@Bleachanna indeed. The last generation rear wheel drive GM B-body uses suspension components that were used on prior GM F-bodies and A-bodies, in cars like the Chevelle, Malibu, Firebird, and Camaro. In a nutshell they designed bodies that appealed to more mature buyers that fit with the technology that they already had. That's why they were able to give us the '94-96 Impala SS, the underpinnings for a more performance-oriented sedan were already in the design, they only had to tweak the spring rates and swaybars and put different wheels and tires on. If you're really feeling motivated you can do a cylinder-head swap, remove the cast iron heads and put the aluminum ones from a Corvette on. Just don't expect the same longevity out of head gaskets if you do.

Why are Sedans fading in the wake of SUVs? What is a modern Sedan? A modern Sedan has low ground-clearance, to improve aerodynamics (and imitate more stylish custom-cars.) A modern Sedan has tiny gun-slit windows to improve side-impact protection, you know.. because they're lower to the ground (and to imitate more stylish custom-cars). A modern Sedan has a tiny trunk, or a tiny and awkward opening to access said trunk, or both; to reduce rear overhang (and imitate more stylish custom-cars.) An OLD Sedan, has ground-clearance (like a modern SUV), has big windows (like a modern SUV), has plenty of cargo-space (like a modern SUV). The question isn't 'why is everybody going to SUVs and abandoning Sedans?' .. it should be 'WHY did manufacturers stop building Sedans RIGHT?'
@schwenda37275 жыл бұрын
Hear escalating modern CAFE bare minimums on CARS is actually a big one while TRUCKS are a lot more lenient. Also, those ugly Chevy Trax's, Encores, Cx3's, HRVs & CHRs are also literally classified as trucks as opposed to a lifted up version of the half-assed featureless subcompact CARS they're most likely based off...
@dcp102005 жыл бұрын
And my Safari can literally do everything a modern Mid Size SUV can do (It's even All Wheel Drive and has functional 3rd Row Seating), but SUVs are "sexy" and "Sleek" and admitedly get better MPGs than the old 350 with 2 cylinders cut off (Vortec 4.3), Safaris also tend to be more on the Truck side of things as compared to modern SUVs and they don't hold your hand while driving. Mid and Full Size vans of the 70s through early 00s had character and you could take an otherwise plain jane people mover and really make it your own, toss some nice Mag Wheels on, bullet mufflers and side exit exhaust, and wide fender flairs tied together with a cool paint job and you have yourself a functional daily and a project build on your hands. You can kinda see this with full size Body on Frame SUVs like the Tahoe and Escalade, but that style has fallen out of favor for the Tuner/JDM car craze and vans now are scarce. My fear is that if GM decided to bring back the Astro and Safari that they'd turn it into some sort of weird SUV or Crossover like what happened with the new Blazer, because everything has to be an upmarket SUV now (granted M Vans were fairly expensive when they were new). I'd love to see a modern Van resurgence in the North American auto industry, a Safari with a 5.3 Ecotec V8 or a throwback Econoline with slightly updated styling (maybe a 300/4.9 Liter I6 but not choked up with the emissions systems of the '70s) like what Dodge did with the Challenger, hell even if they did make SUVs go and make a Modern S10 Blazer based of the Colorado and introduce GMC Typhoon back to the market. Maybe it's my nostalgia speaking, but there's something special about vans and trucks of yesteryear that modern SUVs can never have.
@Face2theScr33n5 жыл бұрын
Federal regulations make it so SUV's are considered trucks so they don't have to meet the ever-more strict car efficiency and safety standards. And people pay more for suv's and "Crossovers (whatever the hell that means LOL)".
@P7777-u7r5 жыл бұрын
It’s America’s back assward fuel economy regulations that should have died when the oil crisis ended and yeah they were written in the 70s and are stuck there There are less stringent minimum fuel economy requirements for “trucks” than for cars and since SUVs didn’t exist really in the 70s they’ve been ruled to fall under “trucks” for the purposes of the law. Those requirements made sense back then because there was a legitimate shortage of oil and most people daily drove cars whereas trucks were mostly for work So basically cars have had to get smaller lower to the ground much smaller engines etc. Manufacturers started pushing people who wanted bigger vehicles towards SUVs instead because its easier to make them while dealing with fuel economy regulations. Fun fact: this is also why the crown vics that aren’t P71s are massively de tuned whereas P71s get fuel exhaust bigger intake etc. Vehicles made for emergency services/the military don’t count against a manufacturers fuel economy score

I'm 19 and I would love to have this car as my first car! I love the burgundy interior and the front looks real nice to me. I'd probably want a different and tighter stearing wheel because I sure as hell wouldn't want to turn the wheel so damn much just to move a little.

I know i am not the first person to say it, but this is what top gear america should have been. It should have been a factual show(like the UK one is) filled with coy references to various quirky facets of americana, not some testosterone filled videodrome wanna be. Just look at the cast of TG UK: A musician, a painter, and a racist orangoutang, not rally drivers and movie stars.

