Yay, Prakshi! I learned how to ride a bike in my late 20's. I never had access to safe, bikeable outdoor spaces and someone to teach me until well into adulthood. I appreciate REI shedding stigma around adults learning these types of skills.

This is so encouraging. I'm 31 and I never had a bike growing up except for a toy tricycle, and am going to sign up for a beginners' cycling class in April. I held off on it too long out of fear of embarrassment and that I was "too old to learn", but it was something I always wanted to do and I figured it was now or never.

My partner never learned to ride but she wants to learn and I would love it if she could come with me on my tours. I am going to show her this video when she gets home from work. I can't believe people miss the obvious lesson in learning to ride a bike. Use the steering to keep your balance and use your balance to steer!!!! I sat with all my kids and taught them to steer into the direction they are leaning. I explained that this would put the bike back upright. After 5 minutes of practicing this and making it "instinct", they were riding on their own. Of course, how much steering depends on speed and that's something they figured out on their own. Then, to turn, they understood leaning was the first part, then steering into the lean. Again, how much leaning and steering depends and they figured it out.

The hardest part of learning for me is learning how to turn and finding someone who will take the time to teach you. In 68 years I have found no one willing to teach me for free or paid a reasonable tip.
@coreysuffield19 күн бұрын
just set up a bike they did the video, low seat, no pedals, feet on the ground and just spend lots of time getting a feel for what the bike wants to do. one method that is actually used by motorcycles is counter-steering where you push forward the side of the handle bar in the direction you want to turn. although at lower speeds counter balancing is necessary for sharper turns where when the bike leans in to the turn, you lean out.
