ReinardSynth#9 Korg DW8000 PSU and switches Repair

A Korg DW8000 which needs some love and a good clean... and its PSU repaired.
Incidental music: Me an my Yamaha Montage 7, having among others fun with an funky shuffle in E-minor
Tools used:
- Steinberg UR22mkII + Audio technica 2020 for voiceover
- Olympus E-M10 as video camera (ZV-1 coming!!)
- Manfrotto Magic Arm
- Editing: iMovie (Easy bits) + Davinci Resolve (difficult bits)

Nice work. Textbook re-furb. I normally replace the diode bridge, too. And sometimes remove the sliders, dis-assemble, clean, and re-install. I've had that type of holder come apart on me.

My favorite and critical part of the video. Where the power plug in is, leave the 2 screws on the bottom on, and just unscrew it from the top. That way you don't break them off whille opening it.

Cool! I think the video would be more interesting if you leave it as normal instead of fast forward. Can u post only the process in normal mode? It will give us a better guide because they video is well structured but fast 🙈

I have rebuilt mine too and love it. How do you re calibrate the after touch out of interest. I find you have to press pretty hard to get it to work. It's fine when on the receiving end of another controller but curious as to how to do this.

Definitely hard to push. One thing piano repairers do is use steam to soften felts back to shape. i think it would help with the pressure. I might try adjusting those 2 pots by ear while it's on.

Nice video. I have one waiting to be repaired. Did you troubleshoot the PSU or just automatically replace the regulators?

Troubleshoot… output voltages were off or gone; measured caps: some were off; one regulator was broken; so to be sure replaced all caps and all four regulators

@@reinardvanloo507 Thanks. I also have an EX-8000 waiting to be fixed (same client). Since that's easier to get into, I just checked the PSU voltages and one of the +5v rails is dead and the +11v is outputting +15v. I'll probably just replace all the regulators at this point. They are cheap.

Hello, I have a Korg Dw8000 that is making strange noises, maybe memory corruption. I also have a Yamaha dx7 that needs a new battery and reload. Do you know anyone in the new york area that repairs such key boards?

That DW8000 needs a good look by a good tech; the battery replacement and reload can be done by a … lesser tech.. it‘s rather simple. Sadly I do not know of anyone who can do such a repair in New York (a bit difficult from Vienna/Austria…)

My aftertouch requires the pressure of a gorilla to do anything even at the highest parameter setting. Does this mean the aftertouch sensors are unusable?

afraid so... I have not seen replacement strips, but heard about a convoluted rejuvenating method for aftertouch strips with not guarantee of success... have not tried it yet...

Where can the regulators be found? What are their designations?

3x 7805 (5V, 1 Amp regulator) and 1x 7905 (-5V regulator, 1 Amp) cam be fiund on ebay for cheap, or Conrad, Mouser.com, digikey.com, etc.
