Senor Tree Hey he is one of the best guy's I know, he just found it weird and irritating that the school with the higher acceptance rate that is 3 spots lower on US News' college rankings didn't accept him but the statistically tougher school to get into did. He does regret doing it but at the time he was a bit angry because as much as he liked Harvard he really wanted to study on the west coast, on a beautiful campus with sports teams that don't suck ass. (We live in Mass and know the Harvard Campus pretty well, so it isn't much of an experience)

I used to think Stanford only had super-humans going there until one night, many years ago, I was watching Nightline and the issue being "explored" was how the guest on the show had kept flunking the exam to become a superintendent for a high school system in California, even though he'd graduated from Stanford. Since then I try to keep in mind that we're all just human beings at the end of the day and that it's a mistake to go around brushing one person as not being much while others should be bowed down to on account of somehow being associated with something regarded by many as prestige. Stanford is wonderful, but there are in fact many wonderful universities loaded with folks that are talented and know a lot of things that can help the human condition. Glad the pretty and smart young lady in the vid has such a bright future in front of her, btw.:-)

Its harder to get into Stanford than Harvard, why is this such a big deal
@MrThatGuyWhoTrolls2110 жыл бұрын
Stanford's acceptance rate in 2012 6.6% Harvard's... 5.9% (google it) Well so much for that reasoning.
@theYO215410 жыл бұрын
show me the 2014 stats
@MrThatGuyWhoTrolls2110 жыл бұрын
theYO2154 Doesn't matter, this girl was accepted in 2012 so those are the only stats you need in her situation. Considering you were saying "why is this such a big deal" in her case it is, she got accepted into the more difficult school to get into at the time. But if you really must know, Harvard's remains at 5.9% and Stanford's is 5.1% which is there lowest EVER. So yes, as of 2014 Stanford is more difficult. But that being said, giving a single year isn't a justifiable statistic. You would need averages of every year post the 2400 score SAT change which I can't find but am willing to guarantee Harvard's is lower. From doing a little research, Harvard has claimed the top spot for lowest admissions rate through most of the 80s, 90s and 00s and Stanford has only beat them out an small number times (2 in the past two years though, 13' and 14') That also being said the method of admission is slightly different, Harvard is more willing to deny perfect academic students with crap backgrounds but Stanford is less willing to admit people of fantastic backgrounds, Extracurriculars, Essays etc. with 3.95 GPAs or a 790 on SAT Math or some SAT II because it wasn't a 4.0 or an 800. Harvard is much more holistic which in this day and age makes the acceptance rate go up while Stanford is more looking fore perfect specimens at this point. Quick side note though Stanford's Med and Law programs notoriously much lower acceptance rates than Harvard's which is much more impressive to me. Stanford Law is about 10% to Harvard's 16% and their med is 3% to Harvard's 4%.
@MrBlueBee44410 жыл бұрын
For her case, you can't just evaluate the overall acceptance rates for each school. She must have applied early decision for Stanford 2012 and regular decision for Harvard 2012. Very different percentages, interpret how you will. Different college admission officers will simply see different qualities in different people, so their decisions will not necessarily follow a perfect trend or mathematical relationship. Regardless, congrats to her and all those pursuing their dream or non-dream schools.
@frackle10 жыл бұрын
Nobody a school's acceptance rate has more to do with how many and what type of people apply than how difficult it is to be the type of person accepted at that school. Many schools send recruiters across the country to encourage people to apply that they know are certain rejects just to lower their reported acceptance rate, and many elite schools (such as Harvard or Stanford) will attract hail-mary applications that slightly lower-ranked schools do not. You're welcome for all these words about acceptance rates that you didn't ask for.

