matt borriello It's because he's Adam Sandler. It's shitty that the academy can't look past it, but it is what it is. And unfortunately, since the box office was small, and he wasn't talked about as a great actor after this, it was back to ridiculously stupid "comedies". And that's all we'll ever get. I'd like to think there's at least a small part of him that cares more about the art than the fame/fortune.

Anytime I mention this movie as "Adam Sandler's best performance" they have no idea what I'm talking about. This was one of my favorite movies of 2007 and DEFINIELY my favorite Adam Sandler film. I grew up on his comedy...and NOW his comedies are mostly terrible...but THIS film truly shows Sandler's talent. On the set of Grown-Ups (a movie I thought sucked) which was filmed right near me at a water park...I even told Adam after one of his scenes "Mr. Sandler, Reign Over Me is one of my favorite movies" he turned around as if he was shocked someone recognized him for that and he smiled saying "Oh thanks man!" while nodding. He looked at me like "OH YEAH...I gave an incredible performance in that one." Honestly ONE reason I wanted to say that, was hoping he would consider taking on more serious roles like that. I mean his character made me shed some tears in the movie theater when he opens up to Don Cheadle's character. One of the most uplifting movies I've seen in a while. Just shows how ONE friend can remind you how important it is to carry on with your life and let go of some of your pain.

I agree. I'll be the first to admit that I can't stand Adam Sandler's "comedies". He is not at all funny. But in this movie, he did an outstanding job. He showed that if he chooses to, he could become a respected dramatic actor. This is the only movie of his that I can sit down and watch and appreciate.

This movie really has just the right dash of Sandler's comedic genius. After such a heart wrenching scene, Charlie debating talking to his wife's patents manages to get a smile out of me every time, only for Sandler to deliver possibly the most moving lines of his career and reel it back in before the lightheartedness becomes too much. Always one of my favorite scenes.

I know it's weird, but this is exactly how I feel about my dog. He was my best friend since I before I can remember. I haven't talked about him for more than 2 minutes probably since he died, and I don't know if other people think I've forgotten him or something. Well that couldn't be farther from the truth. I dream about him every few nights, and I literally do see my black lab when I look at any other dog.

I have PTSD from long-lasting bullying. I just stumbled on this movie. It's accurate in everything about the condition - how withdrawn Charlie is, the unkempt looks, hair, how he's ecaping to fiction/music/video games, lashing out over seemingly insignificant things, slowly pulling himself together as if he was re-learning how to live. And how hard it is to trust someone with his experience and issues, because really, most people can't really handle getting someone out of a state like this - most people around him can't really grasp what he needs, or are to a point understandably fed up with him, with the exception of the few who are genuinely humane and get other people's emotions. Some things are of course less showy in real life, but overall this is definitely the most spot-on movie about non-war experience PTSD I have seen and really touching too, really liked the calm, soothing vibe.

I actually saw this movie in the cinema, just knowing it was an Adam Sandler movie, thinking it was some sort of comedy, like he usually makes. (I had not seen the trailer before.) In the beginning of the movie you're a bit unsure what to think of it, but it gets under your skin. And in the end I cried so badly, because the grief... some of us know that feeling, some of us have that grief. I have it since my brother died when I was 16. I went straight from the cinema to my brothers grave and bawled my eyes out. My husband had to drive me because I wouldn't have been able to even see the road if it had been me driving that day. :(

I watched this Adam Sandler film - it had me welling-up with emotion. “Love Reign O’er Me” It’s not a comedy. He plays a dentist by the name of Charlie Finerman who no longer practices or is no longer capable of practicing due to what seems to be a possible nervous breakdown. He plays drums in a punk-rock band & binges on mindless comedy & drinks a lot. In the end of the story, it’s revealed that he has been suppressing an unspeakably painful tragedy: his wife, his daughters, & even his dog, were on a flight that left Boston on the morning of September 11th, 2001. His in-laws have been watching him slowly unravel & they attempt to use the NY probate system in order to have him evaluated, committed & hospitalized. The music also plays a vital role in this film, most especially the title song: “Love, Reign O'er Me” by The Who. Charlie Finerman uses music as a narcotic to shut out his feelings & memories, but this particular song provokes such intense emotion that rather than diminishing his anger, it enflames his yearning to be reunited with his family. Anyhow, I digress. In this KZbin clip, the protagonist explains how he keeps seeing his family everywhere he goes. The dialogue that Sandler delivers to his in-laws punched me in the gut because it reminds me of my ex & her kids. Every time I see a gray Renegade drive by, I look. Every time I see an abundance of brunette hair, I look. Every time I see kids playing in town, I look. & every time I hear a James Taylor song, I’ve got to hold my friggin’ heart. But here’s the difference: Brandy & the kids live a few towns away. Charlie Finerman’s family died - There’s probably some closure in that. There’s almost something enviable in that... Oh, man... what a movie.

One of the most honest and authentic films about grief. Sandler gets tons of shit about his comedies. The truth is (and I really want people to Really think about this) yes his comedies can get really silly and even dumb. BUT, in every one of his comedies there is heart. Lots of it. And that's what keeps a lot of the silly comedy grounded. At the root of each comedy there is emotionality over family and love. So before you hate on his comedies for being dumb, try looking past the silliness and try to see the heart of what the story is about. This film strikes to the core of humanity in how we deal with grief each in our own way. And in Charlie's case, how he never dealt with it or sought help for it and it ruined him psychologically. And Sandler tapped into that so beautifully and poignantly. This is one of his most underrated films and performances of his career. At least Punch Drunk Love has a cult following. But this one flew so far under the radar that it really is considered a hidden gem.

When I tell people about this movie, that hey have to watch it, how great of an actor Adam Sandler is when he gets to act for real, I get emotional and tear up. I mean this movie and Adam Sandler´s acting is out of this world.

This is one of those great indies that people just don't know about. I think that Sandler's performance in this one is just too freaking awesome. He needs to do more drama. What a great movie.

This movie made me cry... and is one of the few that i like from Sandler. it is very moving... sometimes things hurt so much, but we have to find a way to deal with them, even if dealing with them means.. leaving aside.. until is time... love it. thanks for the posting.

I actually went into watching this movie expecting it to be terrible and not being able to take sandler seriously. But I was way wrong, he was amazing in this film and the character he played fit him and his acting style like a glove. Just as good of dramatic acting as anything else you'll see out there.

I have DID but also chronic complex PTSD, such traumatic events such as early childhood sexual abuse/abuse and loss by your loved one on which this film is based remain in your head but especially in your body. I understand very well his enormous loss and loss of loved ones and not being able to continue with your life as before, there are memories everywhere that you cannot erase even if you wanted to. Such horrible traumas are deeply scarred in your body and emerge with every sound, smell, photo, look in someone's face that you cannot stop. Indeed, as he also says to his parents-in-law; "I get that your in pain, but you've got each other".

This movie made me realize there’s more to everyone we know. Even if it’s not blatant it is, you just have to know how to approach and confront those you care for. If I ever need to write down my favorite film this has to be in the rankings for it.
