pick up a faulty kit

We were taught that filling and refilling can effect the integrity of the balloon. So I guess fill it a bit just to make sure it's working? This video has me thinking it would be just fine, though lol.
