BMW 740il: The official car of "making a few phone calls to sort this out."
In 1998, BMW's luxury cars were not trying to be "sporty" as so many big German cars do today. If you drive a 740, you are driving a stock portfolio that had buried more workers than the Hoover Dam.

I had a 1991 BMW 750i for a bit while overseas. The V12 model. It had heated seats too. IN ALL THE SEATS. Front and back. In 1991. That car was a beautiful monster. Pretty fun around the 'ring, too. All was well until the transmission ate its own face.

Suffice it to say that things were a bit tumultuous back then. My grandfather on my mom side was a master tool smith and had 10 siblings most of whom died very young. My grandmother lost her first child died to polio (the vaccine wasn't widely available in Germany in the years following the war) which deeply affected her. My mom helped her mother raise her younger brother. She knew the meaning of the word responsibility and kindness. This is kind of on the money. Watch the movie "The Game" from 1997 with Michael Douglas. He drove a black 740il in it. I'm a small business owner and the business I'm in involves somewhat of an esoteric group. It's a totally legitimate business and no illegal activity is implied. I worked for a competitor in the summer of 2000. He was just a gentle voice on the phone and I mainly took orders from his wife. She drove a Lexus RX. One of those nights when it was overcast in late August/early September when the Sun sets a bit earlier as fall approaches, I noticed a black 750iL slow down near the site where I was working and it really struck me as imposing! My cell phone rings and it was the guy I worked for. I walked on up and met him in person for the first time. He was a rather nice guy…but that car could haunt your dreams!

BMW never had V-12 badges on their cars during this period - I don't think ever. The starter motor in one scene was a V-12 turbine sound - very distinct to only 12s. No footage on youtube strangely - but I do have the film. It did not have cross-spoke wheels like the 740s had - they were chromed-out turbines. Chroming was big in CA from `87 on in films. The car was bedadged in the film.

Holy shit, that steering wheel at the end reminds me of the steering on my 1997 Chevrolet Silverado. I used to love doing 85-90 mph on the toll road and show whatever friend was in the passenger seat at the time that little trick. Kinda scary to think you have so little fine control at 90 mph but can keep going straight as an arrow and just spin the wheel back and forth like that. I say "used to" because I "fixed" it by replacing the ball joints, the upper and lower control arm bushings, inner and outer tie rods, pitman arm, idler arm and idler arm bracket and then adjusted that little set screw on top of the steering gearbox because I can't afford to replace that damn thing.

@MrRandomcommentguy

actually it WILL go wrong, and often. All old BMW's need a ton of maintenance and frequent repair, especially models that are packed with electronics like the 5 and 7 series. They also tend to develop a lot of oil leaks and other issues. The cooling system is a particular weak spot for BMW's, especially the water pumps. That's why they're so cheap when they get to this age. You'd have to be out of your mind to buy one. Or have a lot of disposable income to spend on a car that is basically worthless.

Simon Coles Dude... please shut the hell up and learn how to use a wrench. You've clearly never owned any of these cars. It's a 10-20 year old luxury car, it will NOT be a car you can just neglect and drive, it will get even with you. I've had one of the 7 series and a 5 series. They're not terrible to work on. If your poor as hell, stay away. They're much more fun to own then the depreciated Kia Souls that Americans like to finance on a 6 year car note that's for sure. My 528i is at 202,000 miles and runs like a new car, not even a single rattle, seriously, pick up a wrench or stay the hell away so the big boys can play with them. That's experienced advice from someone who's dealt with these cars often.

wait hold on, did that guy go to a DEALER to get his stuff fixed? good god, tell him to do the work and source the parts himself, and go on the e38 forums, that car has been DISSECTED, just like the e46 and e39, and they know how to fix allllll its problems easily
@Strahan740i
@Strahan740i 10 жыл бұрын
My E38 circumstances are rather similar to the video, price wise. I paid $8100 for a 2000 740i Sport four years ago then put $19k into it. Well, $14k to be fair since I shouldn't count non-maintenance modding. I cannot speak to this guy's reasoning but in my case while I know there are great resources for DIY, I have no space to work on my car and honestly, I'd rather not deal with the hassle. Screw the "stealership" though, I take it to a good indy for maintenance.
@Ryukachoo
@Ryukachoo 10 жыл бұрын
Strahan740i bah, the 7 series forums could have given you pictorials to do everything on that car yourself for zero labor cost (the parts are expensive, but the labor usually kills ya) the succeeding generation 7-series had even more problems and people have totally dissected that thing to the point of reprogramming the ECUs for fun

Ryukachoo Yes, they do have great write ups, but that's irrelevant. As I said, not everyone has a place to do these things. I've no garage and no off street parking. I do not really want to do the timing chain guides along side the road heh,
@lsevent
@lsevent 10 жыл бұрын
If he had the money, I would think he'd get something newer... He's just throwing money at people cause he lacks know-how, tools, space and whatever other excuses people like to throw out. IMHO, paying some guy who gives two shits about your car a premium to work on said car for routine maintenance and even some not so routine issues is a waste of time and money. Almost nothing you do to your car will take more than a couple hours or cost you more than a few hundred dollars in parts and tools. Also, yes you can get more than the luxury found in this car (sans rear leg room, meh...) in a newer car under warranty for around 30k. There are optioned VAG cars out there, just have to look. 4 years or 50k miles (whichever comes first) for Audi warranties at least.

