Waxing is definitely good for the soul. I’m into all the latest products and won’t go back to the old sealants and wax routine for my protection. The new ceramic spray toppers win that battle hands down. Where wax comes in for me is nothing beats the richness or depth in its shine. None of the new products can match it yet. So maybe once a year or so, after a decon wash, I’ll put a coat on. The fun, experience and results are always worth it. Use whatever product with good carnauba you want. None are going to last long, but that’s not the point either. The ceramics are for protection. Carnauba is for you.

Actually I have both Scholl Vintage and Pinnacle Souveran in personal collection. I do not consider waxes as obsolete at all. This still is protection and hobbyist gem. Pinnacle has good looks and application is super nice. You can do wowo but also leave the thing for a night and removal still be a dream. Souveran is kind of a special thing as you accept super low durability - like up to 8 weeks only. It does the wet look thing right and can punch in high league. I compare this stuff to high tier zymol stuff, swiss, bilthambers. Souveran is the thing and I love having it at hand.

Interesting, thoughtful, comprehensive and passionate video John - 10/10! For me, the point here is that Pinnacle Souveran and similar waxes are for our special cars that are garaged, that are only really used during the dry summer months - so cars that are loved, looked after and cosseted. The synthetic sealants and ceramic coatings are really for daily drivers that are not garaged and need that level of protection and durability from sitting outside 24/7, as they are subject to environmental pollution, rain, sun, bird poo etc. etc....also, for people who can't be bothered with spending time waxing cars - incredibly some see this as a chore 🤷♂. I am not interested in durability here. I use Souveran on my classic which doesn't see any rain, unless I get caught out (it happened once). I put a coat of Souveran on perhaps 3 times during the summer months before I go to an event - the red paint then looks like it is dripping off the car, the gloss is incredible. I see Souveran as a feel-good show car wax! 👍

I still use liquid BMW Autowax: I bought six tins of it in 1989 and still have two left! Not quite the durability of Soft99 or BH waxes but gorgeous to use and a glorious shine, 35 years after it should have gone off 😧

Loved this vlog, turning back the clock is always heart warming. I can tell your very passionate and knowledgeable about your waxes. I'm in my seventies so have tried quite a few myself over the years but to be honest without knowing very much about any of them. Interesting to me at least is Autogym produced great waxes then and transitioned so well into the ceramic products of today. For me wax is dead though. The modern day products are so much easier to apply and give more protection for longer. Although the nostalgia of the back breaking effort to apply a quality wax is still very powerful. Thanks for this video ,very enjoyable to watch and yes nostalgic

Having enjoyed detailing for nearly 10 years now I have come to realise that all these different protective products actually have their place, including still carnuba wax. If you have a garage queen that you only get out on the odd sunny day and it is beauty of finish that is the most important to you, then I still think waxes give the best finish and colour depth of all (I find most of the others to be too reflective rather than enhance the colour). Cleaning the wifes car and can't really be bothered, but want some decent protection? I'll spray Sonax BSD on it - quick, cheap, durable and looks pretty good If I have the time to prep my car, and autumn/winter is coming up then I'll stick something like Tac Systems Moonlight on it - great protection and longer lasting, but takes more prep Then there are "top-up" type products like Tac System Shinee Wax which give a quick top-up when I don't really have time (a bit like BSD). Depends on what you want, the car it is going on and how much time you have. I've realised more and more that there is no "one answer" - they all excel in different ways and I use them all.

Great video as usual and i watched to the end 😊. My first high end wax was Zymol Titanium back in mid to late 90s. Lovely wax to use and a little granular until softened. I used to apply it on my Zircon Blue Toyota MR2 and it looked fantastic, but more than that it made me feel like i had really treated the car to something special. I have a few very nice to use waxes at the moment but none have given me that feeling. Tempted by Zymol Glasur next though.

