I was a huge fan of First Comics back then and of Jon Sable in particular. I was really into Mike Grell even before Long Bow Hunters and his subsequent run on Green Arrow. There actually were a number of gritty cimics like this in the 80s, but are now long forgotten

Twenty years ago i picked up the graphic novel of "Grim Jack" about the demon wars. Intrigued about the character i did some research and learned about "First Comics" and it's gallery of characters. I bought the reprinted comics of Grim Jack and have admired Joe Ostrander since then. Now, it seems, is the time for John Sable. Great vid.

I remember First Comics and Jon Sable, Freelance by Mike Grell. I had that independent comic book back in the early 1980s when I was a little kid. I loved that character. He was similar to James Bond, but also different at the same time. I remember Mike Grell had an interview once where he explained that he had wanted Jon Sable to be a character whose comic was less about a super-hero character and more about a pulp character, or, at the very least, a character who was heavily inspired by pulp fiction of the early 1930s instead of the usual hero comic that most people read about. So when you look at Jon Sable, the freelance professional bounty hunter-for-hire, you get the feeling of watching an old noir story like Peter Gunn, P.I. Yes, he wears a flamboyant ninja-like costume, but it's more for theatrics to instill fear in his arch-enemies and awe in his allies. Not necessarily because there is a whole costumed vigilante community in his dark, grim and gritty crime drama world. I like that. It separates Jon Sable from the typical stories of super-heroes fighting against super-villains because he is just a normal, ordinary human being who goes off on great adventures and fights crime, but isn't done in the same tone as say Batman or the Punisher, or even Rorschach. Instead, he is more like a merc and a private investigator who is secretly hired by various people in order to try to accomplish mercenary missions, and to try to complete soldier-of-fortune assignments using his various fighting skills, special abilities, weapons and other paraphernalia. If anything, he reminds me more of a much more contemporary, modernized version of Will Eisner's The Spirit that has been updated for the present. Jon Sable is not necessarily an anti-hero, or a vigilante because he actually does try to work within the law, sometimes helping the police, the military and the government depending on the situation. They tolerate him mainly because, as a bounty hunter, he works exclusively for the United States of America, and never enlists in the employ of another foreign power. He exploits this loyalty by being expensive, but extremely good at what he does. This is why his clients are few and often only need his services whenever it's a situation where they know that they can only succeed with Sable being involved. Jon is definitely one of Mike Grell's best creations ever, and if they ever make a reboot/re-imagining/remake/retelling of the old live action T.V. series, I hope that they respect the lore and make it much more accurate to the original '80s canon source material from First Comics.

I actually just ordered the first 43 issues of Jon Sable Freelance two days ago. I've known about the series for a while because Evangeline is one of my favorite comic book series and I saw Jon Sable Freelance in the advertisements (yes I am that guy who reads the publishers' self-advertisements in comic books that came out 15 years before he was born) and I knew it had to be good because it's Mike Grell but the amount of comic books I want is much greater than the amount of money I have so I didn't have much of a chance to get it until a couple days ago when I saw the series on ebay for surprisingly cheap.

In the 80's, The Punisher was my favorite comic book character. He was "mainstream" while being an violent anti-hero, which was new for the 80's. And that is what you are missing from the history of Frank Castle. Most collectors went for the big two, DC and Marvel. Alternatives comics, which lead to the first "comic book glut", were new, and you had to seek them out. Your comic book store had to order them if you wanted to read them. So when Marvel re-introduced The Punisher, he was promoted as a violent anti-hero for the masses. He was a new kind of "super hero". Yes, Jon Sable predated this verson. Remember, there was no internet, so hearing about Jon Sable depended on if you local comic store promoted him. The Punisher was a part of Marvel, which was available everywhere. I had heard about Jon Sable, saw the comic, but it looked "lame" to me (boring cover). No super villains. Nothing I could relate to as a teenager. The Punisher? Awesome costume, ultra violent, fought Spiderman, Daredevil, Captain America...I had every single appearance of him. He even has black and white magazine size comic. He was the most accessable ultra violent anti-hero, when anti-heros were not a thing. Your essay on him impressed me, and I now want to check out his comics. For a 15 year old kid, you can break down a comic book character (or series) on par with any veteran. What we called "alternative" comics at the time, are a treasure trove of experimentation. I can suggest a ton of 80's comics, but if you would like to check out something fun, "Reid Flemming, The World's Toughest Milkman" was a favorite of mine. Jim Belushi tried to get this made into a film. "78 cents or I p*iss on your flowers"
