My uncle is 6’5 and like 210 pounds, tall thin fella. He went to the dealer in 1995 and said, “I’ll buy whatever I can fit in,” and thought the salesman was having a hoot when he wheeled up a Metro. But the seat scooches so far back it was a great fit! He dailied that thing until it had 300,000 miles.

my friend in high school would let me drive his mother's Geo Metro (just because he was so terrible at manual transmission). try driving that thing with 4 200lb football athletes in it, you had to keep the thing floored. and it still angered people behind us because it was so horribly slow

All jokes aside, and in the most somber seriousness. I have cried at this review. I was expecting a real review, not a reality check. At one point in my life I had three of these. Now I just have one, my museum metro. I don't know if you wrote it satirically, but this car did exactly what you said. It saved my life. It got me out of my dead end meth slum town, to the city, to work a honest job, it got me out of debt, it got me through college and the first seven years of my career... This wretched little car, and make no mistake metros are wretched, is directly responsible for the success I have today.

@@zangl2955 An honest job more or less equaled a physical labor job that paid over the table. In my case the factory had been shuttered since before my dad's time and those jobs were long gone. So I ended up in a warehouse, close to but still pre-amazon. I would recommend to anyone who is currently lost to try getting a CDL and becoming a truck driver, the looming threat of self driving vehicles has tanked an already difficult to hire for industry which is absolutely desperate for workers and there is still time to make a career in-between the changing of the guard.
@VIP-ry6vv

@@r1oot of course, it's not all roses and there is no such thing as a perfect job. Many companies are predatory and I certainly did my time with a really shitty company (starts with s and rhymes with wift) before getting the position I have now. There are still really good job opportunities in trucking. But at least I had a job and was moving forward, that's what I mean in my advice; for anyone not moving forward in life trucking is a valid option that virtually anyone can do and even the worst trucking jobs beat fast food or retail.

But is the Metro any more dangerous than some hothead in a beefed up Charger who's weaving in and out of traffic because "I can"? The problem with safety gear on a car is it gives people a false sense of security and makes them feel invincible. I'm all for safety, but people aren't being taught that you can still die in an accident in even the safest of cars.

I had one for over a decade. It had AC. Super reliable, and it got me through the Bush gas crunch. I remember $5.00 gas, and strangers walking up to me and wanting to buy my car. I got 44 mpg on road trips at 75 mph. Beat the crap out of it in city driving. I finally sold it to get a Fiesta ST. Would have kept it for a winter beater (no rust on it), but didn't have the space. It's still running fine today, I imagine, and someone's getting to work CHEAP.

I have had a 1993 Geo Metro for around two years, and it is by far my favorite car I have ever owned. Never before have I felt "connected" to a car, but my little red Geo, "Tug," has somehow managed it. There is a weird companionship with these little things that is so hard to explain. I made a mid-engine SHO-swapped Metro. One of my fondest memories of that car was there was a point in the build that I had the new drivetrain fully installed (not yet running) but the stock drivetrain was also still working. So I got to experience what it feels like to drive a stock metro essentially lugging around the dead weight of an entire front half of a Taurus 😂.

When my grandma moved up to North Carolina from Texas back in the mid 90’s, the Geo Metro was the first car she had. I remember her pulling up to our house in the early 2000’s to watch me and my brother. Even after she passed in 2021, this car will have a special place in my heart
@umad42
@umad42 Жыл бұрын
The last car my grandma ever drove was a Geo Metro, she was hit in it, after a guy went over the center line and hit her head on at 50 MPH. The crash basically put the engine in her lap and broke both of her femurs, but if it was a heavier built car it would have stopped faster, pulled more Gs and killed her. The chintsy, light build of that car saved her life and she went on to live nearly 20 more years after, and was walking again after 5 or so, with her husband driving her everywhere in their other Geo Metro.

We had a Geo Metro for years, loved that thing. The gas mileage was incredible. We could fit a colossal amount of stuff in the hatchback. The tires were tiny and cheap to replace. We could fit in any parking spot except for SmartCar spaces. We were pulled out of a ferry queue once and directed to the front of the line to be the last car on the ferry because there was JUST enough room for us. My 6’2” husband fit into it easily. Campers passed us on hills. Once we had the oil changed and the mechanic said “the engine - it’s so cute!” We put over 100k on it, including driving from BC to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (yes over the Rockies). Sold it eventually to a collector of Geos on Vancouver Island. I hope she’s still driving around somewhere. Miss you, little Jelly Bean.

