Hey... I'm an organic farmer here in Japan (Sendai) and I have a 2015 Honda Acty truck, 2017 Honda Shuttle, and a 2006 Honda Hobio (my favorite). Obviously the Hobio and Acty are kei (it's pronounced "kay", by the way). Get a ticket and come drive my shit. You can review my tractors, too. Hell, I even have a field by the Sugo circuit and you can take the cars there and pretend they're race cars.

Keep in mind that Kei-class vehicles were primarily designed for Japanese city streets; unlike North America, Japan has a very high overall population density; almost 10 times over the average across the entirety of the United States. That means lots of buildings and lots of traffic, thus that puny engine won't matter so much.

They are brilliant at what they do best. Designed for crowded Japanese cities. My ex wife used to have a fleet of 5 for urban deliveries in English villages & towns, some of the streets date back to medieval lanes meant for a pony & cart where a Ford Transit would struggle or even not pass at all. Any American that has been to old English towns will understand. As for speed, the average speed of inner London traffic is barely more than horse & cart days.

+PUU-TAAH Nin Nin It is more like "kay", yes. But it's just the accents and how you pronounce spellings. Someone who speaks English will say "key", and someone who is Japanese or a related language will say "kay". They're both acceptable. Hyundai is pronounced "Hoo-n-d-ie" in Korea, but English say all sorts of weird amalgamations of "Hi" "un" "yun" "die". And that's fine.

I miss my kei van, Daihatsu Hijet. Despite how it feels, they don’t tip because all of the weight is on the floor. I got it sideways on a dirt road once by accident and I swear it was going to roll, but everything was fine. It’s also pretty fun to drive at low speeds because you can fit through anywhere, turn on a dime, parking is never an issue, and you’re constantly shifting gears with a super marshmallow clutch (at least on mine).

In case you were wondering, these kind of vans are also produced in Mainland China and Taiwan in the LHD form, but finding a 25 yo one with mint condition like the Acty shown in the video can be challenging because most of those are totaled or abandoned due to regulation or their poor condition even before they live up for 25 years.

in Egypt, Suzuki Super Carry's are a staple of public transport. No one is familiar with the term "Kei vehicle", it's just treated as a regular vehicle and no one thinks it's strange or anything. It just hit me that I see these on the high way all the time and I didn't realize they were so weak. Mind you these vans haul 7 full grown adults ( not including the driver and in these cramped spaces) hundreds of times a day from place to place for years on end! Honestly now that I think about it, it's kind of amazing.

"This is how they Japan in Japan!" LOL! Also, "To Japan" means "To apply a hardened, asphalt-based, durable lacquer-type finish". Often seen on tools made in years gone by, it was developed as a substitute for authentic Japanese lacquering techniques, so in Japan they actually DO Japan differently!

"Kay", surely? I dunno about the smug smile thing you get in the states, but borrowing a Daihatsu equivalent for a while was certainly a fun, smile inducing experience. So long as you kept it under 65, where it developed a terrifying shimmy. The crazy seating position actually gives you a good view around in traffic, it turns like nothing else at low speed which lets you pull scary lateral G on city streets, the midengine design and fairly light upper body on top of a low-ride chassis means it's actually got a low centre of gravity and despite the worrying amount of roll you have to try really hard to get it to tip over... the mini-like wheel-at-each-corner design helps keep it planted as well. Though I dunno if I'd have been so gung ho if it was loaded up with cargo... using it as a commuter hack felt rather like cheating.

It was a Daewoo, which is a rebadged Daihatsu, which at the same time shares most of the components in this van as well. I drove this thing a couple of times and it's fun as hell. Very reliable little vans as well. My friend had it since 1998, brand new. Lasted about 12 years with minimum maintenance. Almost tipped over quite a dozen of times though :D

Dat Daihatsu Mini-Truk. Mmmmmm.. I don't know what it's like in the rest of the country, but around where I'm at in the back-asswards rural everything that is the corners where Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana meet the place is Lousy with grey-import Daihatsu Mini-trucks Exactly. Like. That one. Why? Because Jeeps and Tacomas have gotten too big and too expensive to go bouncing across the pasture doing farm-work during the week and then go bouncing through the woods Huntin' during the weekend, and side-by-side ATVs and UTVs are too Not-Road-Legal to replace them.

A friend of mine has two of these, one van and one pickup. I got to drive the pickup version around for a few days during a visit and was surprised at how peppy the vehicle felt. Sure, 37 horsepower isn't much, but the 0-20mph acceleration was pretty decent if I floored it, and I didn't have any trouble keeping up with other cars on regular city streets. I'd imagine the van is a bit heavier and more sluggish for sure. Either way, the driving experience was incredibly fun and has me really tempted to get my own someday.
