Singing without music makes all the difference in interpretation, counting and diction. This is absolutely brilliant!

This is so impressive on all counts, including singing from memory. Congratulations and thanks go to all involved: the soloists, choir members, the choir director, the organist, the video, and the sound technicians. Neil LRAM ARCM

Studied this for 'O' level in 1968. Still have my marked up score. Never a massive fan of Britten but I still enjoy this. Very nice choir & performance. Thanks for posting.

I sang this long ago in McNeil Robinson's choir, He was the splendid organist at St John the Divine and another church in NYC. Miss you forever, Neil.

It thrilled my heart to see these young singers tackle such an advanced choral work. I was most impressed with the attention paid to the incredibly gifted conductor. The diction was impeccable. These students also seem to be very emotionally engaged in the song, and that sends the performance quality just soaring through the roof. Thank you for sharing.

What an amazing choir! Fabulous singing, great interpretation, dynamics, overall sound and diction - as well as your focussed interaction with your conductor. A star for personal presentation too - it really adds a professional touch to see a choir 'looking' like a cohesive group!

Wow! Superb diction, great intonation - and NO BOOKS! The choir I'm in is currently rehearsing this - I hope we're somewhere near as good as this.

Beautifully done, clear, excellent diction and timing. Better than most other versions I've listened to, you can really understand the words, so important in this piece.

És impressionant! Bravo! Sou un cor fantàstic: Ordenat, afinat amb una acurada dicció. Els solos son meravellosos, cantats per aquests nois i noies, sense afectacions postisses. I, si us fixeu, veureu un lleu somriure a les cares d'els joves cantaires.

I found your A++ performance when searching for a version of this work where you can understand the words. It's as good as it gets, and made me realize - the problem isn't in the performances, it's in the composition. Unlike a Mass, where the words are known be everyone and are just a vehicle for the music, in this piece the music serves a a vehicle for the words. But given the complexity of both, the choral venue (essential for the music) isn't capable of rendering the articulation necessary for their easy comprehension. It's analogous to trying to parse Gilbert and Sullivan's "I Am the Perfect Model of a Modern Major General" if that were to be performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. We can't fault Britten for taking on an impossible task - that he chose to promote Smart's incredibly smart poetry speaks to his impeccable taste. This work, which by its very nature is doomed to be less than perfect, is still a most wonderful piece. A possible solution: Digital Sound Processing. Problem: that would detract from the overall musical sound. My best solution: subtitles. I'll be uploading my subtitled version of this performance to my "channel". I'll be happy if it gets taken down and put up on this channel as an alternate version, but it might be easier for the Gondwana Singers to just link to it.