I'm glad you talk about the safety issue of this car. Because when I was younger my dad had to drive a 93 geo metro as his daily for work as a contract security guard. In 2008 he was out visiting a friend it was raining heavily and he took a turn hit a thick patch of wet leaves slid and for some reason in the middle of fuckin nowhere Pennsylvania he got into a nearly head on collision with a Lincoln Navigator. Unfortunately this car model was before air bags were mandated so he didn't have an air bag. The seatbelt saved his life from flying out of the car but he slammed his face into the steering wheel. He had a laundry list of injuries from the accident, most notably a shattered left orbital bone (that's the bones around the eye), a broken jaw, a broken left leg, and (as written on the report by the doctor) several broken ribs. Unfortunately even after he survived, all of that had made him age off a cliff. You'd think he was in his 60s or 70s by the time he died in 2015. He died at 49. I don't post this to scare people away from this car. I really liked that little fart cart, it was fun to drive around in at my grandparents place. I post this just to tell people. Be careful. These cars are good and point A point B. But they are like Little Mac vs Mike Tyson. If you've read this this far Thank you for your time and I hope you have a nice day.

The people that had em would have liked something nicer, to the extent they cared, sure, but they tended to be really trustworthy and a lot of non-car people really appreciated that. (Though I had an ex who started with one of those and then after that got a Paseo and considered it a fast car. :) )

I'm so happy someone finally submitted one of these. I had one back in 2017 that I wanted to submit, but it started to have problems and was too dangerous to submit in good conscience. That being said, it was the coolest vehicle to have in high school. When I got it in 2016, gas was $1 a gallon for a bit and took a while to climb. None of my friends had cars so they paid me to drive them everywhere. We went on day trips, raced clapped out fiestas, and even coasted down a mountain just to see if we could get to the pie shop without an engine (we nearly had it perfect too, if someone hadn't stepped into the parking spot we wouldn't have needed the engine for the last 2 feet). We even found a funny trick, if 2 or more people rocked back and forth in the seats, you could get a speed boost. You could watch the speedometer jump up each time. I sold it for more than I paid and made that much again in gas money. I'll never forget watching that car drive away for the last time.

My first car was a 96 Geo Metro LSi with the 4-cylinder not the three. So it had some power. However a popular engine swap because it's actually a Suzuki with a Chevy badge basically, you can take the Suzuki Swift GTI which is a 100 HP 1300 cc engine and put it in there or you can put a real motor in there and take the 2.3 l engine out of a Suzuki aerio which will bolt right up to the stock Geo Metro gearbox. Don't know much but 160 horsepower in a 1600 pound car is going to make that thing scoot.

I love these. I owned like 7 of them as a Europian, we have Suzuki Swift here. I learned how to fix everything. Swaping engines.. Me and my friend even build one engine our selfs. I daily drive this to work, getting 500+km per tank. And in some twisty downhills, this thing Is actualy kinda fun, mainly becouse rear suspension Is not from 1850 horse wagon like most of the cheap economy cars in Europe. In Europe there was even optional ABS and power steering. Had one with power steering And 1.0 engine. And you can literary turn the wheel with one finger. Also had one with A/C. Every time i push that button, it felt like J-brake :D also A/C had normal And Eco modes. One time we hit Giant pathole and shamed trough the oil pan. 5 minute drive to home, change the oil pan, pour some random Tesco oil in it, And it run like new. ONLY one time we manage to kill G10A with about 15minutes of non stop full throttle driving in rev limiter with no oil. And there was GTI version 1.3 twincam with 74kw Doesnt seem much, but for weight of average shopping cart. This thing is beat. Mainly becouse a lot of Cars around that era in Europe had similar power numbers, but weight like 2 of these. If you want a Honda, but dont have money for it, buy geo metro. You wont regret it. It will save you money,

My parents used to have 3 of these. The loss of gas mileage was due to changes in the ECU programming to meet updated emissions standards. You could frankenstein gen1 programming to a gen2 ECU and gain 10 - 15 mpg. Smash up the cat, remove the back seats, and replace the intake and you can easily get 60+ mpg. I drove my Dad's test Metro from Montgomery, AL to Disney world and a little of the way back on a single tank of gas, which would have cost a little less than $10. As much as the butt of jokes that the Metros were, I did have a ton of fun driving and tinkering on them with my Dad.

I had a 2000 Chevy Metro that constructed its own social constructs contrary to how I understood it. I beat the mess out of it, I jumped it over train tracks, did handbrake 180s into parking spots, was known locally for street drifting with the e-brake in snow, staging fake police chases with it and my friends crown Vic, doing reverse 180s in tight areas and other generalized stunt driving. I was young and bullheaded. In the winter time I'd often start it up cold and bang the rev limiter for a minute straight before driving it. At one point the catalytic converter came off and we all joked it sounded like it had a Subaru swap. I'd hit heel toe downshifts aggressively coming down hills while slowing for corners. Once while street drifting in the rain, I hit a curb with the back right wheel bending the lower rear control arm. I drove it sideways to shop class where me and my shop class teacher removed the control arm, got it red hot and hit it with a hammer until it was relatively straight. That car never gave me any issues. I put gas in it and went I didn't even change the oil for 50,000 mi. I drove it locally, cross country, in all weather conditions. It always started up, It never burned oil, It always went and it got 40 miles per gallon doing so. That was one of the best cars I've ever owned. When I met that car I thought it was a Calvin's dad style econo box. But it etched itself in my brain as something much greater than I could ever describe.

