It still boggles my mind that in this day and age we still use these!! Shout out to all the nurses who have cut themselves with these in the past! You are not alone!! 😂😂😂

There's a lot of terrible old practices still used in modern medicine, prescription abbreviations, glass ampules, imperial/apothecary measurements, it's ridiculous how we have modern solutions to these messy old problems but are still making the same old problems

Tip?: I insert the cap of the ampule into the barrel of a syringe with the plunger removed. This makes the cap longer thus it is easier to snap the cap off. It works like a charm specially in smaller ampules. It also prevents the cap from being crushed by my fingers' grip.

I was walking down the street and there was a man ODing on Fentanyl, so badly that his lips were purple. Learning how to open an ampoule properly helped save his life. THANK YOU for showing me how to do it!

Great instruction. Quick thought why in the 21st century are we still doing this package style? Who else thinks it is stupid to have to snap glass to give a med?
@calebmcnevin3 жыл бұрын
I don't know anything, but I imagine for some substances it's critical that they don't leak or get exposed to (too much) air, and this is a way to guarantee that. O-rings and lids fail, glass fails in a very clear way. Also, glass is generally non-reactive, whereas plastic can be reactive to certain substances. I would say the answer to your question of why are we still doing this is that it's still the best solution in some cases
@abhinavdwivedi17563 жыл бұрын
No,its only method not only for medicines but also for various liquid chemicals As the remain safe in glass If a wooden or plastic lid is used it will react with it
@user-po3ii1tl9z2 жыл бұрын
I know, it definitely seems archaic but it's just to prevent the chemical inside the ampule from being exposed to air which may cause it to react. Edit: I also think glass is non-reactive which is why they use it specifically, but I could be wrong.

Who else thinks it’s stupid to call something they have no understanding of “stupid”?
@odahimaable2 жыл бұрын
I agree. In a field where sharpnel safety is paramount it is not acceptable that you should have to break glass by your own hands to give medicine. Even worse that you have to do it multiple times every day

Thank you SO much for this video. I had been sent home with a new migraine med and can give myself a shot, but dang if I wasn't flummoxed by this glass thing when I got home from the pharmacy. Thanks for saving me today.

Thank you! I was given a lifesaving opioid overdose kit with these inside. And I just stared at them. Perplexed and full of mystery. I thought… do I smash it ever so gently? Do I flick it really hard? Am I supposed to bite this? What is this and why! Now I know that the gauze in the kit is not for the patient. It is for me. Thank you again!

Always carry alcohol pads. My nursing teachers tell our cohort to use the folded, *unopened* alcohol pads to break the ampule open instead of the flimsy gauze.

Seems stupid that they don’t score the glass so it breaks clean off instead of all jagged and in pieces
@amber_Forever163 жыл бұрын
Mine aren’t breaking, they’re much smaller 2 ml so since they’re smaller the glass is more condensed making it stronger and the glass is thick, I had to smash it with a hammer and lost half the product 😞
