At some point in the late 1990s, the auto industry decided that everything must be a minivan. Especially in Europe and Japan. And I remember that "minivan everything" era. Minivan family hatchbacks, minivan mini cars, subcompacts, they even tried to make minivan luxury cars and minivan sport coupes. But guess what - customers also care how the cars look and drive. Well, mostly look, because many won't recognize driving experience even if they get smacked in the face with it. But still, for many, getting a minivan means your life is pretty much over, just turning into miserable existence filled with soiled diapers and sleeping next to the disgusting snoring behemoth of a wife. So even Jeremy Clarkson couldn't help the minivan image. But the auto industry looked at all the unsold abominations filling their lots and came with the perfect solution. Why not take those desperately uncool white boxes on tiny wheels, lift them, put bigger wheels and some unpainted plastics, call them SUVs and voila - we can mark up the prices and sell them to cool bicycle dads and yoga moms for all their sport utility needs. And the crossover SUV was born.

More people should drive minivans. The idea that people buy 3 row SUV's instead of one of these is insane. The lengths they will deal with inconvenience to avoid driving one of the most utilitarian vehicles shows how the cultural zeitgeist is often more important than actually building the objectively best solution to a use case.

Ha, yep. It’s a funny bit of social psychology. A third row crossover is the closest thing to a minivan; yet trimming away much of a van’s versatility and utility. Many, if not most crossovers, are really just van replacements. The cosplay of an adventurous lifestyle is way more appealing.

Friend of mine had a Toyota Tarago (Previa 1st Gen) from around 2000 and it was a remarkably good car when you have 2 adults, 3-4kids. It just all fits, otherwise you have to go full-size SUV now and no one should ever have to go full SUV on anything. The nicest thing apart from space for all the luggage and people was that they were well set out mechanically, easy to service, generally really robust, safe comfortable. The other slightly less well known fact is that Toyota vans seem to hold a lot of value, even the HIACE ones for trades and courier work really didn't drop very far down even with half a million km's on them because once they got a bit tired, people would buy them and recondition them as campers off to go do another 4-500k on the clock

The engine vibrates like Michael J Fox because the motor mounts are shot and the automatic sliding doors only close properly if the temp is above 40, but who cares, it cost less than most used golf carts. Another thought on what these vans are “trying to say”… “You can fit your family and their junk in here and drive places affordably” That’s it. That’s all it was meant to be. They church’ed it up a little so the drive isn’t totally soul sucking, but the core principle is in being a reliable(TM), “efficient” family hauler with tons of cargo space for road trips and enough basic conveniences to check the important boxes. If you want to see just how boring, soulless and bland these vans can be, drive one of the 2008-2010 pre-facelift versions. Ugly outside, uglier inside, slow, sloppy, absolutely no redeeming qualities beyond reliability and cargo space. The 2011 refresh was indeed an improvement. SUV’s suck for families. Less cargo space, harder to get in and out of for the kids… minivans survived the SUV era and may wind up taking them over because of how much more practical they are. Also… Caravans and Town and Countries are EVERYWHERE here in Michigan. I see several everywhere I go. Not sure where they’re all hiding in PA.

My dad was a field-service guy.. so the back was always filled with tools and supplies. On weekends, you fold the seats flat and go get some plywood from Home Depot for a DIY project. I'd rather have a minivan in my fleet than a modern oversized (under-bedded) pickup.

If you've got 3-4 people on a long road trip there's nothing better than a van - fold down/take out the middle seat, load in the cooler and the junk food, stretch out, and set sail. I had a minivan in college and it was a tremendous highway cruiser, just ate up the miles. Fuel economy wasn't great but it wasn't terrible either. Really the only thing I truly hated about driving it was trying to parallel park it on city streets, which was not unlike bringing a container ship into dock.

I had a 2013 Grand Caravan. Basically the same van, minus the leather and a few "nice" bits and bobs. My ex got it in the divorce several years ago... My kids told me recently that it died. She traded it for a Ford Maverick. Not a bad trade all things considered, but still, it had less than 90k miles when I gave it up. The transmission threw a tantrum a few months before the divorce, causing a P0868, but I did a filter and fluid change which seemed to quell it. Then divorce. So I bought a 2008 Sienna with 230k miles. It's got almost 270k now, and I still feel like I upgraded. The 62TE is absolute hot garbage. Here's my re-review that no one will read. The Roman: love you, keep up the fantastic work! My parents had an 08 and I have put ~40k miles on my 2016 Pacifica (same-ish van). Rome's right about 90% of what he said, especially about the throttle lag, transmission, and pointless/crappy tech. He's wrong about... well, not wrong, just missing: this van isn't fast, but why would you think it should be? The Journey 4cyl is painfully slow, these Chryslers are perfectly acceptable for the job they do. Sure, it's not for fun and it isn't, but stuff is the story of people, and this car really isn't that bad for that. Consider this perspective. I also have ~40k on my Honda Element. And this car is better than an Element in 70% of categories. HOLD ON AND HEAR ME OUT!!! This has more power/weight, more grip, better fuel economy, similar brakes, and WAY more cargo space. Now, it's not available in 5speed like my Toaster, and my Toaster is shockingly well balanced (the rear will definitely swing out without much effort). It's also not available AWD but the E is not a great offroader anyway. BUT the E can't hold a 4x8 sheet of plywood flat on the floor. It can't sit 7. It can't get 30mpg hwy (I've done 34 in the Pacifica). To be fair, my Honda has over 200k and it needs work but it's still perfectly alive. My Pacifica needed a new CV joint by 16k and new brakes by 35k. So what would I buy? The Honda. But that van is far from worthless and provided me with the ability to haul lumber and furniture in ways even the great Honda Element couldn't.

