Thank you Dr Chatterjee. I have recently retired after 47 years as a nurse. I have faced death in my vocation and in my personal life many times. As a child I would go with my mother to care for end of life neighbours in the UK. This is what my mother did with her mother. Caring for the families of these people. I eventually settled in community nursing. Loved it. Very difficult but fulfilling and real. In my personal life many deaths including my sisters and more recently my son. Got good advice from my doctor, not medication. I left work before my state pension. I don’t fear death, I fear the way of dying, but I try to alleviate risks with my lifestyle. I know my regrets, I know when I should have done things differently. I know I feared attempting so many things. Remember there is no going back. I’m 65, I feel I still have time to do something to make a change. I have achieved more since my sons death, I didn’t lock myself away. It’s the hardest things I’ve ever done. I had a psychological mask to make me appear happy, but bit by bit my ‘self’ appeared. Have to start with one step, and keep doing it. Best wishes.

Hmmm, after reading your message I had to wonder what your death bed reflections would be? For myself I plan to reflect on that question and put in motion what I really want for myself while here. I wonder would you enjoy new friendships, community or volunteering opportunities? Of course, I don’t know you but this may qualify as talking to a stranger. 😊Be well, explore life, you are worth it!

I am a 16 year old and I've come to a realisation. Over the past 2 years, I've been digging up with these exact thoughts, death, life, and career. And what is my goal? And what is my purpose? we can't blame this generation or this generation kids but being born in this generation. Sometimes, my brain freezes as well. I get brain paralysis. Sometimes I can't move from my phone, I get distracted. I don't pay attention. I procrastinate. I overthink. I get anxieties. I get panic attacks I. Am healing I am learning, and I am trying to be the best version of myself. I am trying to be kind. I am trying to control my anger, and these things are really hard each and every year. No one is born with a perfect life. But I wanna be the person who heals my inner child, and this video is really relatable to me. as a 16 year old I have so much to go, and I can die any moment I can die the moment i achieve my goals. I can die anytime, death is unknown, but every time when I wake up, I am grateful that I am alive and I know I will be dead someday and my social media, my every belongings will not matter anymore because I won't be here and these thoughts were always running in my head, and I've been journaling about this. And I really needed someone who speaks about these things. So I can finally relate and feel a bit relaxed. Thank you so much for this video. And I hope you have a very great day.

Sending love from a 59 year old. My advice: go roller skating. It’s really fun. And do some volunteer work with elderly people. They will be so grateful and you will realize how valuable your life is. I know it’s not easy. I remember being 16. Please, give yourself the chance to enjoy and contribute and you will find your way. I believe in you. ❤

Dr Rangan, I have no fear of death whatsoever. I'm 45, and since I was a teenager, I've been saying to people that ' we die every single night for 8 hours when we sleep. Wed have no idea who we are or where we are . We are dead until we wake up'. With regard to HOW we age, I was having a conversation at the gym the other day in the changing rooms with a 60 year old, and I was telling him how over 40 I quit smoking and drinking and cut out processed foods, and he told me ' well, I'm not going to quit smoking and drinking, just because it might add an extra 5 years to my life' and I said ' I don't care about adding years to my life, I quit those bad habits cos i FEEL: better mentally and physically'.

From one physician to another... BRAVO 👏 I provide similar recommendations to some patients and their parents/caregivers and the response can be "Seriously? We can't do that. We didn't come here for this."... but, when a provider GENTLY LEANS IN, as you're literally doing here, and walks the walk themselves, shares their own journey with these issues, and is emotionally invested in their patients and families... the same way that you're palpably caring about us... it changes everything. I am SO grateful for your courage to be a compassionate truth teller. Thank you. Wishing everyone a healthy, prosperous, and joyous 2024 🙏

As someone who constantly struggle with health anxiety, the thought of death doesn't really push me into action. It immobilizes me more. Unless we count the insane amount of trips I've made to the hospital for whatever concern I have in those moments, thinking of dying has never really brought me anywhere. 😅 Although I hope some people can see this as a viable solution for their procrastination. Good luck this 2024!!!!

