I'm very confident that it's not simply returning $3000 out of $10,000, but something about the pattern of returns. A couple of years ago I returned $2800 out of perhaps $3300 in purchases, but what I returned was one $2800 kayak. I (foolishly) loaded it while it was still partially wrapped, and when I unwrapped it to go paddling 2 days later I discovered that the end had been hit and had a dent and some cracking. As a member the guarantee would have let me paddle it for 364 days, routinely banging it against a bunch of rocks and dragging it around, then completely break it by dropping it off the roof of my van, and return it for a full refund after year. It's a very generous return policy, and some people are obviously going to abuse it. I don't doubt that their methods are imperfect and a few honest people will be banned, but even if this woman is completely honest about the reason for all those returns she has at least demonstrated a substantial propensity for making frequent returns. You can't continue to accommodate customers like that, reward your customers with the very generous return policy, and remain a profitable business.

I've joked that it is Instagram influencers because sometimes entire camping sets including chairs and warm blankets are returned and you can just assume that they are taking pictures on a weekend trip to the mountains and then returning everything. If they wanna be Instagram famous in my view, or whatever the excuse, they can try another chain. We, the members of REI CoOp stand behind the decision.

The woman in the story provided evidence that she has purchased about $10,000 worth of merchandise and returned about $3,000. A 30% return rate is high, in my estimation. People need to understand that returns cost the business money in terms of labor to stock and ship the item to you and again when you return it. Also, if you remove the tags from and item now it isn’t new and goes on the discount rack. I am an REI member and over the years I have spent a few thousand dollars with them but my rate of return is much lower. I don’t know exactly but probably about 5% of my purchases and all but one of those items were unused and still had tags. The one item I returned without tags was a pair of pants that were very uncomfortable. I really didn’t think they would take them back but they were $100 so I asked if there was anything they could do to help me. They returned them at full value and explained the return policy which was very generous. I was grateful and impressed with their customer service. But when a company offers a good benefit like this you shouldn’t abuse it because they can take it away and likely will take it away from everybody,not just the abuser. I am actually surprised that in this case they are only addressing the issue with the return abusers and not changing the policy for everyone. Having said that, they could have sent the members perceived to be abusing the return policy a letter of warning before cutting them off entirely.

REI is a Co-Op. I've been a member since 1976. Back then I could only get items by mail order from a catalog. Clothing was not a major part of the program. The core focus was equipment of the highest quality from small batch suppliers often outside the USA. Now it's run as if it were a retail chain with a perks club. I fully stand behind the new returns policy. Until the 1990's outdoors clothing was rarely considered a fashion choice. Now it's a ubiquitous genre. Fashion retailers have to put stoppers on serial returns and return patterns routinely. Outdoor clothing has become fashionable and of surprisingly inferior design by previously trustworthy brands cashing in their reputations for short term profit. If being caught in the crossroads of this traffic is alarming, I doubt the solution is burdensome.

I mean, I return a lot too, so I understand where she’s coming from. (Not REI though.) Mainly clothing and such. The problem is that sizes vary so much between brands and my body is irregular. But not only between brands, but sizes can vary depending on the item from the same brand. So, the only way to know if something fits properly is by trying it on. Normally, I like to shop in store, so I can just try on stuff there, but an increasing number of products that I’d like to buy are either not offered in store entirely, or the sizes I need are not offered in store. (Or the store just closes entirely in my area). So, I then end up buying a couple of each item, because I buy two or three sizes to try. Then, all of the clothes that don’t fit (1/3 to 1/2 of what I buy) I return. Sadly, with the rise of online shopping, this is becoming more and more common for me. If a store doesn’t carry all sizes and then decided to ban returns or exchanges, I will definitely no longer be shopping there.
@OccamsToaster9 күн бұрын
You're buying stuff specifically with the intent of returning it? You're *exactly* the type of customer REI doesn't need. Her own spreadsheet says the stuff was returned rather than exchanged. Maybe what the news story didn't tell us is that she's a moron who can't even be bothered to order the size she expects to fit and then exchange it, rather than return it, if it doesn't fit. The rest of us would be far better off if stores stop letting you and Karen drive up prices for the sensible people.
@fidgetthedalmation74338 күн бұрын
I am not buying stuff specifically with the intention of returning it. I am buying stuff with the intention of ensuring I’m buying a size that fits. I used to just buy the one size that I would expect to fit, but then just too many times, it didn’t. So, now, I order a couple of sizes because I don’t have time to be buying a size and waiting 1-2 weeks for it, only to find out that it doesn’t fit, and then need to buy another size and wait another 1-2 weeks. Plus, then I have to pay for shipping for the second order too. This way, I know I’m buying a size that fits. Taking up to a month to do something that could take 1-2 days in store is ridiculous. So, I actually see myself as very sensible. I will also note that I do not keep a spreadsheet or anything and I also do not order very much. If stores don’t like it, then they should be keeping better stock of the range of products and sizes available in store.
@OccamsToaster7 күн бұрын
@@fidgetthedalmation7433 I see it as stupid and inconsiderate. If you are buying 3 of the same item in 3 different sizes you're very definitely buying stuff with the intention of returning it. Unless you have far more difficulty than most people, you should be right about the necessary size most of the time. When you do need to exchange something it shouldn't take more than perhaps 10 days to return an item and get the next size up or down, which should definitely fit unless you're very bad at it.
@fidgetthedalmation74337 күн бұрын
@@OccamsToaster I see your comment as inconsiderate. I explained why I do it. Typically, it’s not 3 different sizes, just 2. But I do have more difficulty than most people because my body type and size is abnormal and I’m very often at the edge of two sizes. It’s often a 50/50 between which will fit. As I mentioned, I used to only buy 1 size. But it became far too common that the one I ordered wouldn’t fit, being at that border. Up to 10 (business) days is how long it usually takes, so you’re correct. But 10 business days is two weeks. Again, as I mentioned, waiting 1-2 weeks for the first order, then needing to exchange it and wait another 1-2 weeks along with pay for shipping again is ridiculous when it’s something that can be done in 1-2 days in store.

The problem with internet purchasing. And they dont carry it in the store and actually promote buying from their website. Now you will be stuck with it.

I wonder how many thousands of customers dont bother to return when they should.

Sounds like the same people that get VAC or game bans on Steam platform for cheating.

Good! How is hitting 3 THOUSAND dollars in Returns not an obvious reason? After shopping the brand for 10 years, most would have a feel for how their sizes run.

Familiar with it or not, most people would make an exchange instead of a return if thy got the wrong fit in something they actually wanted.

REI member for over 40 years- keep in mind REI is a ‘non-profit’. Returning items that ‘don’t fit’ doesn’t make sense for in-store items. She may choose to shop elsewhere that will take all her returns.

Some people really do abuse return policies.

I think the woman that returned the 30% is ok. Most was online bought and that’s how it goes if you buy online. You just do not really know.

REI sells memberships based on the return policy. They should refund anyone the deem to have abused the policy they sold

Truth is, REI management hates mirrors. The fault is theirs, not the Members

Simple solution, stop shopping at rei

Just stop shopping there then. Anything they sell you can get directly from the manufacturer Any shoes and cloths just buy directly and cheaper. Easy fix. I just bought some boots and it was cheaper to buy them from the manufacturer and have them shipped to my door then buying in store. Its the death of retail.

Yeah, I think returning 30% of your purchases over 10 years is a bit excessive. I believe REI is justified.

Just buy a new membership under a different email/phone number. Problem solved.