The stow and go seats are ridiculously uncomfortable, the throttle acts like it's hooked up to the pedal with a rubber band, and it handles like garbage. Is fairly reliable though, apart from when the flex plate grenaded. I much prefer my 2004 Sienna (which was bought new by my dad and given to me when I moved out....the minivan cycle)

Last month we had a rental late-model Chrystler minivan (what is it called today? Pacifica maybe? Hard to care) from the airport. It had all of these flashing dash lights and beeping and buzzing. Look out! Jupiter is rising! Someone is crossing the street a few blocks away! It was _crazy_! Maybe this older T&C wasn't as bad, but don't apologize because they'll just be encouraged to go further into la la land. The point of safety tech is NOT to distract you or break your concentration. And I could not turn it off. Got some message about nanny locks so I guess the rental company has to give permission for drivers with the particular key fob to do this. Ugh!!

Have a 2015 t&c 128000 on the clock. Trans at 118000. Struts shocks and front wheel bearings at 104000 miles. Still has the original spark plugs. Runs like a Swiss watch. All repairs were done under my MVP warranty. The rule with these vehicles is MAINTENANCE! 5k for oil change using 5w30 and trans fluid at 60k NOT 120000 per manual. Take care of it, it will take care of you.

The only serious flaw on these 2011+ vans (if my memory serves me right) is the transmissions. The 3.6 Pentastar has been known as a pretty reliable engine overall, as long as you change the oil every once and a while. I've seen a bunch of these 3.6 engines at 200k+ miles. I don't have any personal experience with these vans but ive heard of premature transmission failure...other than that, they're pretty solid. Great video as always.

My dad has had several of these as vans to work out of and I’ve had a few myself. They all make it well over 200k with no major issues. My last one was a 2010 Grand Caravan that I sold with over 386,000 miles on it. It’s still on the road with just routine maintenance. They’re painfully boring, but at least they’re roomy and dependable

When Dodge stopped making their version a year after the Town & Country stopped, and started pushing the Voyager, people lost their minds and DEMANDED that the Grand Caravan come back, and so it did - and did better than even the Sienna/Odyssey, up to 2019. I might have to pick one of these up - surprised the 8TE didn't make it into this vehicle.

We had a 2007 Chrysler Town & Country Touring Edition, we miss it. It was a little hard for my short mom to get into, but she just packed a step stool. She really misses that shifter on the Dash, She said she felt like she was driving a boat lol. The dual DVD players and built in Power Inverter in the back were nice. And it had hookups so we could connect game systems to the Passenger DVD screen. Also all the back seats being fold flat was nice. Sadly we had to sell it to a junkyard because it developed a coolent leak we just could not find and then melted Cylindar 5. Couldn't source another engine for it, so it sat in our driveway for 2 years until the landlord got on our case.

What’s up with the 08-2010 Chrysler Town & Country Limited with the 4.0, or the 11-16 chrysler t/c limited-s models, dodge caravan gt? It feels like you skipped over generations without really comparing the two. This van is the base model, not loaded with extras, but it’s still a solid commuter. Personally, I wouldn’t go for it compared to the higher trims available now, though. The higher trims come with features like heated seats (front and rear), side door shades, heated steering wheel, DVD/Blu-ray player, and Bluetooth streaming. I’ve used this van for some serious stuff-moving my house with just three trips and driving from Michigan to Texas and back-and it’s held up well, as long as you stay on top of maintenance. If you keep it maintained, it’s a reliable vehicle. The 4.0 engine has 300 lb-ft of torque, which is solid. The newer models aren’t as impressive, but the original 2008-2010 models are actually a pretty good option. Around here, a lot of people use them as transport vans, and I still see at least five in every neighborhood, so they’re still very much relevant. Had a situation where FedEx messed up an important wedding shipment with 20 boxes from Michigan to Kansas, but my Chrysler got the job done without issue. Gas mileage wasn’t bad either-I got around 27 mpg on the highway and 400 miles per tank. I’ve been around several early 5th-gen vans, and none of them had any crazy problems. I’ve been following this channel for years and have enjoyed many of the episodes, but calling the base model “trash” without a proper comparison doesn’t seem like a fair review or evaluation.