***** 1. European cars are only reliable when you rigorously maintain them. 2. All I did was make a simple comment about side mirrors, you need to chill out.
@dregenius
@dregenius 10 жыл бұрын
TyranitarComedian Most of what you said I think is true, but saying that the engine breaks if you let the timing chain get loose is silly… what engine wouldn't? More specifically, what smooth, high-performance engine? Sure, there are a few non-interference engines still around but they're generally pretty boring engines. Heck, the Japanese are well known for building interference engines with timing *belts*, which in my opinion is a bad idea. I wish more manufacturers would stop trying to save $50 per car and just do like BMW and chain-time all their engines. Also, who would want to use cheap oil? Use a good group IV PAO synthetic and you can run 3 times as long on it, thus saving you money over cheap oil!

Many people don't have the ability to work on their own cars. As a college student, the only two tools I own are a hammer and a hot glue gun. I live in an apartment, so I don't even have space to work on the car even if I did have the appropriate tools. Besides, BMW's are some of the most time-intensive cars to work on, especially for seemingly simple tasks. For example, my old E46 needed the heater core to be flushed. Because it was a BMW, the ENTIRE dashboard had to be removed just to gain access. I sold the car instead of getting it repaired.

To me, this generation of 7 Series will always be the car Frank Martin drove in the first Transporter and James Bond drove in Tomorrow never Dies! In general, I also wanted to say thanks for the nostalgia in your videos. My Grandparents had a pewter 97 Lumina when I was a kid and grandma would pick me up from school in grade 5 and take me home for lunch, she'd buy me one of those big slices of pizza from Pizza Pizza or fish and chips. My uncle and his first wife had a early 90's red Fiesta and black mid 90's Geo Metro hatch. I also love your philosophy and nostalgia about remembering when you were young and the memories you hold onto and can appreciate now.

The great thing about these 740i's is that you can buy a good one for less than $4000 nowadays. Maintenance can be very cheap if you do it yourself. I had a 1995 750il that I bought for $1500, and aside from some electrical issues it was pretty solid mechanically. It had heated seats front and back, adjustable lumbar support on all seats, the rear seats reclined, and there was leather on literally every surface. Leather on the dash, leather on the door cards, leather on the center console, and leather on the armrests. These cars look amazing with style 37 wheels (aka M-Pars) while they look old and lame with the stock wheels.

thats good to hear,I was starting to lose hope on owning one of these cars, I keep hearing that they arent relaible and not a good daily driver
@DannyZabolotny
@DannyZabolotny 8 жыл бұрын
I daily drove a 750il for a while, and those are far more complicated. My daily driver right now is a 2000 540i Touring which has the same engine as a 740il, and it's been great. If you maintain these cars properly they'll be quite reliable.

My father is looking at buying a 1997 740il for $3800. We drove in it and it was super nice. The interior was a little rough with the plastic panels falling off of the sides of the front seats. Also the electronic headrest in the back left seat was making clicking noises for a while. (apparently the electric motor is screwed). Car has 160,000 kilometres (99,000 miles). The owner is a businessman who kept up with regular dealer maintenance apparently. Any suggestions?

Prettiest post circlular headlight BMW for sure. Someday when I feel comfortable not having a car with either no warranty or that isn't as unreliable as this, I will get one of these as a second car, It just looks beautiful and is just a damn comfy car, my Grandpa had one when I was younger and it was awesome. Such an awesome car, also it was the star of the movie The Game and I loved and still kinda like that movie and I love this car in that movie.

So, does the owner of this car even notice that the off-shade color on the left side indicates that it has been in an accident of some kind? As treacherous as a used 7 series is, it's even worse if it was hit. Would I buy this one? I've got a whole bag full of NOPE.

I don't own the Audi anymore, but the work I did do gave me this opinion: Although servicing the car may have more steps and more special tools, you get the idea that the engineers designed the car to be serviced. With domestic cars I've owned, I spend most of my time trying not to break all of the little plastic clips that hold most of the parts on the car.

most likely this difference is the result of a partial pain job after the original paint had faded because of the sun/weather. This is common also as a result of non genuine paint brands or simply bad mixing.. trust me I've had an e38 that I smashed and re-paioted on multiple occasions. :)

I know a guy who had one. Over here it had an actual TV and navigation system combined in the dash (antenna sandwiched in the roof somehow) and dual car phones (one in front, one in back armrest) running from the same SIM card. This WAS ALL factory built..... now he has a more recent 750iL. The guys a software millionaire.

The E38 is one of the best looking and timelessly designed large sedans ever. Fantastic to drive as well, I got to drive a 2001 740i from time to time and it handled spectacularly for a car its size. Thankfully it wasn’t with the extended wheel base. Imola Red with the M wheels and sport package, I wish I could find an example just like that now.
