"That's why we have a Saint Peter and not a Saint Judas." Hit me. I struggle with pure laziness but it's very much based on fear - usually around other people. I watched your video on something else and you mentioned eustress and distress. I think I have learned to treat eustress as distress so I sign up to work because I'm not lazy by nature (i used to be told to slow down and not work so hard in simpler times) but then when it comes time to self-motivate (not a problem when part of a team) I freeze and avoid. It will be the spiritual death of me if I don't break free of it.

There are also biological reasons for executive dysfunction, trouble activating and with transitions. For example low blood flow to the prefrontal cortex, low dopamine, and more. Clinical ADHD is one explanation for such challenges (it’s a far more complicated condition than widely thought- doesn’t mean lack of focus but difficulty regulating focus and with executive function).

You may want to check out the TED talk Failing at Normal: An ADHD Success Story by Jessica McCabe. Jesus knows your effort and intention, He told St Faustina that he values these and not the outcome. He knows your struggle and the explanation and doesn’t judge as the world judges. If you talk to someone I recommend an ADHD specialist so that they can rule it in or out. If you’re in the states, CHADD is a good resource.

This is really important to me. Thank you. I spent my childhood in an obsessive and extremely unhealthy regret and self hatred over my choices, my rampant imperfections, and my early addiction to pornography. It got the point where I was suicidal and physically ill, but no one knew for nine years. I remember when I was 8 years old, standing in the shower, thinking that I should burn in hell for seeing something impure. I think I have trauma I haven't addressed yet from my childhood. It felt like there was no way out and I felt like Judas after betraying Christ. It was really complicated. It's been one hell of a fight and the only reason I never ended it is because God reached out to me in miraculous ways. He was the only one. I never deserved God's mercy, I even became atheist to ignore him. My hatred for God and myself only grew more and more the more I ignored him. It felt like I was rotting away. Now I've embraced truth and the delusions are gone. I'm becoming sober quite fast and feeling hopeful in my heart. I've never been so focused and clear headed about salvation. I realized that loving God would be in what I did, not how I felt. That was probably was the turning points really. I realized I could mend that relationship with him by living for him and by his words. The more I realize how beautiful God and his creation is, the more I want to repent for the damage I've done. I'm preparing to receive the sacraments for the first legitimate time in my life. Pray for me and Praise God!

Huh! This made me think. I'm a disabled veteran who looks a little ragged--eye patch, cane, etc. I sometimes wear a t-shirt with a pirate kitty saying "I regret nothing!" (when the kitty, like me, looks like it should have some definite regrets). Besides making people laugh, I hope it says "don't be uncomfortable, I'm very happy to have done the things that left me a little worse for the wear." Now I worry it might instead convey some of the arrogance Fr. Mike warns about. Might have to re-think wardrobe. 🤔 Love the pirate kitty, but love Fr. Mike's advice even more and want to be a good CATholic more than anything!!! 😻😻😻

Sometimes the worst regrets are the things we said no to, when God was saying yes... The things that we thought we were unworthy of, the things that we took for granted. The things that we pushed away, not because we were afraid of change, or uncertainty, or instability. Those are excuses disguised as reasons... The truth is, we were afraid to embrace these divine gifts of happiness that came into our life because to experience that kind of joy, that kind of love, that kind of intimacy, is what it means to experience God... But God does not give up on us... He waits patiently for us to realize the mistakes we made out of fear. Then once we surrender our heart, he restores its brokenness, filling all the cracks with a special adhesive called, a second chance. He knights us, in his name. He makes us brave. He lights up our soul. He sets it on fire. He shows us that we are not just dust from the earth, but that we are made in his image and likeness... Then he hands us a sword, to slay that dragon of Pride, that dragon of Fear, that dragon of Excuses. That dragon of old... Because love never stops reaching... Because God never stops reaching. Because love conquers all. Because love doesn't procrastinate. Love takes us to our destiny. Love shows us: "Act, and God will act. Work and HE will work," - St. Joan of Arc

This is so true, a lot of my worst regrets are the things I said no too, I have lost so much this way, and find it difficult to move forward and move on, realising that all those things and people I said no to or pushed away were definitely from God, even though I knew it at the time underneath, hurts deeply and stops me moving forward, thankyou for these kind wonderful words and reminder that Jesus can give you a second chance, much needed today🕊️🙏

I pray you will seek and find help for your inability to forgive yourself. See a priest. Once you confess, God always forgives. Making a mistake, (accepting the invitation) was not a sin, the assault was the sin. Learn from the mistake and ask God for discernment regarding your future. Dwelling on one 10 year old mistake is a work of satan, don’t yield to him. Trust God and ask Him for healing. I will add you to my daily healing rosary. My heart aches for you.

It was not your fault as in you didn't know you would be abused. Even if you knew, it's okay people make mistakes. I hope you forgive yourself and also forgive the abuser. It can be hard, do pray to God to help you too. I am often trapped in the past. I regret my past mistakes from 10 years ago. I understand I was a teenager but I feel how I disappointed myself and my parents. I understand now that if I had made different choices I would be somewhere else entirely. I often wonder if I have true contrition of certain things. I think I am more concerned that I was foolish enough to get caught or suffer the consequences of my sins. There are a few sins that I deeply regret because I hurt others carelessly or intentionally. I often wish I treated people from my past differently. Humility is difficult and so is accepting your transgressions.

I totally agree. You have a good understanding of words. Regret is wishing you hadn't done it. It is basically useless unless there is acknowledgement. Repentance is the feeling of acknowledging that what you did is wrong or incorrect. Returning is a decision to stop the sin along with a heartfelt feeling of repentance. The feeling is necessary for the return to be sincere and lasting. In fact, it is through the feeling of repentance, felt repeatedly to full resolution, that God removes the condemnation. What do you think about repenting for another? I am not saying that God is going to forgive a person I repent for, but I feel that it is very healing for me to repent, for example, for my enemies, especially, those who have hurt me, repenting for the very action that hurt me, or repenting for the sins of my family or my nation. It is healing for my stomach! Even repenting for things that are not particularly sins is very helpful because it causes understanding of the issue in greater depth, to the point where you know whether what you repent for is really wrong or not, thus reducing unnecessary guilt, indecision and confusion.

This was helpful Father. Thank you so much. I don't know if you will read this but if you do, could you please say a prayer for me? I had a wonderful elderly priest in my life who I stopped visiting regularly and when we talk, I could hear sadness in his voice. I had opportunities to visit, I could've helped take him to doc appointments but instead, I was selfish and lived my life for me. He went away to Europe for a family visit that turned in to his staying there permanently to live out the rest of his life, which means that I will never see him in person again. I will never hug him again. He has no WiFi at this time, so I cannot reach him. I have his mailing address, so I'm sending him a letter telling him that I love him. I also asked his forgiveness for my neglecting him. There's so much more but I've written enough. My heart is broken, but the good thing about it is, that it's very humbling. I am going to be very careful in the future to make time for people I love and reach out to them in their suffering.