I have a 2014 Town and Country with the bigger brakes and wheels. I also have a 2012 Grand Caravan with the smaller brakes and wheels, comparable to the van in this video. Aside from being a cheaply built product made with cheap materials, I find it peppy enough to not make driving a miserable experience, it doesn’t look offensively ugly, it’s comfortable, it doesn’t have a bunch of nanny features or cylinder deactivation nonsense, and the Stow N Go feature alone would make this thing dominate the market if only the van itself were built a little better. I like it because it’s not super over-engineered, parts are cheap, labor isn’t unreasonable, and I can do most repair jobs in my driveway. With brand new brakes, tires and shocks all around, it drives quite good. Stiff enough to give you some road feel, soft enough to be comfortable. It goes through front brakes and front tires faster than your average car, and the 2012 even faster than that, but that’s common on minivans from what I understand. It’s the last of the regular cars. In 2017, they released the Pacifica which has standard automatic emergency braking and stop/start and a host of other super expensive features while also managing to be less reliable. If you’re a mechanic or you have a close mechanic friend, I’d recommend these vans to ANY of you with two or more kids. The conveniences outweigh the uncoolness. Both of mine have been reliable, but it’s a bit of a crapshoot. Pay more for a Honda which also has its problems this generation, or pay a lot more for a Toyota to have peace of mind (but may be the most soulless, boring minivan ever made - if you think THIS is “regular”, drive a Sienna)… or get a lower your standards just a bit, roll the dice, get Town and Country and absolutely love it (until the trans dies because you used the self destruct button labeled as “ECON”).

Had the same thing - Grand Caravan - for a company vehicle in 2012. Pretty quick with the V6, decent fuel economy and practical as heII. It does what its supposed to do - carry people and things. 90% of crossover/SUV operations should be driving these, but they instead prefer the same footprint with 25% less interior capacity and 25% worse fuel economy. Long live the minivan.

We have a Dodge Caravan of this generation as a company car, and while it hauls people and several totes of gear and such to client sites and back perfectly fine, THERE ARE NO CONTINUOUS LINES BETWEEN DOOR AND DASHBOARD. It's like they designed the two completely in isolation, they fit, and they called it good. I can't think of another car I've been in where so little effort has been put into that element of interior styling. Sitting in the passenger seat and staring at the base of the mirror and wondering why the door doesn't "connect" with the dashboard for three hours while a sales rep tries to make small talk with you because you lost all the familiar radio stations 60 miles back and turned it off after no one could find something that everyone likes makes you actually *want* to be back in the office.

Counterpoint: The Town & Country does exactly what it's supposed to do and very little else. Out of all the options available in the '10s, this had the most utility for the money by a landslide. The stow and go seats are a godsend when you need to haul stuff and don't have a truck (especially if it's raining), the tech is pre-bluetooth/HDMI so it all "just works", not to mention no other manufacturer got it right in that era either, and it was EVERYWHERE so issues are known and parts are easy to find. The interior isn't so fancy that you feel bad beating it up by using it for its intended purpose (hauling kids, mostly), and it cleans up easily to boot. Yes, there are problems: the throttle response is slow (though I bet you had eco mode on), and if you stomp on the gas, you have to beware the torque oversteer. It has a tendency to wear out its parts, probably due to the aforementioned abuse you don't feel guilty of. I doesn't have a defined style or personality, but who cares! It's a cheap (nowadays), reliable, maintainable minivan! Again, compare it to an Odyssey, Sedona, Sierra, etc. of the same year and it's a clear winner in pretty much every category that someone with kids on a budget would care about.

The dodge grand caravan (dgc) has haunted me on the roads of California for over a decade. If ever there is a vehicle holding up a drive thru line, dgc. If there is a vehicle driving excessively slow on a one lane highway, dgc. If there is a vehicle entering a freeway on ramp ahead of me to go 10mph below the speed limit, dgc. If there is a vehicle with parts falling off of it or trash being thrown out its windows, dgc. I avoid this van with a sense of urgency that makes a peregrine falcon look slow.

That was a better generation than this. You can't get comfortable in any of these 2007-17 minivans, because the seats SUCK. They are hard boards in back and front that are there to be cheap. The best thing these have going for them is the fold-away seats. My dad uses his Grand Caravan as a truck, and it's a decent truck. It gets no love, and continues on, but the 2001-07 Grand Caravans (2 of them, same colour) that preceded it were far better. Chrysler still has the magic wand with electronics. The blower motor sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. The dash lights come on only when you whack the HVAC binnacle. Glorious.

Sure they're not going to win any races but once you get them up over 40MPH they do get more lively. If you just need/want basic transportation that gets decent gas mileage and can haul things when needed you could do a lot worse than a town and country/Caravan.

Yeah they really aren’t as bad as they’re made out to be… as long as you keep up on maintenance. If you let them start falling apart, they don’t hide it very well.