But I'm biased due to the "small" cars that have passed through my hands: 1976 Fiat 128 3p, stick 1988 Hyundai Excel GLS, sedan, stick 1995 Geo Prizm, sedan, automatic 1979 BMW 320i, 2-door, automatic 1983 Honda CVCC, 2-door, stick 1996 Corolla wagon, 4-door, stick (333K miles, current and happiness maker --> like the Metro herein!) Best regards 👍🚗

This was my first car but my dad totaled it the day after he got it for me while I was in the passenger seat. I remember a lamp pole coming down on the car and getting out just fine. Absolutely insane childhood memory.

Did a parts delivery job in highschool (2004). They had a (from new) 1998 Metro, 2dr hatch automatic no ac no options. In 2004 it had 457000 well abused kilometers the last i saw it. Everyone said once it died, they'd replace it. I saw it driving for 3 years after i graduated lol Horrible yet great car

My friends wife owned an automatic Metro sedan back in high school. Couldn't get it past 55 on a level road. But 45 mpg was great for 2006 when the price of gas spiked

I had to drive one of these Metro convertibles once, and at 45mph, it was scary to be on the road with other cars. And that was in the 90’s.

When he said "it costs 40 bucks to fill the tank and that takes you 400 miles".... I was like... my 2021 Kia Soul with all the nice modern comforts and safety features gets the same numbers in fuel economy, and it's a 4000 pound car. It's easy to speed because it is so quiet and smooth to drive. It's commendable in the 90s that a car manufacturer could get those numbers... but it was at a huge sacrifice for comfort AND safety.

This video also captures exactly how I feel about my yugo, it’s a pain in many respects it’s got a lot going against it but at the end of the day there’s not a part on the thing that exceeds $500 and it keeps going, it’s also very fun in a way that few can appreciate. It gets the job done.

I used to drive one of these for Napa auto parts. I learned Joe to drive stick on it. It was a fun car for being so low powered. It had a horrible exhaust leak and I felt like I was in a fast and furious movie because I had to keep my foot in the pedal. It actually handled better than expected for how slow it was. The key to having the fun in that car was to enter the curves as fast as you could.

I was about to say that you can totally do these kinda MPG figures with modern cars, and point to the VW Lupo. Then I remembered the VW Lupo is 26 years old, and gazed long into the yawning jaws of entropy gaping before me.

I've driven one of these. They are wonderfully simple cars, and are actually fun to drive, in a way that you can push the thing to it's absolute limits without breaking the speed limit.

When I think of the “90s car” this is what comes to mind. I’ve been alive long enough to see them everywhere, to pointing them out every time I see them. I honestly see the metro (often as the hatch) as the beetle of the era. I’ve always felt that’s a fair comparison.

One of the best RCR videos ever! I thought you would bash this car all the way to the end but you didn’t. I’ve never owned a geo metro but I respect it for what it is. I’ve known a few people that had them over the years and they are amazing little cars, not pretentious or trying to be anything they aren’t. Just a humble basic car with amazing MPG and cheap maintenance.

Proof: I lived in a Geo as a vagrant from 2014-6 while working at Walmart. I worked my way up to a van and then a real house. Also, I put a sheet of plastic over the headlamps to contour it and reduce drag.

This is the content I subscribe for. A friend of mine bought one of these brand new in the mid 90s on his Fat Albert's salary and loved it. The epitome of the aluminum foil car. Saw several movies at the drive-in from the front seat of one of these. Thanks for the stories Mr. Regular.

These were marketed in my native Venezuela as Chevrolet Swift and had 16 valve 1.6 liter four bangers in them. They were quite peppy compared to other similar cars on the road. And believe it or not they were expensive compared to the 1994 Ford Festiva I ended up getting. Ahhh the good ol' days!

My grandparents had a Geo Metro in the '90s and early '00 I was little but I can remember that teal car. My grandfather would get 50+ mpg with it but had to keep it running at the gas station in the winter to try to produce heat because the motor was so small. Thanks for reviewing this car.

For 6 years I pumped gas at a local Albertons and every single day of those six years one of my most regular customers was a 400lb dude living on disability checks who drove a blue 95 Geo Metro. The passenger seat had been replaced by a trash can but yet the entire car was overflowing with garbage. He kept the same paper Pepsi fountain drink cup for weeks until it fell apart so he could pay the .79 cents for a 44oz refill and whatever change he had leftover...maybe .18-cents, would go into the fuel tank. For what it's worth, that car never broke down and the tank never ran dry. He always had gas and change for his 44oz Pepsi
