At the age of 24 I bought a X1/9 in 1995 (1985 model) and as the rusty holes were getting bigger, after 5 years of fun I had to take a decision: Drive it till it's dead or restore it. So I started to disassemble. Now I'm 51. With many interruptions it took 21 years and a lot of work and money to rebuild it. But I can tell you, it was worth every minute! Do it! Hi Stefan, your story is similar to my x1/9 project - I still have my 85 car that I ran when I was 19. Thankfully I’ve had it garaged otherwise it would have dissolved by now - starting my restoration to bring it back to enjoy it for my 50th birthday present to myself. Fingers crossed

First off, Welcome to the wonderful world of X ownership. You will find it to be exciting, exhilarating and exasperating! I'm curious if you knew of these cars before you found this one, and if you've ever driven an X-1/9 before? Because if you haven't... you are in for a wonderful surprise. These little cars are magical to drive. Unlike anything else on the road. Make sure you reach out to the folks at the X-Web forum. Between Mark W and Steve C in OZ, and the folks at X-web you have a wealth of knowledge to assist you. Good luck with the resto. We're all anxious to see what you do with what is becoming a more rare car, as each day passes.

Great choice for a project! Take a look at the build specs for a 150bhp n/a 1500 sohc and close-ratio 5-speed with lsd, plus various other mods @ RMS Motoring Forum / members cars / the ultimate X.

Cool! I’m restoring a 1980 X1/9 as well! I have a rebuilt Uno turbo engine for it. I started the project in 2015, so yeah, your project is going to take a couple of years if you have a regular job and a family :) Can’t wait to see your progress. Whereabouts are you in Sweden?

That’s very interesting! I’ve been looking at the Uno turbo option, does that fit right in without modifications to gearbox, drive shafts etc? I’m based just outsido of Malmö, you?

It’s a shame Uno Turbo engines have become as rare as hen’s teeth, but they’re a great upgrade for the slightly dull 1500 engine. The UT engine is virtually the same engine as the pre-1980 1300cc X1/9 engine. The only real difference is the location of the shifter in the gearbox. You have to use an X1/9 gearbox and then transfer the internals of the UT gearbox to it. The rest of the engine is identical. You do have to take some extra measures to cool the engine/turbo though, because the UT has a front-mounted intercooler and obviously, that’s not really a simple option with the X1/9. I’m going to use an air-to-water intercooler, with an extra radiotor mounted behind the regular one. An alternative to the 1301cc mk1 UT engine would be the mk2 engine (1372cc, more torque, a bit more modern), but those are hard to find as well. I live in Amsterdam btw, but know Sweden quite well (and speak Swedish reasonably well).