Dr. Chatterjee, you've done more for me on this podcast than any of the doctors I met (except my OBGYNs and the nurses who delivered by 2 babies). The healthcare system in US is horrendous, all the medical system does is to make the most out of the patients and there's no care for the benefit of the patient. The hospital bed is the most expensive bed in the world. I would stay away at all cost. Prevention works better than care. I hope there's more doctors like yourself and Dr. Garbor Mate.

As a family, we used to eat together everyday over years, when we were economically poor and struggled for basic needs. My mom used to share a fruit among four of us, even when that was all we had that day. By God's grace, we are self sufficient now. We live separate lives, far from each other; but the bond we developed during younger years keeps us close. The monetary status of families however does impact different people differently. It presents unimaginable consequences, especially for those in middle income or below poverty levels. These are the vast majority of us. When everyday survival is a challenge, we lose sight over the larger purpose of life. Contents like these from Dr. Chatterjee are invaluable tools for those who seek them. Thank you

Dr Rangan I used to struggle with the concept of death myself, I asked God to help me to understand why I couldn't understand it. He answered me! The book of Genesis was where I found the answer. Man was not meant to die, Dr Rangan, we were meant to live with God eternally!! I was not supposed to understand death.

In our scripture it is told to remember death daily and work. It purify your thoughts. It always reminds you the impermanence of life, water drop on lotus leaf. It prevents you from misdeed, motivates to contribute in the world and to leave a solid impact on other's life. Nice to hear you to utter this philosophy of our scripture.

My Summary: -Daily Death meditation Incision you are on deathbed ask yourself what are the top 3 things i wish I achieved most of in my life? Reverse engineer it and for those action steps into your life to achieve it. -Quality of sleep -Less screens more fractals and nature -eliminate choice. Less choices/micro stress per day. Variety Is overrated Premade lists, meal plan each day different meal. Only keep the choices that really matter to you. -Seek out friction. Social friction creates growth. Use it as a teacher to learn something about yourself -vitamin S (socializing) Even superficial micro interactions with strangers -health snacks (mind, spirit, body) Make it easy & habit stack.

Thanks so much doctor for this podcast!!! What you said about screen time in particular really resonated with me. It's so sad to see parents, friends, and spouses ignoring the real human beings around them in favour of their screens... I'm old enough to remember a time before smartphones were invented, before the internet became mainstream, so I've seen this happen in our life time... It's genuinely sad and I think it's so important that we recognise this epidemic of screen addiction as a society and really do something about it. Than you Dr Chatterjee, I really enjoy your videos and have learnt so much from them :))

Awesome, Awesome video. I got a wake up call with my screen time. When I was behind on my assignment at work. So I decided to give myself 5 focused hours getting it done without making coffee or setting up my audiobook to listen to while reading. I was shock out of my wits how much work I got done in that 5 hours. Right then and there I decided whatever I am doing I need to give it focused attention until done excluding all distraction. I get it right but not all the time as I am still a work in progress. I am in love with the suggestion of eliminating my choices it is a big distraction for me, I find I'm easily overwhelmed with too many choices. So there goes another one of my weakness. I've found a 5 minutes guided breathwork on KZbin and believe everything I practice, it's amazing feeling afterwards.

I have tried to encourage people not to be on judgement day with regrets. However, its nice to have it reinforced by helping you take stock of what you do in life and find those areas that are not working at all well. And sometimes you just need someone else to articulate it. So far watched 34min and that has taken up 90 mins as we pause at a discussion point. Like you advised and take the time to make it happen like the 3 things to do in a week. and think, yes i am doing that well, need improvement here or deffinately needs attention. thanks for the pod cast

I suffered a life altering accident in my 30s and despite all the things it robbed me of, it gave a gift as well - a certain perspective on life and something deeply freeing that I could never quite put into words. Licence to live characterises it perfectly!