Greetings from the US...Watching this video made me nostalgic, so I went to my garage and pulled my old (10yr+ ??) container of Souveran off the shelf just to enjoy that wonderful tropical smell. It seems like the quality of the bag and towel has definitely fallen over the years. My bag is more golden with quality stitching. My towel was a dark blue, edgeless Cobra wax removal towel. It seems like Pinnacle have left this product on the vine to wither. With modern ceramics, and spray-on, wipe-off products, I don't use pure wax much anymore, but when I do feel nostalgic to put something on by hand, Souveran is one of the best to scratch that itch. It won't last, doesn't fill much (the car I use it on doesn't need that), and it attracts dust, but it goes on like warm butter, buffs off easier than anything, leaves a warm, beautiful glow, and the smells is lovely (very tropical and fruity). It is definitely one of the best waxes to use just to savor the experience!

the Bilt Hamber wax cures harder, beads like crazy and will outlast the autoglym wax. DS can get some moisture sticking on the surface if your garage is humid. The BH DS is unbeatable really at the price point. Its the best performing wax at 16 quid. But Autoglym is a class act to, a bit more high end.

I had a car ceramic coated with Gyeon Mohs and regretted it as I couldn't play with my range of waxes so I sold it within 2 weeks.

Paste wax rules Jon. Ended up riding bike. Bluetooth. Just listened to you about 3 hours. Kept playing your next video. Learnt loads ( reminded more where I go wrong !!! ) You were regretably buffing a paste wax double speed mini polisher hating on it. Saying not designed for machine. Is there any advantage at all using machine. I don't see what it could be ??? And when I hand polish. I tend to go around in circles loads over and over. Does it just need a wipe on and not a rub across panel. I always wonder if the Carnuba needs rubbing in. Or literally a wipe with light pressure once per square inch. Cheers Jon
@ForensicDetailing2 ай бұрын
not really but nowadays with cordless machines on low speed it can be quicker and you get a nice thin even coat. but getting the wax on the pad can be a bit of a pain. The gyeon wax with its cool applicator does get around that problem though

Hey John, could listen to you talk about detailing products until the end of time. I love your easygoing and not too serious presentation style, and it's obvious you have a huge amount of knowledge and experience which makes you my most trustworthy source of detailing information. I'd be keen to see more of the benefits of waxes compared to newer paint protection ie sealants and coatings. I've been a detailing enthusiast for the last 2 years and I keep getting told about this 'glow' especially on metallic paints that only a wax can provide. Im yet to see good KZbin footage of this in comparison to other protection. Maybe you could get your hands on a few premium waxes and do a 50-50 on a panel between a wax and a coating to show off that 'glow effect' to everyone. PS if you're looking for a premium boxing experience to go along with a modern premium wax, you should try and get your hands on Bowden's own beaut beads from Australia. Cheers!

I wonder if the Autoglym has some extra filling ingredient such as kaolin since its more of your typical Halfords consumer wax that will be used by people who wont be polishing before applying? The filling aspect was very impressive but anybody that used the Pinnacle Souvran back in the day knows that its one of the best looking waxes. Those oils just add immense jetting on dark solid colours but the durability is about one month in the real world. Another nice looking wax was P21S Concours, another very oily wax with great looks but poor durability. I think the best all rounder ive ever used though was Swissvax Best Of Show. It leaves a great glow to the paint whilst having not bad durability for a show wax. Some other notable mentions are Chemical Guys Petes 53, Victoria Concours and Lusso Oro. I spent many hours doing Cleakote Red Moose Glaze followed by a wax on my red Toyota MR2 back in the mid 00's. More recently ive dipped my toes back into waxes and 3D Poxy is a real nice looking machine applied liquid wax
@ForensicDetailing7 ай бұрын
I doubt they would use kaolin. Thats more a meguiars thing. Im not sure what autoglym are doing but its got a good solvent system in it, it will cure out properly and fully but it beads like crazy. P21S looks very much like the pinnacle does it, mega oily insane shine but no durability. Swisswax BOS is nice isnt it. I think its changed names recently. I will get some and review it for the channe but ive used it before. Petes 53 is great. I think Ive used one victoria wax once but cant remember. angelwax enigma is one that I love.
