My sister had a 2013 Sonic just like that, even the same color, except it was a turbo 1.4 with an automatic. She bought it new. Around 50,000 miles it started having to be worked on at least once a week. At just under 100,000 miles the engine blew when the cam chain broke. The Turbo was also on it's way out, probably because the oil line to the turbo was too small to provide adequate lubrication. Half the engine was made out of plastic. It was well appointed LT model, power windows, cruise control and 15" alloy wheels. By the way, it's not a Chevrolet, it's a Daewoo. She paid $18,000 for it. About 2 months later I bought a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis with 67,000 miles on it for $7,000. It's still running like new with over 300,000 miles on it. Only problems have been a bad alternator, and the rear air suspension failed. I replaced it with coil springs. New is not always better.

I've been pretty happy with my 2014 sonic. I did have an issue with the thermostat leaking from the block and lost all A/C and heat. Just like this, it was under warranty though. I like mine a lot and love the looks. It's a touch too small though. When I go out shooting I have to lean my rifles up against the back seat because it is too narrow to lay down any of my long guns. Beyond that its a pretty fun car.

One good thing about a timing belt, when u buy the kit you prevent other failures belt/chain related. Like water pump, tensioner, pullys n what not. If u can do it yourself like i did (1994 gs300) its a win. Cause ur good for 8ish years after that.

I have the 09 Aveo hatchback that preceded this car.... It makes the Sonic look perfect. ...Yeah, that bad. My air pipe did that too! ...It cost $300 to replace. For a $40 part. Because it wasn't under warranty. My dealership garage totally ripped me off.

Recalls don't mean your shit's broke. It means your'e actually fixing things. A company can just do 0 recalls on shit products and by your logic that would mean they have the most reliable cars. A company doesn't have to recall. They do it to keep customers and their cars on the road and prevent lawsuits.

I praise Chevrolet for offering a Traditional Asian econobox that was (fairly) reliable with a manual, even if started to break down after 100K miles, and wasn’t as reliable or well made as the Yaris or Fit.

I had one of these as a rental car in Hawaii - within 3 days I broke the whole key fob by just *pressing* the unlock button. I'm serious, I pressed it like a normal human being and the whole faceplate collapsed into the chip. It was in pieces. The door handle then broke pulling the driver door open after a couple days of using the physical key to gain entry since, you know, the fob shattered. I pulled and the spring didn't pull it back. It just remained "open" so the door could swing around as I drove. As a fun little easter egg, if you floor the accelerator it sounds like the engine is a sentient being that is attempting to rip its way out through the top of the hood and put an end to itself all over the road like Kurt Cobain did to his bedroom walls.

The Traction Control switch is in the center console and turns off with one push of the button, hold it for more then 10 sec and the Stability Control will turn off too. I call the Traction Control button my sport mode button, turn it off at least once a day. Also you should review the Turbo model to compare to the 1.8.

Had one of these as a hire car when we went to the USA. Air conditioning was good but that's the only good thing I have to say. We had the saloon and the boot (trunk for u Americans) felt like it was made of paper. And the automatic gearbox was absolute arse. Changed at stupid times and wouldn't accelerate for anything. Maybe because in the Uk we are used to Manuals but pretty sure an auto shouldn't change gears 26 times a second
