I have two. 1983, and 1984. Both being worked on but running. They were dogged out by some guys who used them for 4 wheeling and sold them to a guy who would fix them up as his business and would flip them (Subaru’s). He decided to retire and sold them to an exotic and antique collection car dealer who didn’t know what to do with them and put them up for sale on the internet. I saw them and was actually looking for a VW Westy as a project, but thought to myself that I should jump on these two babies. I made an offer and got both plus a ton of parts, enough for three Brats, including a full extra engine! I don’t know how long we’re going to keep them but we’re going to enjoy taking them to car and truck shows. Every where we go people want to talk about them and take pictures, especially Subaru fans. I was told that there were 7 registered in Florida, now there are 9!

My granddad worked in the oil fields as a pumper in this “truck”, he loved it. Got better gas mileage than a big truck and was just big enough. Plus, oil field trucks only last 3 years anyway

I went to college in Edinboro in the 2010s, and when you had to register for a parking permit, there was a drop down list that you picked your car model from. In 2018, the Subaru BRAT was an option in the model drop down, and Subaru Crostrek *wasn't* in the drop down. For some reason.

I was still a mechanic when Subaru stopped production of these. Here in Britain, they weren't called the Brat, and i can't remember what they were called here, other than the Subaru 4x4 pick-up. They were just sold as utility vehicles here, as the two rear seats weren't an option, obviously due to safety issues. But farmers especially loved these things, being 4x4 and just big enough to chuck a few straw bales or a sheep or two in the back. As the garage i was working in, at the time, was in a pretty rural area, we used to get many of the local farmers bringing theirs in for MOT's and services, most of the time covered in mud and various types of animal shit too, lovely! But, they all loved these things so much, as there was nothing else like it, that when Subaru announced they were to stop production, many of these guy went out and bought 2-3 brand new ones, and kept them under wraps in one of their barns. They'd just drive these things into the ground, then park them up, once thoroughly knackered, then unwrap a new one. It kinda made sense, as they were so versatile, compact and a fraction of the price of a new Land Rover.

I always enjoy your reviews. Interesting insight, lots of extreme close up shots, and great comedy. I owned one of these Brats - purchased new in 1982. It had single headlight on each side plus a third hidden headlight behind the center badge. It was a VERY expensive car for the day - over $9000, when you could get a new Toyota truck for just over $5000. It was nosey, slow, and could get squirrely if you stomped on the brakes, but I always love the looks of it and it was a great car. The seat belts in the back were standard, and it was legal to ride back there at the time (even at fwy speeds), and they had head rest you could adjust to prevent you from bashing your head against the roof. I had it for 9 years until.I traded it away for some other quirky car (1991 Mercury "Crap pre"). Anyways, thanks again for the memories of the Brat.

I was nine when my mom bought a new Brat in '80. I loved riding in the rear seats back then. Yes, those are factory seatbelts. The fun ended when my mom took the rear seats out so she could haul more compost or whatever. I've heard that there were lawsuits against Subaru from ppl who were injured while riding in the rock-hard rear seats while off-roading. Duh!

I had 1 of these as a field beater when i was 13. Everything he said was correct. Crap parts put together really well. But in saying that... a polished turd is still shit.

My grandparents had a Brat in the early 80's when I was a kid. And yes, riding in the back seats was as fun as it gets.

My uncle had one. Those rear facing seats made it a T-47 Airspeeder, complete with towing cable launcher controls. The first legit Subaru was the GL-10. I learned to drive in a GL-10 wagon, plus A E S T H E T I C, thank you very much.