If you ask anyone that goes to Stanford or another exceptional university (I have talked to them), they will not give you answer on what specific classes or activities to do. If there was one answer, then everyone would be doing that one class, activity, or sport. Admission officers are smart, especially at a school like Stanford. They know if you are genuinely passionate about something or just doing it for the sake of getting into college. If you are looking for help on how to stand out though, I would recommend exceeding in a unique sport or activity. For me, personally, the factor that got me into one of the best schools was playing and exceeding in a sport. that sport is Sailing. Although many people consider it not to be a sport, it most certainly is and I know for one, that Stanford is big on sailing. Of course that is not why I started to sail. In fact, I started when I was 9. I started winning races as a young kid and won many awards. I competed at Nationals and so on. Stuff like that is what these schools look at. Something to tell you apart from everyone else, because there are around 40,000 people applying, but how many of those are competitive sailors? Chances are not many. I cannot tell you how many of my sailing coaches have gone to Stanford. Rowing/Crew is another example. Of course many people don't have access to water or sailing, because I am not going to lie, it is a pricey sport. My family is in no way not rich. At all. But I have to say we spend a lot of our money on sailing for my brother and I. This is because it is our passion. Because it is an expensive sport, I worked by butt off to win scholarships at one of the best high schools in Cali. Something like that is also brownie points to college. Only ten people applying to this high school won the merit scholarship and I was thankful to be one of them. On another note, a 4.0 GPA and a 2200+ score on the SAT is a typical Stanford student. However, there are people that don't get in, even with those grades. All in all, I think the most important part a student should withhold is a 'thing' to make you stand out from the rest. So there is no clear path to get into Stanford. You have to make your own way through and do your own activities that you take interest in. Even if someone tells you what classes to take, you shouldn't listen to them, but rather do what you want to do. This is probably the biggest misconception students make. Ask anyone who made into the big league schools and they will tell you they did what they wanted to do. They are all different. No one told them what classes to take or what sports to do. They studied hard, got good grades, put effort into what they did. These students are leaders, innovators, thinkers, inventors, not 'manufactured students.' Explore activities, start clubs, try a new sport, and hey, you might just find something you love. And that something is what is going to get you into Stanford. Ok wow that was long. Then again, I'm only am going into Freshman year of high school, so idk I have just done a lot of research ok lol you don't have to listen to me. Here are some of the sources I used: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYa8mYevodZ2b9E collegeapps.about.com/od/GPA-SAT-ACT-Graphs/ss/stanford-admission-gpa-sat-act.htm

Kid you're 13, once you go through high school you'll realize that this type of thinking is the *ideal* way to get into a school like Stanford, but in the end all you mentioned is way easier said then done. Readers should take this advice with advice grain of salt, unless you happen to actually get accepted in 4 years. Good luck

I'm an upcoming senior and I can tell you this: this is pretty good advice. All you other comments above me... Stop bring so pessimistic.

A true independent scholar thinks for them self of what will happen in the long run. People shouldn't want to go to college because it is expected to do so. College is one of many ways to explore a certain passion or to look for it if you haven't yet, but don't try to get into a good school for the hell of it... Where you go to college does not determine whether you'll get your dream job or not a d in the long run isn't that what all this effort is supposed to be about

YesReneau Congratulations. I have no idea how I stumbled upon this video. I love the positivity you bring to the situation... It is a true sign of your character. I remember in 2000-2001 when I applied to schools, the anxiety of it all can be tough. I was discouraged when I got rejected by U Pitt, as I wanted to go to school with my best friend. Only, later, I got accepted into Maryland. Weird. Nevertheless, I went for a semester, then joined the Army. Knocked out some college in the Army, and finally got my degree in 2011 from UNLV. I am working on my masters now... I love underdog stories as well. I was 1 of 5 boys, and the only one on my fathers side, to attend/graduate with a Bachelors. I'll be the first in my family to have a Graduate Degree! This isn't about me though, it's about you. Congratulations! I wish you the best in your endeavors, and please remain such a positive person... the world needs more of that!

Well, my father got rejected at Berkeley, but he got accepted to Stanford. In general, Harvard is a lot harder to get accepted compared to Stanford or Berkeley. Of course, there are always exceptions. I know many EE friends who got accepted to Stanford, but also got rejected at Berkeley. I also know one Korean-American girl who rejected at UCI, but she got accepted to Berkeley in the math department.

+Katsumi Watanabe 14 isn't that young, lol.... do several extra activities.. maintain high grade averages, and depending on what you want to be when you grow up, focus on something that helps you achieve that (e.g, if you want to be a lawyer, join and become the captain of a debate club, want to be a basketball player, join the basketball team, etc)
