This really amaze me. Here in my country, Italy, there's a similar situations with dilects and/or regional forms. It's always interesting to see how much your way of talking can change from even one city to the next one. Plus, there are different mini-dialects even in the same city. I wonder if that's the same with Japanese c:

I asked a Japanese linguist once and she said the differences were relatively minor and mainly found in particles (like the desshou / dara things mentioned at the start of this video) and individual words (like chin chin and the other words mentioned here). So the speech sounds and many words should be the same everywhere, I think. In other words: not as many differences as in Italy, where linguists nowadays see the dialects as different regional languages!

I find it mesmerizing how they switch between English and Japanese almost within the same sentence. I speak French along with my native English but I wouldn't be able to switch so quickly mentally.

its almost like both are the native language equaly, which is not easy to do, i speak german and fluid english, but when i try to switch between the 2 its like my brain need a split-second to catch up, like flipping a switch or something... and Japanese is alot more complex even than english. lol. like the difference between a hill and freaking Mount Everest or something >_< definitly impressing

Did either of you grow up learning both languages with someone or had a person you were able to speak both languages to? My older sister and I both began learning English when we were little so it came natural to mix both as we spoke with each other. We became accustomed to speaking English due to school but while at home we had to switch instantly at a moment's notice while speaking with or around my mom so she could understand too. Common to have moments we're speaking in one language and find it more natural to say a particular word or phrase in the other language so the switch becomes easy when we know we'll be understood.

@@mica4977 it was kinda the same for me. I have a friend with whom i speak three languages, sometimes in the same sentence. Starting a sentence in another language and finishing in the second seems totally natural, i don't have to think about it. I think it's also because i learned to think(as in inner thought process) in these languages. At first i would think in my regional language then translate it to Hindi or English but then i started thinking in these languages and after that i don't have to stop and think.

Regional accents are fun no matter which nation. I speak a regional accent in my nation as well, it used to be it's own language 400 years ago but intermingling with the rest of the nation turned it into an accent. The word for wall in my nation is mur but in my regional accent it's gärde which is related to the English word Guard, and French Garde. Which means to defend, regional accents are fun. However seeing as my accent is actually more closely related to all the other European languages than the standard language, it's real interesting, the English word Mill has a cognate with my accent möll, but it's not related to the standard language kvarn. It's so interesting that me speaking the oldest remaining accent in all of Europe which is roughly 1600 years old, it's originally the primogenitor for all Germanic languages so it's not that weird. And so far as I know my family lineage can be traced back to the original settlers of this region 11 thousand years B.C. Which is older than the first known Civilization, the Black Sea civilization. And the weird thing is that they've found forged steel items close to where I live, that are over 10000 years old. But most regional accents aren't as cute as the Japanese accents..

I lived in Hirosaki, Aomori for six months and there they speak Tsugaru-ben. There was this really sweet Oji-san who loved chatting with us whenever he saw us walking by, except I couldnt understand him!! His accent was so thick that it threw all my studies out the window hahaha! Some of my roommates spoke next to no Japanese so they counted on me to translate for him, except it was like using Japanese to decode a secret language. It was bizarre since this Oji-san understood me completely, except I couldnt understand him for the life of me! I loved talking with him, though. Tsugaru-Ben also helped whenever I would mess up saying 明けましておめでとう(Akemashite-omedetou, happy new year), I would accidentally say あげましておめでとう! (AGEmashite-omedetou, aka: a deep-fried new year lol). Someone would correct me, and then a local would say "no, she's speaking native Tsugaru-ben!!" It was great hahaha

in germany there are many dialects that sound very different and have lots of weird sounding words that people in other regions have never heard of. But the dialects aren't really spoken by that many people, especially in cities (except for bavaria, most of them speak bavarian)

I think those regional names for things are common everywhere aren't they? I mean, "Daddy-long-legs" could mean a harvest spider, or a crane fly depending on where you are. I grew up knowing woodlice as chiggipigs, which doesn't originate from where I grew up, but a courtesy aunt. Where I currently live, there is no such thing as a sandwich, they are all cobs, but where my wifes' family live, there are only barm cakes, (same thing) and where I grew up, they would usually be butties. In Scotland, nobody is ever daft, they are only ever a bampot. People may be "nesh" on winter days, or "clemmin" if they haven't eaten for some time. (cold, or hungry) There is no taffy in the UK, there are only chews, and the usual trunk/boot, pavement/side-walk, hood/bonnet, silencer/muffler type arguments apply to this too. We also have no cilantro only coriander, no zucchini, only courgettes, and no egg-plants, only aubergines. ;) I'm sure Joey knows his bonzas from his drongos too. There is no rhyme or reason to it. It's just how language develops, and spreads through communities, taking little or no notice of political boundaries, but usually having more to do with circles of trade and industry.

Japanese seems like the hardest language to learn in all its forms, like speaking, understanding, reading and writing. It almost seems like you have to either grow up there or have a member of your family speaking it in your household to be able to get a grasp on it
