‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib (r) is the younger cousin and son in law of the Prophet Muhammad (p), who was raised in the household of the Prophet since he was a child and is believed to be one of the earliest converts to Islam at its beginning. For Sunnī Muslims ‘Alī is the last out of four Rightly Guided Caliphs who are seen as standard bearers within the framework of Sunni orthodoxy; to Shī’ī Muslims he is seen as their first Imām; and with Muslims who identify as Ibādī he is held in high esteem despite his alleged shortcomings from their perspective. With these modern takes on the personality and character of ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib it's hard to believe that once upon time he was an extremely controversial figure in early Islam. But in this book Opposing the Imām, which will be the topic of discussion in this episode of Real Talk with Terron Poole, the author Nebil Husayn brilliantly demonstrates through his investigation of diverse Muslim writings from the 8th to the 13th century how the person of ‘Ali ibn Abī Tālib was once ghettoized by a considerable amount of Muslims but whos image eventually became rehibilated to how the vast majority of Muslims see him today. So please welcome Dr. Nebil Husayn, and Thank you sir for agreeing to meet with me to discuss the contents of your book which I found to be extremely eye opening, to say the least.