Thanks for sharing this Doctor. Very helpful. I'm a creative person who finds it increasingly difficult to be creative on a daily basis in such a distracting world. It feels like the creative part of my brain rarely has a chance to actually breath and speak to me. As you mentioned, it mainly only happens in the shower or during a walk! But that's not good enough if you want to live a creative life in my opinion. Clearly I need to embrace silence more and allow my mind to hear itself again

I loved that “before you switch off” 😅 after think about our death. No one wants to give time to this especially if you’re young and the older people seem afraid to do so. But is the one thing we all have for sure in our lives. And it should be accepted in a natural and peaceful way, not either fear. If we think about it, it will guide our actions while we’re still young(er) and make us better humans. Do the things you really want to do, avoid harming others, and have a better life. We spend almost twenty years of our life (more or less) learning and getting ready for life, yet no one teaches us about death.

Loved this video Rangan…well done. As you get older you learn that life is about discernment especially in this life of infinite choice but the choice for what is right for us is a personal choice. Do I choose to be better or not, get angry or not, learn from an experience and so it goes on…

It is the definition of a masterpiece!:) it's brilliant to better understand the science behind what I do quite intentionally but without rationalising it! I'll surely rewatch this one over and over again til it's ingrained within. Ty Dr.

I loved every point you made here. If I don't successfully adopt them all, I hope I can at least accomplish: 1) Ease off screens when I'm out, so I can pay attention to my surroundings and to 2) interact with strangers, even by simply 3) seeking friction -making them a hero, and MOST DEINITELY 4) create life that has fewer choices bout things that don't really matter

Honestly, this is one of the best videos I've seen. Thank you so much for these suggestions! Re: point #5, I have noticed in the past 6-12 months that when I go for a walk in the neighborhood and pass someone, it's ME who feels the need to reach out. Like, if we pass each other by without saying hello (they make that choice as well), I feel bad in my heart. So, now, instead of waiting for them to give me eye contact or mutually agree - non verbally - to reach out, I will initiate saying hi. It makes me feel better in my heart.

I lost two parents this year - within 6 months of each. One got up one morning with an infection - went into hospital and never came out. She had just done a weeks shop the day before, and was looking forward to a new chocolate flavoured cheese cake. The other got out of bed after a good night sleep, got out her ironing board, sat down, and died.....with her iron still switched on and the starch drying on her shirts. That was it. Over. Not even the opportunity to romanticise on how their lives could have been better lived. Although, it would have been to make the lives of those around them better - and maybe only then indirectly their own lives.

Thank you I loved this and happy to say I do all of these things and will continue to do so and have much gratitude that I do live this way. I start each day with a full body meditation which sets me up for the day, I take down time daily, I sleep more than 8 hours most night, never watch the news and still find out what is going on in the world, spend time in nature and am rarely on social media. When challenging things happen in life, which is part of life, I am able to navigate these things. Cheers to beautiful living 🙏

I think about that 20 year experiment quite often. I think back to all the things that I didn't have and lived just fine with. And I think if I did just find then why can't I do just fine now? Of course many of the things we have are wonderful conveniences and can be powerful tools. If used as such.

Immense Gratitude Dr Chaterjee, using your own words I found this extremely Powerful. I have already turned off notifications on my phone since listening and now when I pick my phone up to do a task, I actually do what I intended, instead of getting distracted by a message or email. I struggle a lot with the unwavering choice we have of everything and find it quite overwhelming but your advice was super. Thank you 🌸

Obviously you are deeply care for your patients and you are one of a few Doctors I know who think outside the box. Your work means a lot to me and my family and other people, I am sure around the world. In my opinion Technologies and AI have taken away our creativities and real connections with other people. We don't have to think much , smart TV, smart Iphone, smart Lap top, smart watch , the list can go on and on, they are removing our souls while we are still alive and walking I think. what the point of having the brain and emotion when they are numbed by all those screens.. Loved your work. Thank you so much, Doctor your work is inspirational indeed. Have learnt a lot so far.
