Good info! As shown here, there is only one "hack" for REI: Join the Co-op. Everything else flows from that. Don't let those posts on FB bulls*** you. As for the tags, they're all the same beige color at the garage sales here, so the tag thing likely isn't universal for all locations. The area where you can make a killing at the garage sales is sleep pads. I've purchased about $400 worth of them over the past half dozen years for about $50. They're all REI brand. Look for ones that look to be in otherwise great shape where the tag says something generic like "loses air" or "slow leak." First, people don't seem to realize that pads stretch when you first use them. So when they wake and it's slightly flat, they freak. Second - and more importantly - if an otherwise excellent looking pad has a mystery leak, buy it for $8-$20, inflate it at home, dunk it in the tub, look for where the stream of tiny bubbles comes from, then fix it with a $5 repair kit you also bought at REI. I've never even had to patch them. I just smear the adhesive over the hole and all have held. I've been able to fix every pad I bought that way and have never had to fix them a second time. I'd avoid this tent if you want better ventilation in hot weather. I'm sure it's great, but the mesh doesn't start low enough for you to enjoy air flowing through the tent if laying down. I invested in the REI Flash Air 2, which offers more ventilation, but is a hybrid that is not freestanding. I also wouldn't get the day packs. Not because they're bad. I think REIs packs are fine. But day packs are only for a few layers, snacks, and odds/ends and aren't intended to carry much weight. You can get THAT pack for around $20 at Walmart if you're man enough to walk around with something that says Ozark Trail on it. I took a $270 Osprey Atmos 65 that I got from REI up to the high camp at Mount Whitney ... then took a $19, 28L Ozark Trail Atka from there to the summit and back. It's four years later and I still use the Atka. I'd kind of say the same for the under layers. There are so many cheap alternatives now that you really don't need any of that from REI unless you're looking for merino wool, and a LOT of people look for merino wool. Keep up the good work!

received a 20% coupon with my first purchase. Called directly and haggled the price another 10%. Saved 30% on XeroDry rain jacket & pants and Oboz Sawtooth insulated hikers (my feet get very cold easily due to past extreme frostbite exposure.). If a product (especially REI made), has a price of $100. bargain with them to save ten or fifteen dollars. Works well, if you go directly to a REI store.

You should clarify that the dividend is based on full priced purchases, not all purchases. If you are near the northern border and travel into Canada, MEC is similar to REI. www.mec.ca/en/

Remember when camping in areas you don’t live in… Respect the area you are in! Just because you buy a 1,000 dollar tent from REI doesn’t mean you can leave your trash. I spent all summer picking up campsites around my house, and after a few times Of doing it I started sleeping with my outside speakers blasting lil John all night.

I’ve been b/t the Rei stormhenge, the Rei 650 down jacket or hoodie and the north face premonition jacket. The premonition on north face’s renewed site is $140 ( no way i am paying $280 for that lol). The 650 down is very much a bargain on rei’s outlet or used gear plus an extra 25% coupon i have for it. But the reviews are saying that it leaks down really bad. You highly recommend it - do you find it leaks down bad? I have a chance to buy it at like the $27 mark after the coupon on the used gear part of their site so it’s a very small gamble for me for warm down coat. However there is a small pinhole in it. The stormhenge appealed to me most because of the outer shell on it. The reviews are mixed on it - most say the zipper is horrible. I wear carhartt and the zipper w/ those can be stiff - I’m wondering how bad the stormhenge could be. Used wise after coupon i could get it for $87. I bought the north face thermoball a month ago (used) and i think it’s an okay intermediate jacket mostly for temps of 40-50 degrees. I don’t own a shell for it but i wear my carhartt Sherpa underneath it. It’s been an okay coat but i think anything under 37 degrees is kinda a struggle to keep warm even with my heaviest Sherpa on underneath. I like it’s lightweight but i want a warmer coat that’s lightweight. I have my heavy carhartt’s that are very warm (one w/ thinsulate) but it’s bulky and i don’t always want bulk. Only thing i dislike bout down is if it gets wet you’re screwed b/c down can’t really take the rain. I’m not going to be in downpours but it does rain and snow where i live. What do you recommend? I would like to take advantage of rei’s sale.
@HikeOregon3 жыл бұрын
For rain and/or snow I would recommend a puffy coat and GoreTex shell layer combo. GoreTex jackets almost always have pit zips which would be important so you don’t sweat out if you’re skiing or snowshoeing uphill.

@@HikeOregon I found a rei 650 down without the hood on Facebook marketplace today for super steal of a deal for only $18 + $8 to ship. it’s in perfect like new condition. there’s nothing wrong with it so I’ll try this out and see if it’s good for our New York weather but I am still going to have to get a shell for it. Should I stick with REI for the shell or could I go w/ any brand for the shell? I honestly still want the north face premonition. I bought this one today because it was just so cheap and it’s a small gamble