I never understood why we no longer have these huge “Yank Tanks” ( as the British called them). The state of Cadillac Escalades and Lincoln Navigators prove there’s still a market for large vehicles. If Cadillac would only put out a 70s-sized sedan with modern engine efficiency, it would sell like hotcakes. I’ve always loved these traditional huge land barges. I once owned a 1973 Ford LTD and a 1974 Chevrolet Caprice Classic convertible. The view out and over those huge hoods was amazing!

In defense of crossovers, they offer many more advantages than sedans do: -Better visibility -More cargo space because of the hatch -Higher ground clearance -Longer traveling suspensions -Slightly better off-road abilities if AWD However, crossovers are now just as boring as sedans are to appeal to the consumer. The only non-boring ones are the first-gen Toyota RAV4 and the new Mazda CX-5. They took over because of dumb consumers. It's like the people who buy a Toyota Corolla S with the automatic and say they have something "sporty" just because it has aesthetic parts. People buy a crossover and think they're getting a "mini-SUV" so that they can "Go off-road and in the snow". In all reality they'll be only slightly better off than their sedan counterparts unless they have AWD and special tires. So really, this crossover trend is just the sedan trend in a new body style.

Have you driven the current generation Ford Escape with the 2.0li EcoBoost? The thing moves and handles pretty well. Its essentially the same exact engine thats in the Focus ST. Plus in Titanium trim its a nice place to be.
@collarbonecam10 жыл бұрын
Unbearable Pain crossovers may have a little better visibility than modern sedans, which most look to be designed to hide their 4 doors and try to look as coupish as possible, but older sedans, at least the ones ive been in, have had the best visibility of any car ive driven. And yes they do have more cargo space than sedans but most people who buy crossovers really dont need all that extra space the crossover provides. I fit my whole dormroom into my volvo 850. I dont buy into this whole crossover thing though it does make sense for some. Im just excited for when people realize they can just buy a wagon and get on just fine.

Unbearable Pain A crossover is basically a crossbreed between a minivan and a hatchback, with slightly higher suspension and SUV-looks. It has all the advantages of the boring practical body types with just enough style to appeal to a typical consumer.

in it's day this was a good performing, good handling car (especially when equipped with the handling package). one could make a point that it was a very well engineered, durable reliable, safe, good performing vehicle that did what it was designed to do very well, especially comparing it to a bmw or mercedes that was three times the price of the buick. if this vehicle were built today, it would be hard to get a vehicle better suited to a cross country trip. you have contempt for the concept of this vehicle that is evident. the Caprice was also an amazing vehicle considering price, performance (with the LT1 engine), and comfort. don't mind if i say your comments were ill considered.

This car, the Chevy variant and the Cadillac Fleetwood of these years are excellent cars and extremely long lived and durable. Your Buick with a manual shift is really cool.

There are several reasons why the big sedan died. First, Detroit was determined to chase an older demographic and invest as little a possible in their big sedans, aging them in the public mindset all the quicker(with the possible exception of the Chrysler LHS, but even that not for long). Second, the space is gone. All the modern crash standards, airbags, equipment and other bloat have turned once vast interiors into the kind of space you'd expect out of an old Taurus. Worse on that front, the exterior dimensions are still just as big on the few remaining cars, while delivering disappointment inside. Third, performance-wise technology has caught up and now SUVs can attain the kind of speed and handling that these old barges could only hope to achieve. So now the land yacht has no advantage in price, space or speed, while crossovers and SUVs still get to pretend they have any rough road capabilities.

Flame Yep, I had a gen 1 Taurus, baby crap brown. Lovable old goat, though it did try to blow itself up, twice.

***** Most crossovers don't have any interior space worth mentioning either. They're popular because of the seating position and visibility. People like a car they can get into and out of easily, and they like seeing over other vehicles. Of course, what happens when we're all driving crossovers? They start driving box vans?

@MindBlowerWTF10 жыл бұрын
randomrazr He compared 1995 model which is 80ish with 2015 SUVs.
@theenhancer10 жыл бұрын
randomrazr The DTS was exactly the kind of car reinforcing the retirement age stereotype. Bland styling, and an interesting engine strangled by FF dynamics and a 4-speed slushbox. The XTS is where we have come to with big cars. Thankfully the styling has come around, but the massive pillars, reduced vision, and interior scrunch is all there. Mind you, I'm not pointing the finger at Cadillac here, these are issues seen across the board, but it is why the design is struggling. I mean, when people can buy Ford Explorers with more interior space that are also faster, we have a problem.

Some years ago, a friend of mine had brought his teenage daughter a large Buick for her first car. She lived several states away, so he drove the car to give it to her. After a 7 hour road trip, He decided he was not going to give it to her, because he was so impressed with the big Buick's ride quality, The smoothness, road noise and vibration absorbing was unmatched by anything he had experienced, . He kept it for himself as a trip taking car. The ride quality of the older Buicks are better than any car,.. yes I said any,. This can be measured and confirmed with test equipment,. It is amazing how luxury now is considered feeling every bump in the road, like in BMW's
